This is on a 12x12 Claybord. So far on the comb and jowly parts I have used an electric eraser and a pencil eraser. On the beak i used the scalpel.
I actually have a name for it, but we can get into that later.

Thanks Angela! I am hoping to get into a show in a couple of weeks in a neighboring town called Petaluma. The show celebrates the Eggs and Butter festival. At one time Petaluma was known as the chicken capital of the world. (Now it is world renowned for wrist wrestling). That's why I chose to do a chicken.:smug:

By the way, it is also where they filmed "American Graffiti" and "Peggy Sue Got Married" I know, big Whoop!!

Here is another image and a close up.

After I posted this I saw two more comments so I am editing this part in. Thank you Rodman and Harry!!!:D

Love it!!

I really like the texture that you are getting with the erasers. I am definitely going to have to give them a try. Looks great!!

02-25-2011, 01:53 PM
Looking mighty good so far!

02-25-2011, 05:32 PM
The erasers worked well for the comb and waddle...I'll be following along with the rest!

02-25-2011, 05:59 PM
Looking very proud of himself!! This should be fun!

02-25-2011, 07:39 PM
Wonderful! You are the master of technique and textures.

02-25-2011, 07:44 PM
Looks great...will you be adding color?

02-26-2011, 12:08 AM
Oh Diana, one of my favorite things, can't tell you why, but I have always been drawn to Chickens, even have a few in the kitchen (no not real ones) LOL. Just love the comb and wattle, can't wait to see you do wonders with the feathers.

02-26-2011, 01:38 AM
Great Study in textures . Rooster comes to roost ?

02-26-2011, 11:40 AM

Please forgive the group "Thank you". I am getting ready to go hang a show with 16 pieces.
There will be no color added to this one.
I wanted to let you know that I was thinking of calling it "Guess What". In the reference it is standing with it's back to the camera kinda looking over it's shoulder. My husband said most people won't get the title and theres a chance that those that do get it won't think it's funny. So maybe I will change the title. Anyway, thanks all!

02-26-2011, 02:57 PM
Can't wait to see the finished product. Sure looks great so far and I will have to try my electric eraser. Neat effect.

Thank you Fay!

Here is my latest photo. I have been using the camera since the good scanner died. It's kinda hard, learning something new. But I am learning and the shots aren't so bad. I do have to work on them a lot on the computer and I can't get the close ups like I used to with the good scanner. And BTW, this is the full board.

02-27-2011, 12:47 PM
"The Cross-Roader"...
[coming along terrifically...]

Harry Seymour
02-27-2011, 01:03 PM
This is coming along beautifully. Not only is the "Guess What" appropriate it is 'guess what' with an "attitude."

02-27-2011, 01:53 PM
Diana that is just gorgeous! American Graffiti---awesome!!

02-27-2011, 05:23 PM
That is a beautiful chicken!

02-27-2011, 06:41 PM
Very very clever work with the four major textures so far.

02-27-2011, 09:39 PM
Wonderful Diana! Great textures and I love the angle/composition of the chicken.

Speaking of Petaluma, I love it there. I think it would be a nice place to live. We like to go to Pt. Reyes and we'll often stop at Old Chicago Pizza on the way home. And I've seen the banners for the "Butter & Eggs Festival", makes me chuckle every time!

02-27-2011, 09:40 PM
 I must be tired or dense but I"m one of the ones who don't get it? Care s'plain Lucy?:wink2: :D

To me it looks like he's saying "You Comin'" (across the road?):D

Looking very good Diana.

Thanks Robert!
Thak you Harry!
Thanks BethAnn, I thought it was awesome too. I recognize a lot of the landmarks in the movie.
Thank you Steff!
Thanks Patrick!
Thank you Ann. Next time you are in the neighborhood it would be great if you could stop by.
Thanks Lorna! It may be reginal, but it is something dumb that kids say. It was said by my generation, (when we were kids) and my children's generation. And it is funny that I hear it from my grandkids generation.

Whenever someoneone asks you "Guess What?" the response is "Chicken Butt!" I know it doesn't really make sense, but kids aren't known for making sense.

02-28-2011, 04:42 AM
 Never heard that one before!

Diana Lee
02-28-2011, 02:03 PM
That might be an interesting poll. Who's heard that one?
Lorna, My husbands neice took her two year old to the doctor for her check up and the two year old asked the doctor "Guess what" and the doctor said "WHAT?" and the little sweetie said "Chicken butt" The doctor was not amused. I thought it was funny.:o

Here is the latest photo.

Brb..im dialing 911....I think my jaw broke when it hit the floor...absolutely and completely. Amazi.g work....this is a " WOW" piece for sure....

02-28-2011, 02:32 PM
Wow his feathers are beautiful. Never heard the chicken but joke. Guess dr.s don't like to joke about buts. :)

02-28-2011, 03:51 PM
I've heard the chicken joke, although we never used it when we were growing up. I think "Guess What" is a cool title.

