Haven't been around here for a while - lost my mojo (as Lorna would say). Trying to get it back with this portrait of my niece - photo with the kind permission of Martin Boyce. Sorry about the blurry scan - its 9x12 will try to take a photo I think.

I see I have quite a lot of catching up to do with all these new members to this forum. Some really fantastic work right now!!!

Oooooo, moody start! Lorna, between the two of us we could get Rod off the couch and then we could sit comfortably. I'll bring popcorn!

03-04-2011, 05:55 PM
Thanks guys for the 'warm welcome' back:wave: just the encouragement I need:grouphug: Will update soon.

03-04-2011, 06:07 PM
Very nice start, Jenny. I like the lighting in this one already.

Looks like the rest of us will have to sit on the floor for this one now that the couch and chairs are all taken. :)

03-04-2011, 10:49 PM
Jenny, so far this piece has a very old vintage look about it, so soft and endearing. Can't wait to see more. Gail

03-04-2011, 10:55 PM
This is lovely! Sure has a lot of atmosphere! Makes one want to reflect on stuff......hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yaaaaa.......................................................................

03-05-2011, 01:15 AM
This going to be some kind of wonderful, keep up the good work.

03-05-2011, 06:05 AM
Hey Jenny, I have a bottle of 56 Grange. I reckon that sure beats Rodmans beer and Dianas popcorn. So I guess I would have to have the front row. Right guys. Mmmm. No arguments here. I'll just push the recliner back and watch this lovely moody piece evolve.

03-05-2011, 10:57 AM
Beautiful!! Really love the lighting, looking forward to seeing how this turns out.:D

03-06-2011, 01:14 AM
The closeups look great Jenny...looks like you're using Patricks squiggley technique...sorta.:D

you two rascals DO need to meet.... now give me some of that popcorn and one of you girls get me a beer

I agree...we DO need to meet! As for the rest of that sentence...how very male chauvinist of you! You didn't even say please!

Intermission over ..........................

Thank you Rod, Lorna, Diana, Brett, Patrick, Harry, Diane, Gail, Pamela, Wendy, Lesley and Page - hope I haven't forgotten anyone:crossfingers: Your input is just what I need to spur me on:thumbsup:

Lorna the technique is just an experiment with tiny circles - very time consuming but I feel I'm getting the delicate texture I want - thought I'd try something different to separate the fabric from the skin.

Here's where I'm at now:

Jenny, it is looking fantastic and I commend you for experimenting. It is working well.

03-06-2011, 08:13 PM
The new section - the way you captured the thin fabric over her knee - wow!!! This will be a spectacular piece.

03-06-2011, 08:45 PM
VERY nicely done; can't wait to see it completed. Love the texture of the skin and fabric.

03-07-2011, 01:38 PM

It worked:thumbsup:

03-13-2011, 11:26 PM
A-Ha...so that's what she's doing! This is looking fantastic Jenny! And that 'delicate' look you were going for is definitely working...her skirt looks very fine.(in both senses of the word) :)

03-14-2011, 01:16 PM
Very delicate piece of work. Gail

03-14-2011, 02:45 PM
What a great texture with your circle technique!! Love the contrast and lighting as well.

03-14-2011, 03:02 PM
Sorry I'm late. You have a terrific piece going Jenny. The textures work great. It would seem to be a very successful experiment.

03-15-2011, 03:31 PM
I'm almost finished with the figure but now have to select a bg design! I don't want to copy the entire ref but feel that its not balanced as is. I straightened the original ref as you will see. I printed off my image and tried several ideas out. I would appreciate your input as to which idea is gonna work best - I just used white charcoal to roughly sketch out my ideas.

I definitely like #2 the best, top right.

03-15-2011, 03:44 PM
Thank you Diana for getting back so quick. I'm thinking to make it simple and not busy as I want her to be the main focus. So it looks like you and I are on the same page:thumbsup:

03-15-2011, 06:17 PM
#2 first and #1 second for me.

Harry Seymour
03-15-2011, 07:40 PM
I agree about #2.

03-16-2011, 02:44 AM
Yup, it's unanimous...#2.

03-16-2011, 07:59 AM
This is beautiful - it has a delicate feel to it, lovely so far - I say number 2 as well, I like that composition :)

03-16-2011, 09:11 AM
I like #1, then #2.... this is looking fabulous and whichever you choose will make a wonderful background.

03-22-2011, 08:49 PM
I'm just about finished - please let me know if the glass is ok as I'm getting prints done tomorrow and then framing it for a local competition.
Thanks everyone for the support:thumbsup:

Uploader not working will try again soon:( :crying:
