This looks really good Rick. I love them too so I'm going to enjoy this
02-13-2011, 04:02 PM
This gator looks like its working up great, lots of scales and look at those teeth. Oooooh! Frightening ! I can't bring myself to doing any scratchboard of scary creatures. I admire your variety of subject matter. Can't wait to see the progress.

Good looking start Rick! Next time could you post a bigger picture for those of us that are visually challenged...or just plain nosy? I fall into both categories. :wink2: :D
02-13-2011, 06:14 PM
This should be very good. Great start.
02-13-2011, 07:29 PM
Looking great all ready.
02-13-2011, 08:04 PM
Allan this one was in a sanctuary in Crystal River. Thanks for looking in.
Thanks Diana, It seems like forever since I have had a chance to do scratch board.
Patrick Thanks, I wish I had been on location at feeding time. They have them come out of the water for chickens. It is pretty impressive. Subject for a future work.
Thank you Gail, I do like to try it all.
Thanks Irfan, Good to see you in here.
Lorna I will see what I can do.
Thank you Angela, Now to start on the BG.
This has not had any washes or fine tuning, I will attend to that after I get the bg worked out.
02-13-2011, 08:07 PM
Thanks for the larger picture, I always zoom up, just old eyes I guess. Really great work, will be looking for the finished post.

Cool subject, Rick. You've really captured the look of an old gator with nowhere to go in a hurry. Looking forward to more.
02-14-2011, 01:00 AM
This subject is rarely represented in SB. There is a lot work on skin texture ,that is already visible in your work. Will be waiting for the updates.
02-14-2011, 02:12 AM
Crystal River eh? I have family near there. I'll have to ask ya where it is next time I go down. Last year we went to Homosassa Springs State Park. Had a HUGE gator grumbling at us....It was cool
This big guy is looking good....can't wait to see the BG
02-14-2011, 02:19 AM
Thanks for the zoom Rick:thumbsup:...it's coming along nicely!
02-14-2011, 08:04 AM
This is super... and what a wonderful animal, so much detail to play with. Can't wait for the final reveal; it's going to awesome!
02-14-2011, 10:33 AM
It's coming along nicely
02-14-2011, 05:19 PM
Thanks Greg, Glad you are looking in on this one.
Brett, I know what you mean about that look. They are actually quite cunning by just laying there with no movement. It will allow the next meal to forget about the danger.
Hey Venkat, Glad you a re here. I plan to do a was over the entire upper section and work the texture of that area into the washed surface. It will be subtle .
Allan, You are the man, That is the same gator. I should have said "close" to Crystal River. The Hippo that is there will be a subject in the near future.
Thanks Lorna and you are welcome.
Thank you Jack
Update wil be a few days ,got to go get references of cypress trees. Oh wait theres a few right outside. Good ole Florida. Rick
02-14-2011, 06:13 PM
I love the look of these incredible creatures. You doing this one justice. Good Job Rick!
02-14-2011, 08:06 PM
Keep it coming Rick--looking good.
02-14-2011, 10:02 PM
This really looks neat. A lot of work in it. And nicely done.
02-14-2011, 11:11 PM
Thanks Pamela, I appreciate it. I got a few questions for you, I will pm.
Okay Harry ,here is a small update. I guess you all have realized by now that I change my plans every time I start working on a piece. I was going to wait to get the top section of the gators hide started but I couldn't wait. Not finished with it but you can start to see the hides texture develop.
Thanks Lynn, Lots remaining also.
Pay no attention to the bg it is just an idea for now. I hope to ad some interest but I worry about the composition. I akways have an idea about what I want but never sure of how it will work. I guess we will find out together. Rick

