This is where you will post your classroom exercises. This thread will only be used for that purpose.

As requested in the student discussion thread here's a photo to maybe look at tonight in the class.

This is one from Cumbria England which attracted me because of the path and the wall. But there are problems with it of course. I'd be interested to see if you think it is worth using as a ref.

Gggrrrrr!! The uploader's not working again! It uploads the photo but won't put it in the thread.
Lets try attaching.....so I did something wrong? That doesn't work either. Hope others have better luck! Doh! It did it!

Let's see if this will work or not! Sorry, apparently not! I'll keep trying. I've tried as an attachment, too. Its 800 by 600, jpg, and under 1 MB. Should be fine? Hmm. Hope I won't miss the class, but I'm determined to get this! ;)

Maybe I've worn this post out! :D I'll try a new one. Sorry--not working. You guys will just have to miss the most incredible photo in the world, I guess. (I can say that since you'll probably never get to see it at this rate!)

I try to paint local scenes because that's what I know, what will perhaps sell in our local artist run small gallery, and what I can photograph myself. Within an hours drive in any direction there are no mountains, hills, bumps, dips, or valleys, very few everygreens and those only in planted tree rows, no waterfalls, rock formations or rolling waves, no cliffs, winding roads, or twisting streams. Hopefully after this course I'll know how to handle this. It's so frustrating.

I had a hard time getting my photos to go through the upload process, so just so we don't miss some of your great photos I thought I'd tell you that I had to install a photo converter in order to get my photos to go through.
I used a free coverter from www.freeimageconverter.com and once I converted my images to size 800X600 and quality 70 I changed my photo names to numbers and saved them to my desktop. Then I used the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of this page, and pressed the picture of a mountain with yellow background in the icons "insert a picture" and browse to find my picture, then upload and I could see my picture in the message window and sumitted the chat box. Hope this helps some of you are stuck!

Hi, Johannes,
Here are three Arizona sunset pictures that I took and would like feedback on how to make them work in a landscape. Although I love them, they're difficult for me in terms of working out a pleasing composition. They have not been photoshopped--this is exactly how I saw them. Hope you have time for this. Here are three of San Diego--which one would make the better composition? And I simply don't know how to handle the snowy Mt. Kalish, although I would love to paint it. It is so recognizable to Buddhists and others that I can't alter it too much, but it has the no-no "clone" rocks on its face peaking through the snow and I can't just leave them off.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/30-Jan-2011/71540-SanDiego.JPG http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/30-Jan-2011/71540-SanDiego2.JPG http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/30-Jan-2011/71540-SanDiego3.JPG http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/30-Jan-2011/71540-TibetKailash.JPG

and then post the link to that photo. Also when you post photos on this thread, in each case please indicate in text that it is YOUR photo and you are granting me the rights to use that photo to publicly display for comment, editing and recording and that you waive all copyrights. I will only use the photos that contain that statement. If you have already submitted a photo then do it again and include the waiver.

Sorry, this is my second photo because Jo mentioned that he didn't want any buildings in the photo just landscape. My first photo is on page 3 (#31) and has houses in it. It was the colour of the light that attracted me to the scene.

I took this in Niagara, Ontario, Canada on a winery tour on a sunny warm day. I am overwhelmed by the amount of green.

I took this photo; I am granting Johannes Vloothuis the right to to publicly display them for comment, editing and recording, and I waive the copyrights for that use.

Just in case this one gets overlooked I confirm that I took this photo and it has been submitted within the terms of the WC user agreement....which includes F&W media being able to use it for DVD's and downloads. Specifically I grant Johannes the right to use it in his on line classes in any way he chooses.

Now those of you who've posted images which are not yours and not copyright free better remove them if you can :) I see one with a person's copyright actually on it!

As requested in the student discussion thread here's a photo to maybe look at tonight in the class.

This is one from Cumbria England which attracted me because of the path and the wall. But there are problems with it of course. I'd be interested to see if you think it is worth using as a ref.

Oh, ok, I hadn't realized that. It is automatic, with membership, so I thought maybe the people posting it just didn't know.
I just popped in because I got a couple of pms and emails asking for help.

Wendy, I (and I'm sure a lot of others) appreciate your trying to help people. This course is creating a lot of people who are totally unfamiliar with not only WC but discussion groups in general, as well as GoToMeeting. So it's good you're trying to watch out for this kind of "mistake." (And I think it's probably fair to assume that the VAST majority of WC members have never read the User Agreement, doncha think? Hehe.)

Funny thing is-- Johannes wound up just starting at page 1 to go thru photos. He paid no attention whatsoever to his own request. :D He did skip over, without showing, the one photo from a magazine or book, whichever it was.

I'm already in the Webinar posting the photos.

Of course one question is - which photo is better to paint from?

I am sharing these photos with WetCanvas members as if they're in the Reference Image Library. I am sharing nonexclusive rights with Johannes Vloothuis and F&W Media to publish them in the webinar and associated materials to help sell the webinar.

Students attending or purchasing the webinar course after it's ended have my permission to sketch and paint from these photos too. Though I think they'd get the most out of it by joining WC and coming back to read all the old class threads, they don't have to.

It's a bit moot since they wouldn't read this permission without joining WC to see this thread though. I just got recursive and legalistic. I do want to share the photos and already did share these two as part of a Weekend Drawing Event.

