I think I just remembered what it is! is it carving into bone?
If it is I believe it is a very hard thing to learn.
Am I right?

Scrimshaw originally was done by bored sailors on whaling ship. All up and down the coasts you will see examples, it was done on ivory or whalebone or whale or walrus ivory, usally decorative items for the ladies back home.
Mine was imported from bad places and I stopped. The only legal scrimshaw now is from fossilized mastadon.
It is scratched into the surface and the sailors took charcoal or black burnt stuff. We scrubbed india ink and then buffed off the rest.
This was well over 25 years ago, so I am no longer part of the illegal ivory trade. At worst I have a brittle collection of old knives and piano key tops left if I ever want to get back to it.
This was a cab about an inch long, the triangle shape is from how it was a pie shaped section from a larger tusk.
We sold it as jewelry and would occasionally get our own ivory a bonuses. I did whale tooth one time with fighting ships and a couple of fighting grizzlies.
So that is scrimshaw.

In my youth, I worked in a scrimshaw sweatshop. I have none of it left, but I made a piece for a friend and he took the bolo he set it in and laid it on the scanner. This is the best I could get for quality so I tried to vignette the horse.
My eyes have sinced degraded....
