This was a stretch of a scratch....i tried to airbrush color rather than black ink,,,,then scratched it like i would the black,,,,back and forth....add and subtract,,,,ill try to explain what i did,,,,i took a piece of cheap poster board...laid out the images (fish, crab, boat ) on the poster board....the idea was that if i cut these out with a x-acto i could use the pieces to mask AROUND or mask OVER ( protect ) a area.....to say,..... cut out the fish shape....remove and save that piece..... airbrush inside the shield.....then you can lay that saved piece over this area before and after any scratching.....

pic 1... the posterboard cut

pic 2...airbrushed color at the whiteboard thru the cardboard mask

pic 3 first layer of airbrush complete,,,,then the add and subtract comes in.....airbrush on...scratch off...

pic 4 blue fish close up

pic 5 boat is painted....the bluefish was covered with the saved shape the background is still covered at this point

pic 6 the boat was then covered with its piece and the water was sprayed in...

the circles holding the mask are magnets.....my drawing table is steel ( covered with a ....well.....cover )and the magnethttp://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Feb-2011/19717-MASK.jpg http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Feb-2011/19717-BLUEFISH_AIRBRUSHED.jpg http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Feb-2011/19717-BLUEFISH_AIRBRUSHED_UNMASKED.jpg http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Feb-2011/19717-BLUEFISH_CLOSE.jpg http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Feb-2011/19717-BOAT_MASKED.jpg s hold well enough to hold the shields down...

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Feb-2011/19717-BLUEFISH_BOAT_WATER.jpg pic 6.... i honestly am scrapping it out....or at least setting it aside to see if a way of saving it comes to me....nothing ventured....nothing gained... at least i had fun making a mess. ha

You can scrap it my way......

Actually, I really like it.... nice crisp & clear colours. It has the beginnings of something about to happen, maybe something comical. One more little item might give it that punch you are looking for. Maybe a mermaid sitting by the stern in the curve of the hull..... or something else to give it just that little bit of punch possibly to indicate beginnings of a story. I love the crab, he looks so sad.. probably cause you said you were going to scrap it. :wink2:

Why ya scraping it?
A few more hours in you hands and I think you'll make it work.

Neat - very neat - idea!!!!

Maybe, once it's all done, a unifying ink wash over the whole thing to tie it all in...like a very thin wash that's a mix of all your dominant colours right across everything so each piece has some of the surrounding colour in, signifying relected light. Possible?

Interesting experiment and Patrick's suggestion is a good one. I think it is well worth salvaging.

It's a great story. I would use all of those colours in a choppy sea with waves crashing over the crab and the fish. Or what about some coloured sand, little tiny dots of colour, and a few shells.

Yeah, you can scrap it my way if you don't want it. I through my kanga in the bin because I thought it was a lost cause but now it's may favourite work of mine.

Just put it away for a while and come back to it.

What failed. Just needs to be finished. Is that a shark in front of the fishes eye?
Great idea with the masks.

Hey Rodman, you probably know this, but there is a liquid latex that peels off that you can use to mask your work before you airbrush. Maybe some others don't know about so here is the link

I don't see failure...I see a really neat experiment that doesn't look quite finished yet. Set it aside for a bit and the way your imaginative mind works, I'm sure the solution will come to you.

Thanks you guys...im not trashing it because of where its at....im trashing it for where I see it going... I will set it aside...im pretty sure,im right about this one...ha

Well so far its not my favourite...the colours aren't jellin for me, BUT I'm going to add a"Yet" because I do know your particular genius and I know, as everyone else here does, that you will turn it into something outrageously Awesome! And I can't wait...

I will hold my thoughts until you finish it. I am sure we will see more of it. Rick

I just scrapped a board too... Well, at least some of the fun was in messing it up. :D

I like the concept that you're going after with the stencils. It reminds me of pochoir. I'll be interested to see your second go round!
