View Full Version : Rainy's January Mixed Media Journal

01-04-2011, 01:32 AM
Hello. . . this is in Raffine mixed media sketchbook and its got 24 pages and is 5.5 x 8.5 in size. I decided to give myself permission to just have some fun this month -- to let myself PLAY with various media used together and explore. So its pretty much all about exploration and experimentation.

This was done with acrylics, Pigma Micron pen 05, and a pasted in airmail envelope (because of the stripes that went with the zebra theme :) and a stamp from a postcard just kuz its cute! The zebra theme is from Milliande, a women's art community online, and the design of page just was adding on as I went along after painting in my zebra :)

Hey Rainy! That's so cool. Your Zany Zebra is quite exZiting!!!

01-04-2011, 05:07 AM
Very cool zebra Rainy - great start!

That's a great start to your new journal!!! I love the zebra and the vibrant color to make it pop off the page. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Yaaay for fun! Love the stripey 2011 :)

Great start to your new January Journal Rainy. I like the Zebra and the mixed media sounds fun. Can't wait to see more!

01-04-2011, 08:35 PM
Cute zebra. Is this for the art journaling online class you were talking about?

01-04-2011, 11:03 PM
Thank you everyone. . . no, I have not yet gotten the supplies for the Visual Journal class that I had ordered last week from Blick. So I watched the video but have not yet begun on creating that page. I will be doing that one in the Visual Journal sketchbook as soon as I get my stuff.

This one was based on the theme that is going on Milliande website which for that day was "Starting out at the end ...Z for Zebra's" and actually the zebra theme has been carrying through. PM me if you are interested in the link for it.

01-05-2011, 10:36 AM
playing is good! you learn so much from the experiments

01-05-2011, 07:02 PM
Nice start Rainy!

01-06-2011, 01:43 AM
Thank you!

So today I used micron pen and some yellow Yarka watercolor and tried playing with zentangle a little which was fun. . . might do some more. The photo came out blurry though so you can't see the pen lines real well, darn. . . sorry!!

WARNING: Now Entering Zebra Zone!!

01-06-2011, 01:28 PM
neat theme. Great zentangle Zebra and lettering.

The first one is colourful. You are going to have fun this month!.

01-06-2011, 07:24 PM
I really like the zentangle zebra. Fun stuff.

01-06-2011, 09:23 PM
Rainy, love this - your zebra in the airmail envelope looks very vibrant. Looks like you are going to love this month playing with whatever makes you happy. I joined up for the Visual Journal Class too. Have fun! Bonnie

01-07-2011, 05:32 AM
Now this is getting playful. I like!:D

01-07-2011, 08:40 AM
he'd make a nice stuffed toy!

01-07-2011, 11:05 AM
Love the zentangle. It is funny how they gave a great name to something we've been doing for years.

01-07-2011, 11:25 PM
Fun stuff. ... very creative....have fun & keep us posted.

01-08-2011, 01:16 AM
A Zentangle Zebra - what a neat idea. Love your journal so far Rainy!

01-08-2011, 09:21 PM
Wonderful start, and I love the zebras!

01-09-2011, 11:18 AM
Thank you so much everyone! This one is not a zebra and I skipped back several pages before doing this one as there are more zebras to come :)

Did this one last night in ink. . . added some words to it after I took the picture.

01-09-2011, 05:41 PM
Nice sketch. He doesn't look too happy.

01-09-2011, 08:16 PM
Rainy this is such fun! I like doodling with the zentangle patterns too - relaxes the mind huh?! The combination of the black and white with the vibrant yellow is nice too ;)

01-09-2011, 09:34 PM
Here is my visual journal workshop week 1 collage page . . . I'm a bit behind as we are already supposed to be doing week two where we add to it but I just got my gel medium yesterday.

Decided to post this here rather than starting a new thread. All of the pieces of the collage except the word DREAMS are old artwork from my sketchbooks that were photocopied for this project.

01-09-2011, 09:45 PM
Interesting collage. Looking forward to seeing what you are going to do with it for the next bit.

