Wingnut

A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Horses in Motion
Project Leader: Wingnut
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Equine
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Horses in motion! Walk, trot, canter, gallop, spin, frolic, prance, buck... whatever! Anything but standing still (no, eating does NOT count as motion) Lol! The main subject must be equine (unicorns, zebras, mules, and donkeys etc... are okay) and you can have another type of animal included in the picture, just not as the MAIN subject!

This project is open to everyone, all skill levels, and all mediums. Also, you do not have just post finished works, you can post sketches and studies as well - this project is meant to be incentive to practice creating equines in motion.

I've included a few photos you can use, or you are certainly welcome to find your own inspirations.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=365)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Videos and DVDs are great to work from too! Of course the "pause" holds longer and clearer on a DVD - on a regular VCR you have to sketch fast! :D good practice.

Wow!! You must have sketched really really fast!!! Will you turn this into a painting now?

I've never tried sketching from a video - I'll have to give it a shot. Good movement, is the race over? the jockys sitting in the saddle.

LOL!!! Yes Li, that would be me ;) , but in my defense... this will be my third year only. I do get to take loads of refrence pics though, and see a beautiful area of California too.

Kind of like me and the Grand Canyon?? I was born in Arizona, but have never been there - leave it for the tourists!

Thanks for the comments, added a backgroung to this guy .. should have him done and posted soon!

have a great weekend!

I'm a little slow out of the block. This winter i boarded my horse out at a place in town. He's now the low horse in his pasture herd, so only motion out of him is getting chased by the boss horses. :)
But yesterday I remembered that i have some pics from Spruce Meadows. Now *there's* horses in motion!
I should have time to begin tonight

Well, I've signed up for the project, but don't have pics of my piece to put on here yet. I have a sculpture I started a couple of years ago and set aside to do commissions, etc., but now I think I may actually get it finished sometime soon. Got a bunch of reliefs to do before April too, so I'll post pics of whatever's cookin' as I get a chance. I'm enjoying seeing all y'all's work on here! We got to see our very first polo game a week ago in Wellington FL -- I shot 4 rolls of film of it! I can see some very interesting bronzes coming out of those pics -- I may even try painting them (yes, I AM crazy!! argh!!!) If I paint them, they won't be my normal realistic work, I just don't paint that well! BUt they're exciting and I can see all kinds of possibilities with them. . .can't wait to get them back from teh developer today!

no polo ponies for now -- got to get a cutting horse and a barrel horse (both reliefs) done ASAP, and I'm working on a full-body horse and rider that I'll post pics of soon. I race to do pieces for my business, so any pieces I post for "projects" won't be created specifically for the project -- they will just fit whatever criteria exists, but be pieces I'd already started or planned. Dunno if that's the way the rules around here go or not, but that's what works for me! Hope that's okay! Cutting horse and that 3-D horse are the next ones, anyway. Polo ponies are down the road a bit. . .

These three are wonderful - I agree with the above comment - wonderfully loose. This is what I'm trying with mine (but with less success ;))
A question about the fence post that is right above the barrel... because this happens to me and I'm eager to learn the reason & remedy..... The fence post appears closer to the viewer, almost right up against the can. The fence rails feel to be the right distance away, but not that one post.
So... is it the amount of detail? is it the colour? what?

Okay, here's mine so far. Will be 22 X 22, dyes on silk. It's a little hard to see at this point because it has a lot of resist ( gutta ) on it.

Any crits welcome, just keep in mind that I can't fix anything at this point. The down side of silk painting. Thanks for looking.

Stephanie

Thanks Stephanie.

I think you will have no trouble at all if you decide to try pastels. Your skill with colored pencil is amazing.

Silk painting is like anything else....practice, practice practice. The time consuming part is blocking each layer of lights with resist because the dyes flow and spread in all directions very fast. You cannot go in later and high light. After I'm done it will have to be steam set and then dry cleaned to remove the resist.

Can't wait to see your finished piece. ( P.S. I like the little horse the best too and the jeans are so realistic looking. )

Thanks. The little horse is also my favorite. I really don't care much right now for the bigger one. I guess I'll just have to keep working on him until I am satisfied with him.

As soon as I finish this one, I have another in mind. Well, actually two. Maybe I'll just start them both that way I don't have to decide :D !

Silk painting sounds really cool. Maybe after I get the guts to try pastels, I'll try that.

Thank you for your compliments ! This has been a hectic week ( life in general ) but I hope to have it finished tonight. I'm glad the progress entries have been helpful to your future silk painting. Trying my hand at horses was a challenge for me. Happily, the little herd near our house, and the mountain weather have been cooperating.

I look forward to seeing your finished piece.

Watercolor 8.5"x11" on 11x14 coldpressed. Unicorn running thru shallow water in the deep forest making a big splash... I tried to convey motion OVER detail...

I got this from a scene in an old movie called "Legend"

Please comment...

