This is one of those pictures that I have done in every medium including scratch...and I've never been satisfied with any of them, but it was a long time ago. This is another of my granddaughters...she will be 11 in about 2 weeks and was maybe 14 or 15 months at the time I took the photo. I'm hoping I can do it justice this time. Diana might remember this one...I think I posted it way back but we didn't have this forum then.

8X10 this isn't the full board and it's still looking rough.

Fabulous so far, Lorna. I love seeing how everyone tackles the progression of a piece. Some start with eyes . . . others start with the hats.

I can see this is gonna be another stunner Lorna!
Talking of re-does I have a couple of pieces which I gave away and as usual regret letting em go - so will be attempting them again in the near future but on bigger boards.
I'm pulling up a chair for this one.....

Update...Thanks so much everyone, I appreciate you taking the time to look!

I got some more done the other day and then took it to work today and got a couple of hours on it...doesn't look it much was done...lots of layers:D Didn't work on the face...after the bit under her neck I switched to the collar and really wished I had left it plain like in the photo, instead of getting fancy. Just a closeup this time...I'm trying to build mystery like Diana always does.:wink2: :D No area is finished yet.

PatrickHedges

Lorna, when feathering do you do what I do? I tend to scratch most of it to the same level and then the shadow is added back in with diluted ink (and then adjusted to suit), whereas with my squiggles, I tend to have the shadow because there are less squiggles in that area and more in the lit areas.

She is more than delightful!!

Thank you everyone!

Patrick...a little bit of both. The dark shadow part, I did several layers with washes of ink between each one, to keep it on the dark side. The brightest sunlit part, I also did several layers of scratching but kept the washes to a minimum.
Sandra...yes, sometimes it is hard to put it aside. I just have some stuff I have to get ready for a show and for the artisan center. I work again on Wed. so I'll be able to work on this if it's not busy.:)

Thanks again!

Oh, Lorna... She's precious. I love the expression and that tongue. It speaks to all parents of little girls. The skin and the lighting is glorious. If I didn't know it was SB I would have thought it beautifully blended charcoal. You are most definitely a master (or is it mistress) of scratchboard.

OK OK I resemble that remark! I mean resent!

I can't even come up with words that suit this piece as I'm not all that "wordy" I guess... but I can tell you how it made me feel. I was taken back to my own childhood when the acquisition of a sucker was cause for celebration and Joy as I had earned it by being a good girl. A difficult task for me I hear!
You have such a knack for portraits Lorna, and you turn the simple observation of your art into a journey of emotion and rememberings for your audience! Thank you for the snippet of purity of a simpler time

Grrr, there's more I wanted to say, but I was still getting an error message - something wonky with the formatting.
It's more than just technical skill, Lorna, it's the little things -like your decision to go with the quilted collar and the wrinkles in the fabric on her left shoulder and the way her hair is brighter where it curls out into the sunlight.
