In the Smithsonian magazine recently (my definition of recent- happening less than two years ago), there was a piece about Renaissance (very early) portraits and the use of profile to express purity and virtue. I'm interested in doing a portrait in this style, but can't find the magazine I'm looking for- any names I should research? Thanks,

Kate

Portraiture has been around since the Renaissance...with a lot of portraiture artists during the time...

Try a search for portrait painters of whatever centrury you are interested in.

Here is a good overall link to get you started.

Yes, it's a huge field- I just wish I could remember the artist's name. Frustrating! But thanks for the link.

Piero della Francesca did 2 famous ones, of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino (Fedrico Montefeltro?)

Also along the lines of portaits in profile, this genre comes to mind. (http://www.mugshots.org/misc/bill-gates.html) :D
