A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!
Title: Feathers 'n' Fur
Project Leader: Gaka
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Wildlife
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited
Description:
Welcome to the February Pastel Forum project.
This months project is Australian wildlife, if you have not drawn wildlife before or you are a seasoned wildlife artist, here is your chance to participate in the drawing or painting two of Australia's wildlife icons the Cockatoo and the Kangaroo.
These can be painted in any style of Pastel painting that the artist chooses and any background feature can be added to enhance the overall painting. Painting from reference photo's is prefered but not essential as long as the subject remain the Cockatoo or Kangaroo.
Additional Information:
For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=364)
Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.
How cool!
Well, I think I'm going to choose to paint the Cockatoo.... now off to find some reference pictures.
If anyone has reference pictures they would like to share, I'll be glad to add them into the project links.
Thanks for doing this Gaka.
Me thinks it will have to be a ref pic for me, don't have any kangaroos or Cockatoos that will pose for me :)
Thanks Gaka, this should be a good one.
Hi Everyone
I have uploaded some Pics to the project and I will be loading some more Kangaroo and Cockatoo Pics in the next 24hrs to the reference Library in the "At the Zoo" section.
seeya Gaka
Ok I haven't officially signed up for this. But an ALL WHITE BIRD? OMG Am I crazy or what. I'm having a terrible time with these feathers and all this white. UGH
Gaka hints would help LOL I even tried making the bird gray first I've tried everything I can think of so far. LOL
Hi Luvy
Thank you for dropping by and Starting on a Cockatoo so soon...I put the Kangaroo up for the challenge of painting Fur and the White Cockatoo up as it appears to be an easy subject to paint being white....BUT it is very challenging also! I hope all the participants enjoy the project.
I hope to work on one later (Depending on time!)....I will start the Cockatoo with my dust method on a white, light beige or light colored paper and paint the Cockatoo first and then put the background around it. To get the Feathers and shadow detail etc I will put my sharp pastels and trusty shaper to work.
What colors..I have no idea until I get there and experiment with them.

Okay Gaka, fearless teacher and friend, I will try. This will give me a chance to put aside the morning glory I'm constantly failing at and starting over and over. I've never done one of these challenge thingys, so I can't promise, but I'll give it a go. Probably the birdie. Oh, no, what have I done???

OK Gaka - this is what I've needed to make me try my wildlife in pastel! I've painted white cockies in watercolour before, so it will be an interesting challenge. What fabulous pics you have provided. I specially love the preening ones.
I don't suppose you have any black cockatoo photos - I have a commission to do and all my pics are too distant to see real feather detail.
Thanks for inspiring us all
Cheers
Minky
Hi Brooke, it is better to have attempted something and failed, rather than not attempt anything at all. I am sure you will be fine and learn a lot in the process. I'm proud of you:clap:
Hi Minky, I have a program called ThumbsPlus and I convert the color photos to greyscale and then manipulate it with contrast, light etc...If you have probs or can not do it let me know and I will help out.
Thanks for both participating in the project.

Hey Gnu, I liked your bird. It's easy to comment when something is nicely done.
Dawn, yeah, an hour. I've been doing so much reading aabout details and only painting what's important to the whole of the painting so when I finished the Grand Canyon painting, this just fell together. Doesn't that pose just crack you up? Those darn birds can just tie themselves in knots.

well reading your comments Mo..... can see where you are coming from ... I love the effect of the background.... will have to read up on that again :) .... and the bird as you have said the top half is beautiful...... I wonder if you are a bit like me ..... if you have to leave your painting for any time.... find it hard to get the momentum going.... I for sure do ..... glad you enjoyed it and nice to see you in the projects..... its all good practise :) .... lol and theres me not even started yet..... theres a horse in motion one going on too if you are interested ;) ... joined that one as well lolol .... got as much done there too hee hee
I haven't figured out how to get the pictures here to refer to them. But I love what everyone has done. It's really neat to see how each artist's style makes the photo so different. Just love seeing these.
Impete love the name of yours LOL Great job Love that beak Perfecto *S*
Mo I really love the colors in your background. And they way you did the feathers is what I was trying to do LOL But for some reason it wasn't working lol
Gnu you got the feathers the way I wanted them too. Geesh What was I doing wrong?
Sundiver I hate kangeroos now You did a great job on yours. I was having so much trouble with the proportions Those creatures are shaped worse than I am LOL

You've really captured the essence of the bird. They really are very eccentric creatures.
- And you should hear them when there's a whole flock in a tree getting ready to settle down for the night!!!

