This is piece is one of our Salukis, HODA. I started today, 3 hrs worth and am refining it more tomorrow. I use a hunt diamond point with a bowl point for lots of white. I also try to work in one direction with the scratches. size is approx. 5x7. This is on EssDee board. I usually coat with Pelican ink no.17
We scanned in grayscale at 200 dpi

It's an unusual style, working in one direction Tom, but in your hands it works tremendously well!!

Looking really good so far. Can you please post a pic of these tools as I do not know what they are?

they are tips that go into speedball pen holders( calligraphy ) diamond looks like a arrow point and bowl like a little spoon(but sharp) diamond point for fine lines and bowl for white areas large areas of white

Neat, boy are you going to love Ampersand. You've definitely got that far away, but looking down my nose at you expression. Can't wait to see more.

Nice work Tom, love the Saluki soft expression. I never thought about using those tools, will have to dig out my old caligraphy stuff and have a go.

Great style Tom. Love the one direction. So different. Those speedball nibs I would not be without, especially the rounded point one. I use it on just about every scratchboard to bring out the whitest highlights possible.

I must agree with everyone here about your style. I really like the expression you've captured.
I love those tools That's what I used exclusively for decades. I still use them a lot. I use the broad nib for hair.

I like your style with the strong play of negative against positive in the left ear... This will be lovely, I can sense it...

sometimes when I use pre-inked board the ink is too thick and my points won't make a crisp line, so I coat the white boards myself. after using several inks I settled on pelican no.17 I can remember the types of artboard too. Artone, scriffito, EssDee(from England) and now clayboard on masonite. I used scriffito to teach my students at school(because of cost) and EssDee board for more advanced students. in colored scratchboard, I use Dr. Martins Radient watercolors since its worked well for me. I have never used a spray on my images when its done . Hows that work and is Krylon fixitif good or what?

Looks nice Tom... not sure I understand what you mean by "one direction"...from my phone it looks like your following "one direction"....the hair direction.. ha!

I enjoy the spoon shaped tool to... but I put a lil bend in it so it tracks better.... im not sure I can explain this but, it seems to me this tool didn't want to track right and I think the reason is... if you drew a line right down the center of the tool holder...the contact point would be ...in front of this line..making it unstable and it seems to crawl or veer and not easy to control/guide. Bending the tool back...so its slightly behind the mentioned center line...it naturally follows, for me, much better. Keeping in mind the heavy handed style I use this tool for.

direction of the fur, you're right. I was taught that if you went crossways across the scratches that they sometimes pop off chips of surface.

That is a huge reason that most here use Ampersand boards, you can really work it and not have to worry about it chipping.

I'll try to get in to Albq. sometime this weekend to shop for some at Langels art store. Not as many art stores here as in southern cal like I used to have.

Blicks is usually cheaper than art supply stores. In fact Blicks is having a 49% off sale right now.

I usually get my stuff in a week or so.
