View Full Version : Acrylics over oils with a sealer in between

In a recent thread, I asked whether anyone had ever used a product such as shellac-based Zinsser B-I-N Primer-Sealer before painting acrylics over oils. The mfgr of this product claims that the shellac bonds to oils as well as acrylics and the product is used by commercial and industrial painters when painting acrylics over oils.

When I queried WC artists, I got aghast gasps that this was impossible and that my work would be destroyed. However, when I did a test run, I was able to successfully bond artist acrylics to the Zinsser sealer.

Now my questions to you folks:

What is your success in getting artist acrylics to successfully bond to this sealer?
Although the mfgr of the sealer claims the adhesion is superior to and will outlast the acrylic paint, is this true for artist acrylics? Thanks for your answer.