Chicken butt is looking great Diana! The way the feathers drape is fantastic.

BTW, I was going through piles of stuff and came across an Artist's Magazine with a page I'd marked. And whaddaya know, it was your drawing of "Like Minds"!! I'd seen it in your signature and it looked familiar . . . well now I know why!

02-28-2011, 06:48 PM
Oh! those TEXTURES !
Terrific! ...and the feathers! WOW!

Gee Diana. Don't know how I missed this one. I am in absolute awe at the textures and the scratching in this. it will be a prizewinner I am sure. Pulling up a chair.

03-01-2011, 01:14 AM
The feathers are amazing, the whole picture is fabulous, it makes me want a rooster... sort of. :D

Diana you are a fantastic artist!

03-01-2011, 08:26 AM
Just amazing!!

03-01-2011, 09:44 AM
This will be a winner for sure! What a beautiful piece!!

My niece used to tell that "Chicken Butt" joke all the time. She would follow it up with the question "Guess Why?". After asking her "Why", she would respond "Chicken Thigh". Sad, I know. :)

03-01-2011, 10:47 AM
Most fascinating work on feather

03-01-2011, 01:25 PM
Very striking texture work. Love it!

03-01-2011, 06:23 PM
Originally I was thinking "not going to colour it? It begs for colour", but now having seen it to this stage, it's wonderful black and white!!

Diana Lee
03-01-2011, 06:52 PM
Thanks Rodman!!
Angela, if a dr can't laugh at a cute 2 yr old saying that joke, then I say maybe it is time to look for a different dr.
Thanks Ann! Getting into Artist's Mag is one of my prouder moments.;)
Thanks Bert!:)
Thank you Harry!
Thanks Lorna!
Thank you Gail!
Thanks Lesley!
Thank you Sandra!:D
Thanks Irfan!
Thank you Brett. I never heard that one, but my husband said he did.
Thank you VENKAT! That means alot coming from you.
Thanks Lynn!
Thanks Patrick!:wink2: I have been staying away from color more than I would like, but in my mission to get scratchboard recognized I don't want to confuse the people with too much information. Once I get the people around here used to seeing scratchboard I will start introducing more color, and take it to the next step.

Now back to work. I am planning to smooth out the comb and waddle just a tad.

03-02-2011, 08:18 PM
oooh wow what an attitude this guy has, this is looking fantastic!

03-03-2011, 07:52 PM

03-04-2011, 03:13 AM
My niece used to tell that "Chicken Butt" joke all the time. She would follow it up with the question "Guess Why?". After asking her "Why", she would respond "Chicken Thigh". Sad, I know. :)

 Too cute!

How's about an update there, girly!:D

I was just going through an old picture file and came across a picture that I believe Katy (rewston) took that I was going to do in a scratch. Now that you've shown me how Diana,:wink2: :D I just may do it!

Do you remember the one I mean Katy?

Diana Lee
03-04-2011, 03:23 PM
Thank you Katy! In the photo I used He had a much meaner look. I rounded the eye a bit. BTW I forgot to mention that the reference is from jyvonne in the RIL.
Thanks Terri!
Thank you Cathy! Yes, the feathers were very fun!
Yes it is Rodman, must have been a subconscious implant.:D
Thanks Wendy, (BTW you are a goof!!)
Thank you Judy!
Lorna, please do, I would love to see it.
Your wish is my command, here is an update.

It is just about done. I will leave it a few days and see if it needs tweeking.
I sure do miss my scanner, this is the best I can do for now.

03-04-2011, 03:27 PM
he looks just fabulous! i love his attitude and the pose is great too.

Lorna my memory is terrible so i cant remember which one you mean but it was probably one of my old rooster Strider :)

03-04-2011, 03:46 PM
this is breathtaking. amazing!

03-04-2011, 04:10 PM
Just wonderful Diana! I'm kinda surprised you didn't finish to the bottom of the board but it works well!

Katy...that's the one...Beautiful bird!

03-04-2011, 04:13 PM
Oh Diana, It's out of this world. Those feathers are so plush. Just when I think i have seen the best of scratchboard out pops this one. Have you used some f/g brushing on the feathers? Love the way you have inked back the long tail feathers. It has such depth. Am really really enjoying its progress.

Diana Lee
03-04-2011, 04:36 PM
Thanks Katy. Strider is beautiful!
Aw, thanks Hector!
Thank you Lorna. It is very unusual for me not to finish to the bottom, but this piece seemed to ask to be done this way.
Thanks Lesley!!!! Very kind words, indeed!!!!

03-04-2011, 06:54 PM
I agree that this works well without being finished to the bottom of the board. Besides, it may be better that there is not too much detail around the entire chicken butt. :D

03-04-2011, 07:21 PM
Gosh!!!!!!

Harry Seymour
03-04-2011, 08:32 PM