Sorry, I got carried away, posted too many, so I narrowed it down to three, I hope that's not too much.

Crop;

The background hills need to be made more melodic, the sky needs more interest and too many of the tops of the trees line up.

I'm not too sure how I feel about this one. I think the middle ground needs to be simplified, too much going on there, though the sky needs some interest added. Removing most of the water was definately a good move.

Another excellent class today! Here is my cropping exercise.

The first image is one I took of a flock of Great Egrets at the mouth of the Salmon River on the Oregon coast in early morning light. Since I am a birder, this was primarily a crop to show the whole flock of birds and enough of the background to set the scene. I first tried to paint this scene as in the photo, and quickly realized I was trying to say everything in one painting, as Johannes said. (I did reduce the number of egrets.)

The second image is a crop with a 3x4 aspect ratio since I wanted to do an oil version of this on an 18x24 canvas. I tried another smaller watercolor that had some issues, and refined the composition in a thumbnail, and then came up with something I thought worked. So...

The third image is where I am with a WIP of the 18 x 24 inch canvas. There's a bit more to be done on it. Overall, I like it, but there are some obvious issues that Johannes I'm sure will point out - the small peninsula where the egrets are is too triangular...that I'm going to fix. The lines defining the top of the closest two headlands in the distance are not melodic enough, though they're better than I would have made them without Johannes' classes. I'm not sure I will try to fix them on this painting because I like a lot about how the painting is coming out overall. But I'll reserve that decision until I think about it a bit more. More likely, I think I may be finally comfortable enough with this composition and the problems with it that I'll take a blank canvas and try one more time.

I took some liberties with the actual scene, though it would still be recognizable to someone familiar with the area. I also reduced the number of egrets to make them more an active part of the composition, and faced the far right egret into the painting rather than out of it.

Hopefully Johannes will have some additional helpful comments here as well.

Except for the sky I like this one. Well, the shore line could be made a bit more melodic as well.

David,

Your posts are interesting, but I would suggest limiting it to one per person. There were close to a thousand people on the lecture today. If 10% of the participants post 12 each, we have 1200 posts from one class. Gets a bit unwieldy. Just a suggestion. :)

I narrowed it down to three, is that better? I'm sure he's not going to respond to all of them anyway, so I'll be happy if he comments on just one of mine, I'll let him decide.

doing this was a lot harder then I thought it would be. my Thoughts on this photo is to take out the front neg value and put a little more light ice and water. Take out the left hand bush and make more of a curve to the creeck. Could be very wrong but those are my thoughts.

I've tried dozens of crops and come to the conclusion the better of my two photos looks better without cropping. It still needs work, but cropping may not be the best answer. Enlarging some elements and reducing others would be a lot more effective.

I chose the Mt. Petit Jean Cliffs photo because it has so many planes in it. Fortunately, I took this and did some very bad sketches at the time that mostly sharpened my visual memory.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/05-Feb-2011/70184-Class-MtPetitJeanCliffs-robertsloan2.jpg

I chose this one over the other one since it didn't have the problematic big diagonal and has more planes.

That rock in the foreground needs to be bigger and flatter. I played with cloning it to expand it and will keep playing with it in the thumbnail stage. It needs a place to stand. The vegetation that's so close-up part of the foreground needs to be chopped shorter, this will give the cliffs themselves more area in the painting. I'm also going to enlarge the "cliffs mass" more to steal some space from the plane behind it.

I tried so many crops, but not one of them actually worked by itself. I'd lose the sky or lose my foreground to get close enough and put the cliff where I wanted it.

I remember the scene though.

If I was sitting down where I stood, the cliffs would have more space and the rock wouldn't be this goofy little pointy thing. I remember how big it was. So this one to turn into a good painting will need a lot of work in the "thumbnails" stage. Fortunately, I'm so practiced at drawing rocks that making up the rock in the foreground bit is going to be relatively easy.

I could also shove the cliffs a bit to the right to make more of a zig zag and push the foreground rock toward the left.

This is the only crop that almost worked:
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/05-Feb-2011/70184-Class-MtPetitJeanCliffs-robertsloan2-Crop3.jpg

If I crop it vertical and still shove the rock to the left, that might work. But I sort of like the whole scene better. Not sure why. I would still have to enlarge the cliffs mass and push it up.

I would diminish the size of the second ledge from the front and show water between the rocks to bring the eye into the picture.

CROPPING HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT JAN 5

This waterfall photograph would be cut into 4 crops:
The original has boxes to show where the crops were made.
These would be starting points which would still undergo changes in content, or placement.

Original photo cropped to an 8 x 10 proportion to give a steelyard composition. The lead in is understated, framed by an old collapsed rock corral which slows the eye travel into the painting. Leads you thru the corral past the trees with the distant fence line in midground being the focal point. Also, now has vanishing points on 3 planes (1) foreground, (2 & 3) midground . I would change the mountain range also so that it not straight, as Johannes recommends.

Ok I got my receipt via e-mail about the artist brian. And I though good lord that was expensive. Took a closer and found somehow the quantity was 2 instead of of 1. They were very good about fixing this issue. Just thought I'd let you know to check that quantity amount before you went to checkout.
