Well, since I bought my pastels, visited this forum and joined the sketch thread last Monday, I've produced six little pictures in six days ~ I've never been so productive before! I thought it might be fun to do a little review in thumbnails. The first four below were from life, the last two I did today and are based on photos from the WC image reference library [haven't posted the most recent before, so I've included a larger version too].

The verdict: I LOVE pastels!! Before, I feared they would be a messy, hard to control medium. Well, they are :) but I'm starting to get to know them, and already I'm realising that nothing can beat them for their immediacy and their beautiful, luminous colours. Thanks so much to Dawn, Sunny and everyone in the weekly sketch thread who encouraged me and took the time to make a comment on something I drew. And thanks to Jackie for her informative book and video, which have certainly helped me a lot. Cheers all.

I like what you've done here, E-J, but I really really like the landscape and sunflowers! What size are they?

Nice work!

Wow!! Well done - I love the sunflower one especially - looks like you got this down pretty darn quick! Very inspiring to see that kind of learning curve. They are all beautiful!

Bev, the poppy field is very small, painted on a 7x5" watercolour board over a wash of burnt sienna. First time I've tried pastels on a watercolour surface and the texture is rather pleasant. The sunflowers are about twice that size.

Pictures based on photos are always a bit more impressive but I really only did them to practise the techniques I've learnt. It's the sketches from life that I'm really learning from. The image ref library is a brilliant resource, though ~ I've got no excuse anymore for not having the inspiration to paint!

E-j wow nice work . I am new to pastels and have done 2 and 1/2 he he . this medium is so inspiring. I did these in a week and a half , whereas my oils usually take me years to finish:clap: :)

I just tried them because a friend bullied me into it now I am the only one in the bunch that has gone nuts!!
