These are great. Do you find your doodling in your January journal effecting your WDE images?

wow, very cool. I love how you break them up like that. . . that is a great style you have.

These are great, it's so much fun working out what the different subjects are - it makes my poor old brain struggle joining the split images back together. :D

Rainy and Chris - thank you :) If it helps you could go view the "Images Here!" thread in the AMAE forum for the sources images :)

EP - It's hard to believe, but your WDE sketches keep getting EVEN better and better all the time. What I love best is how you pare everything down to simplify the images, yet at the same time you seem to convey everything.

Nice work!

eyepaint
01-31-2011, 05:21 PM
Michelle, Debby, John, Chris, Rainy, Jackie, and Margo - thank you :)

Margo - I use a Pelikan fountain pen with medium nib and black water-soluble ink. Like so:

poochemio
02-06-2011, 08:21 PM
EP the sketches in boxes intrigues me no end! What a very clever idea. The last bunch are very cool with the lines, I too like the grasshopper but the pooch steals the show!

poochemio
02-06-2011, 08:25 PM
You may have answered this question in another thread already, but do you sit down and draw all of the boxes first and then decide how to fill in or as you go along?

eyepaint
02-06-2011, 09:25 PM
Rainy, Debby, and Margo - thank you. I draw more than nine boxes on a page, knowing I need to draw from 16 or 17 reference images. I then plan my paired boxes to ensure I have 17 unique scenes. Then I just go at it. I try to keep faces into one pane unless I feel I'll do it poorly so then I'll draw it across a break.

EP, what was the impetus for you to begin sketching these images in this style? I had to try a few today just because they intrigue me so much. They look deceptively simple, until you go for a frame! I'm insatiably curious.

eyepaint
02-27-2011, 04:28 PM
Margo, Debby, John, Joan, and Rainy - thank you.

Margo - I believe there was a challenge a few years ago on the WDE to make thumbnails of all the reference images. I put them in boxes due to a challenge on the scavenger hunt a few years ago (Jo or Jamie's idea?). And people said they liked the results. I've been doing them ever since. At first they were helpful for me to get to know the images to determine which one(s) I wanted to paint and/or draw larger. But now they have a life of their own. All directly in ink, no graphite.

JTMB

Another nice group of sketches, EP! Love the number of animals, and the deer are timely for me. We feed birds in the back yard and the bears are coming out of hibernation, so I have to bring in the bird feeders every night, which is a pain. And I'm careful going out to walk the dogs after dark because of the bears, so have been taking a powerful flashlight to make sure no bruin surprises are lurking in the yard. The last few nights when I get to the end of the yard and shine the light across the golf course fairway behind our house, multiple sets of green eyes from the deer stare back at me. Kind of spooky, actually...! :)

Viv - thanks

patk/pezk - thank you. WDE is the "Weekend Drawing Event" (really a create-art-on-the-weekend event) held in the All Media Art Events forum here on WetCanvas (see the link in my signature line). I started doing these in 2009 to get familiar with the 16 reference photos the hosted posted and see which one resonated with me. And I've been doing it every weekend since then!

I like how the lines almost make a mustache on the guys face. I had to go look at the pictures. They produced a nice cooling effect for me. After months of temps in the 3 digits, anything that provokes a cool image is desirable.

EP, do you have any suggestions for trying out this technique? It looks so neat in your sketchbook. Alot of potential paintings for you in your material.
I love looking at them.

Just go for it. Directly in ink. Make boxes on a page and then look at your ref images for the parts that appeal to you and to the size/shape/orientation of your "frame". If it helps, start with your non dominant hand, or with a fat marker. Be prepared that they start out goofy. Then practice practice practice :)
