My motivation fleeted. January for me to to just do it. This week I'm doing studies to improve my skills and proportions. Same moleskin 5X7 sketchbook. Today is hands! Any comments more than welcome, and any suggestions for these or ideas for further studies would help as well!!
Thanks! :wave:http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/../Community/images/06-Jan-2011/528411-IMG_3128.JPG (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/../Community/Uploader/upload_image_save2.php#)

That's a lot of hands for such a small page! Looking pretty darned good to me! Kinda wondering about the 3rd line down. It appears to be a right hand but I can't even look at my hand in that pose! One of the fingers seems a little long in that one as well.

Thanks, David! I had a bunch of trouble with that one. I got all of the photo references and structure breakdowns in an anatomy for artists book. More than likely I warped it a bit.

Hands are pretty difficult for me, too, Ed. Which is why I'm trying improve, thanks for your comment!

Good job. I also promised myself to do "parts is parts" in a small journal this month. I love portraits and find I skimp on the hands or hide them. They are so hard to get comfortable with! Look forward to more of your posts.

drawing things repeatedly as studies like that is really helpful esp. in learning to draw from imagination (which is something I can't do well yet!) and your studies look great

That is a different construction method for me, looks useful. Great start with your hands.

Suggestions - do lots more hands, try them from life (using a mirror gives your hands more poses/views). I have a book ready for doing hand studies, maybe your effort will inspire me to start sooner rather than later.

Super job on the hand studies!!! I'm never patient enough to go through the stages like you did. Good start!

What a great practice. Hands are just so tricky for most people. Your studies look great.

Great hand studies, and good subject to study in depth.

These look great! Hands (and noses, and mouths, and ears, and feet, and...) are always a challenge for me. :o

Wow! Great hands! Are you working for a book or drawing them from life or photos, or what?

Very good start for January. I'm always going to do something like this and I always get sidetracked.

Great hand studies.

I looked at that second one and twisted my had around. The length of finger is fine but my knuckles stick out especilly the one in front of the furthest finger. The base of my knuckles continues straight down the back of the hand.

I love the way you have shown the structure you used first and then how you built on it. Your pages are almost like a how-to book.

So it's not much, as I've been pressed for time, but I drew at least 1 hand every day these past few days. I think I'm getting a little more confident, don't mistake confidence for competence though haha!

These are really good! The more you practice drawing one thing the better you get. We did that over in the Artwork from Life Forum a while back. One month we did just hands, one month just eyes. You see such a change in your own drawing that way.