I sat in the sun, outside, so my eyes would not be affected by the dust again, so nice to have the block of peaceful time,( 1/2 hour, walk, then the hour's worth)
Yes the black was a pencil,, but as they were all on special, together in the tin, I assumed it was straight pastel pencil...perhaps I'll use it with my oil pastels when I break them out!!:D
that means I have to buy some more of the pencils!!. at least I know I can use them OK...
thanks for the comments

You all have done such wonderful work in this month's project! Both cockatoos and kangaroos look outstanding. :D
Every time I look at the cockatoos I get tears in my eyes...I had a beautiful Goffins cockatoo for 16 years, his name was Chicklet. He passed away 2 years ago and I still miss him terribly. If some of you aren't familiar with the cockatoo breed, they are extremely affectionate. Chicklet wanted to spend every waking hour on my shoulder. I think he would have given up eating just to be with a human and get some affection.

Aw, Karen, I truly understand. I had a pair of cockatiels and a conure. I still miss them, especially the conure. People who do not know birds have no idea what fascinating pets they are.
Those of you down under who have the experience of seeing these guys in the wild are so fortunate. I understand they can be loud and destructive, but I would really love to see a whole flock of them!

Mikki....a conure! I have a 20 year old conure named Spotty! :D He's a wonderful bird. Doesn't like to be handled much but loves giving kisses...if you keep your hands away from him! :D
Check out this thread about a not too distant mishap with Spotty and to see some pics of him:

Hi Everyone
Thanks for signing up and participating in this months project.....It is amazing to see all the different styles of Cockatoo paintings. The Cockatoo has certainly inspired artists to face the challenge of painting a subject that at first appears relatively easy...but in fact is very difficult to paint. They are all very well done, great, just brilliant 1mpete, gnu, guilliame, Luvy, Luvy and mo.
Thanks Sundiver for the great "Moonlight Roo's" well I think that they have a lovely moonlight atmosphere, Thanks for trying Luvy, They have bumps and bulges, Legs and Arms everywhere and difficult to get right. Both of your efforts are appreciated
As for me.......Still sharpening those darn Pastels!!!! :D I have selected my subjects and hope to get painting soon, although I might have to do some night work on them or it will be Christmas before I finish them :D

Karen! The adventures of Spotty are just priceless. I'm so sorry for his injury, but what a great job you did cronicling it. My conure was a blue crested conure named Conan. He loved to be right there with me whatever I was doing, but he too did not like to be held. He was such a little clown, I could watch him for hours! I love birds! They are some of God's most fascinating creatures.

Hey Dawn, stop knocking yourself. This is looking great. the expression on the bird looks positively coy. I like the way you've done the subtle shading on those "white" feathers. My only thought is there is a lot of undefined background. Maybe add some detail or crop it out. The bird however is great.

Hi folks,
Have taken some time away from my flower pics to try join in this project. There are so many great paintings already. Boy those white feathers are tough! Have posted my first stage, - it has still a long way to go, but I hope to have it finished tomorrow. I'm having great fun with those cheeky faces.

Minky, this is such a sweet composition and you have done a great job of combining the two separate references to achieve a realistic painting. Can't wait to see what comes next. Good work so far!

Oh WOW!!!. Those feathers are so luminous, Chooky, you say you used pastel and CP's? I received a big box of Karisma CP's for Xmas, not used them yet, please let me know how you combined them with pastel, I'm very interested in the technique you have used.
this is gorgeous.

This is ridiculously detailed with the little hairs (or feathers, whatever emus have on thier heads). Now could you come over and draw the hair on my cats? :D
Fantastic! Love the dark paper too!

Um, yep... hehehe.. that would be me.. there's a word or two for it.. LOL... thanks but I had enough trouble with my last piece which was a stupid dog so ...hmmm dunno about cats at the mo.. trying to draw things without hair or fur or feathers..LOL..
Yep, Greg that black Letramax board is in the matboard section and it is a great black surface to work on. It is acid free I believe.

Oh my apology Gaka....I just now reread your info and just realized that I didnt follow the criteria for the project. I thought it was for all wildlife of Oz...lol so sorry!!! :D Ill fixer right up!
Again sorry for my reckless ignorance;) Just to busy doing to many other things.
Hi Everyone
Thanks for everyone participating and it's interesting to see how many people worked on the Cocktaoos compared to the Kangaroo. Just an outstanding effort by all participants
I drew some Cockatoo's and when I seen most people were doing them, I decided to do a Kangaroo which I have drawn, unfortunately daylight hours are short for me and I do not like to painting under Flourescent lighting. So progress is slow!
No worries Redsy :)

Hey Gaka and everyone, I'm in on this too. I've got two cockatoos in love on my board (Cockatwo?), but I'm stoopid enough not to remember how to post a wip, and I'm kinda afraid of what you might think if I did!!! Silly, I know - but I am. Anyway, I've ordered a set of 60 of Terry's pastels, and I've sworn I'm not doing another thing to the lovebirds until the pastels arrive. Everyone else is doing (or has done) a wonderful job and I'm quite envious.
:) :) :)

Hmmm...Februalry Project...guess I will just try one of the cockatoos on my own.