Ah, but you left the very young and tasty Tom Cruise out of the picture!!! heehee Nice piece, nice capture of motion and water splash -- sorry, the Cruise comment was just SCREAMING to get out! LOL!

Oh, this one won't be bronze. It will be handcast resin, painted and patinaed to look like bronze. Then it will sell for only $150. If it were bronze, there's no way I could sell it so cheaply. I will make a one-part mold on it and then cast it, clean it up, finish it and mount it, and do that over and over again as long as it sells well (it's an open edition) or as long as I like it. Some pieces I just get tired of and stop making them. Others show that I used to not be as good a sculptor as I am now and need to be retired for that reason. Some just don't sell as well, so I stop making those. These are "entry level art collecting" pieces for me -- pieces that people buy who like my work but can't afford bronze. I also have some 3-D resins for the same purpose, some that cost even less than this one will (it will probably sell for $150, but if I find less expensive frames than what I've been using, then I may sell them for less.

Just a note to everyone in the project: I AM looking (and loving!:) ) all the entries again and again - I just can't possibly comment on them all!

Thank you for making this such a fun (and helpful) project to watch progress! I hope more people (yes, even you newbies and usually non-horsey people! ;) ) are inspired to join, and the ones that already here will keep adding more beautiful work!

Hey, Wingnut. :-) No, not quite done yet. I reworked the mane today and started on the chaps and saddle. I MIGHT have this done tomorrow. *fingers crossed* lol

Fortunately (or unfortunately (depending on your outlook)) this will be long sold before next years National Western event. I already have two galleries interested in it, though no promises have been made and I hate counting chickens, unhatched or on the wing. ;-) Do you think there will ever be a chickens in motion project?

Here's the finished bronze -- I've posted pics on the project page too, but I'm not sure about how to cross between that place and this, so I'll just insert pics here. I had him done in two different patinas, black (which is the natural color of all Friesians, which is the breed depicted) and a marbled patina with burnished bronze high spots, which is just gorgeous art. Both versions have sold well so far -- I sold two blacks as pre-casting orders, and sold one black and one marble at Equine Affaire -- selling that many bronzes that fast is amazing!! Two of my cougar pieces also sold at Equine Affaire -- it was a great show for me!

Anyway, here are two patinas on "Maestoso"

I guess I haven't posted this one here yet. It's my newest bronze, titled "Oopsie!" both because of what's happening here and because it was created because I did an "oopsie" myself -- I had my extra clay (a small amount) and tools with me and forgot my work in progress at a 4 day show. I had to have SOMETHING to do between customers, so I got a piece of plywood out of my trailer and found a couple of screws and a little wire to attach the clay to the board, and thus "Oopsie" was born with no reference photos or measurements or anything. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, and I've already sold one (the sorrel one shown here). Lots of folks have told me they'll order one when their mares foal, so they can get it in the colors and markings of their mare and foal. (I'm offering this one in whatever patina people want, as a way of showing me what my wonderful new patina guy can do). Anyway, here's tiny little "Oopsie!"

ArtsyLynda
11-19-2003, 05:19 PM
"Oopsie" is a bronze, open edition (I've had inquiries about it as a trophy and it's so little and cute, I think it will sell a long time both as fine art and as trophies, so I'm not limiting the edition). It's 6 1/2" long x 4 1/4" deep by 2 3/4" high.

Thanks! I was really surprised it turned out so well, as I usually use lots of reference photos, a live horse as reference as well, and I had NONE of that, until a friend from Equine Art Guild sent me pics of her horse lying down so I could get the front legs better. My horses always jump up when I even leave the house, hoping "Mommy" is bringing them more cookies (I usually have a pocket full of horse cookies). :D so I can 't get pics like that of MY guys lying down, nor did I get a pic of this scene when it happened on our farm (more than once, but the little stinkers would wiggle off Mom before I could get the camera!) :) Foals are such fun.

Take your own photos. Find a horse farm in your area if you don't have horses yourself and ask permission to take pics of their horses. If you want an action picture (most horses at home spend the majority of their time grazing or sleeping), contact a breeding farm and ask if you can do a photo session of their stallion. They may just have him stand for you, but if you ask them for action pictures and they agree, they'll shake a stick with a paddle on the end that rattles (or whatever they use at that farm) to get the horse moving - then just be a good photographer. These days, I take video instead of stills so I can do frame capture on my computer to get the exact pose I'm looking for. The sessions I've done like this were for commissioned portraits, but I know some stallion owners don't mind getting their horses to show off for photographers. There might be a fee involved, especially if it's a famous horse. And it's polite to send copies of your best photos to the stallion owner.

I live in Bottineau, ND. There are no breeders here. Only farmers.

Are there wild horses there? Or other people who ride? Most folks who have horses will give permission for you to take pictures. If you can't Itake your own, you can buy stock photos online that are royalty free, or ask some photographer whose work you like for permission to use a photo of theirs. It will cost you varying amounts, depending on the individual photographer. I think you can use any of the photos in the reference library here for free. I've never done that, so check to be sure.