Admirable work on the texture of the skin . This was hardly noticed in smaller size pictute. Close up reveals that
02-15-2011, 01:22 PM
Oooooo!! I love the close ups! Thank you! He does look well fed! I wonder who's in there?
02-15-2011, 05:05 PM
Aw man that gator is looking great. Contact Gatorade they should use that image. :)
02-15-2011, 07:01 PM
Thought I recognized this Big guy :D It was mating season when we were there...he must have thought one of us looked Gooooooooood
When ya do the Hippo are ya gonna include the 'Splash Zone" warning sign? My kids thought that was hilarious!
Great job on this too! Keep on scratchin'
02-15-2011, 09:34 PM
Diana, This guy has it made lay around and eat. Wait ,...that's what I do.
Angela, Thanks, you are so kind. Down here there are a lot of Florida Gator fans so these things market fairly well.
Allan, too funny, I was taking photos and did not see the sign and the attendant had to warn me because Lou was about to zero in on me.
This has a long way to go but I like to update after every days work. so here it is. I have several bunches of cat tails to put in place and every thing will need to be completed. Thanks for looking Rick
02-15-2011, 09:38 PM
Yeh, that gator is content and should be in that wonderful color harmony.
02-15-2011, 11:02 PM
Rick, you always pick a challenge for yourself. I like that. The gator is looking great and the bg as well.
02-16-2011, 01:35 AM
Zero in on ya? That would have been bad....unless someone caught it on video
The close-ups you posted earlier look dang Good....all aligatery :D
It's coming together nicely
02-17-2011, 10:23 PM
Thanks for staying in here Harry, More to go but getting closer, I think.
Harold, I hope I can pull this one off.
Allan, Thanks I appreciate it.
Still plenty of fine tuning to do. Rick
02-17-2011, 10:30 PM
You have sure given him a fun environment to be in and great job on the coloring
02-18-2011, 03:51 AM
Nice one Rick, great colors.
02-18-2011, 04:15 AM
This is looking great Rick, I saw some of these guys in Queenland in captivity, they look very intimidating!
02-18-2011, 06:01 AM
Wow...look at you go...it's looking fantastic Rick!
02-18-2011, 09:55 AM
Grrrrrhhhhh--this is awesome!
02-18-2011, 10:12 AM
Rick....wow..this really has turned the corner....from the WIP stage to the almost there stage... keep going!!!
02-18-2011, 11:44 AM
I sure like the colour of the light Bright and low and yellowing.....close to sunset I'm guessing. I really like the BG one question I have though.....are those evergreen tree's? I wasna aware there would be any in the land of a gator. Please excuse my ignorance of the Floridian flora! :o
02-18-2011, 12:15 PM
Yes, beautiful colors! This is turning out incredibly well!!!! How close were you to take this picture? This background helps me feel warm. California turned on us and it is dank and cold.
02-18-2011, 12:26 PM
02-18-2011, 01:04 PM
Thank you Wendy
Thank you Lorna
Pamela, The outline of the trees do look like an evergreens in this photo but this is also the shape of many cypress trees from a distance. I have already started removing some of the green in spots to allow the sky to show through. I may have a closer cypress in the water on the far shore before all is done and it will be close enough to identify the species, I hope.
02-18-2011, 02:47 PM
Wow Rick, this is really cool. Loving the background too.
02-18-2011, 05:08 PM
Diana and Angela, Sorry I missed you on the last comments.
Diana, Thank you. I was about twenty yards away but was on the other side of a fence as well. I have seen what ma-nature is doing to most of the country, glad this gives you warm feelings.
Thanks Lynn, It still has some issues but it is at least past the real ugly stage.
I have worked on the proper shading of the gator and put a shadow from the palm across his back. Refined some of the silhouetted trees in the far bg. I am wanting to put some in the far shoreline but haven't built up the nerve yet. If placed properly, I think that will camouflage the initial picket fence of trees that started the bg.
I do have a show for this one tomorrow, so the changes will have to come tonight. Thanks for looking. I will post an update of the final changes tomorrow, or late tonight. Rick
02-18-2011, 11:07 PM
Goodness, this has changed a lot since I last had chance to look in. Amazing work Rick - loving it!!
02-19-2011, 05:14 AM
I saw it in the beginning and it really has changed completely. Love the colours Rick. And that texture is unbelievable!
02-19-2011, 12:15 PM
Thank you Lesley
Pam, Thanks for pointing out the trees. I guess I knew they looked out of place but I thought it was just the position. I thinned the foliage of them a bit, added some moss and more light gaps. They look a bit more like young cypress but are probably out of scale for the distance they are at. I put two different types of cypress in the far shore to help breakup the trees in the sky line. Your comment was most helpful, Thanks Rick
I see the picture came out blurred ,sorry.
02-19-2011, 01:39 PM
You should be smiling like that Gator
The shadow you added on the big guy is a great touch!
Love the palm tree as it unfolds up the trunk.
There are a lot of things I could comment on but I'll leave some for the others here :D
Great Board Rick  Good luck with the Show!
02-19-2011, 03:48 PM
He sure looks menacing Rick. I love the way that water sweeps around the bend. Gives it such movement. And the colours are awesome. There's so ,much to like about this project. I keep looking at it and see more detail and interest spots each time. Love it!
02-19-2011, 06:23 PM
Looks great Rick.... that bg does look challenging .. sorry...im no help