01-10-2011, 05:08 AM
The searcher definitely looks like he is looking for something.:D The collage is interesting, tho' I'm not sure the dog fits as well as the rest (then again, it is titled Dreams). Your book is heading in interesting directions. Looking forward to more of your workshop pages...

01-10-2011, 09:17 AM
Thanks, Debby and Chris. . . well, the items are not really supposed to relate according to the workshop BUT in my mind they did. The dog is the key figure really as the items above are the DOG's dreams. . . tree to wiz on with an extra large bird to chase perched in it and a nice farm house in the background to go run home to across a big flat field :)

01-10-2011, 09:49 AM
looking good - it's so much more interesting to collage your own work, rather than rely on cutouts from magazines as some do :)

01-10-2011, 11:09 AM
silly doggie doodle just playing around last night in bed

"Just look at this headline, 'Economy Going to the Dogs.' I knew the humans couldn't hold out long against such pleading looks and soleful eyes."

01-10-2011, 11:29 AM
Hee hee doggie doodles :) :) :)

01-10-2011, 11:31 AM
Rainy it looks like you are having fun with the journals. Your zebras are great. If you are enjoying the zentangling check out Gaye Smith's page over at that site. What that woman does with Sharpies and bristol paper is just amazing. Keep on with the fun!

01-10-2011, 02:08 PM
Rainy, I love this page! I am really curious how this page will progress  . And I am loving the Milliande pages as well, I love to watch her videos on youtube.

01-10-2011, 05:24 PM
Margo, how do I find her? I tried to google it and could not find anything. . . can you send me a URL maybe on a PM? TY

01-10-2011, 07:04 PM
The dog is the key figure really as the items above are the DOG's dreams. . . tree to wiz on with an extra large bird to chase perched in it

Heh heh, doggy needs are simple and apparently universal - our little dog used to love chasing birds, and still loves to wiz on trees!:D

Your dog and newspaper? made me laff as well!

01-10-2011, 07:32 PM
The dog cartoon is just great! Love it.

01-10-2011, 11:53 PM
Thank you for comments from Debby, Chris.

Here is my week one and week two visual journal side by side so you can see the progression. In this step, we added charcoal, oil pastel, and then a coat of watery gesso on top to unify. I am eager to see what she is going to have us do with it next!

My words sorta got covered up by the gesso but she did say in video we would add more text later so I can refresh it then, I figure.

01-11-2011, 08:36 AM
Rainy, first off, let me say I love your Visual Journal. It looks like you have been working hard adding the charcoal and oil pastel. Now, I bought Mod Podge. Am I going to get the same look as Gesso?

I love your dog cartoon. He is adorable. Keep up the good work.

I want to check out the Milliande pages. Send me the link please when you get it.

Great work here! :)

01-11-2011, 08:38 AM
I meant to tell that Searcher looks like he's headed for prison and not to happy - lol

01-11-2011, 08:51 AM
Thank you! I'm not sure about what Mod Podge is since I do not have that. I used the Liquitex Matte Gel Medium for the first step. And then did use Gesso (Golden brand) in the second step.

01-11-2011, 09:22 AM
This is so interesting!

Rainy - All your journal pages are coming out so good. Love the searcher, but the side by side views of the journal page for the workshop is wonderful. I finally got my journals, but didn't have time yet to start. Maybe later today and when I'm inside during the snowstorm tomorrow.

01-11-2011, 03:57 PM
Love the addition of color. The side by side comparison is brilliant.

01-11-2011, 06:05 PM
This was done in my Raffine sketch for the scavenger hunt and is four of the items (open/closed, round, transparent).

01-11-2011, 07:35 PM
Excellent hunt sketches. What did you sketch with?

01-12-2011, 09:43 AM
more hunt sketches in my raffine

01-12-2011, 11:55 AM
Wonderful sketch work, Rainy! Being a dog and bird person, the doggie dreams page is of course my favorite. :)

01-12-2011, 12:58 PM
Thanks John and Debby.

Debby, the last two are brush pen and koi watercolors. Sorry I neglected to mention.

01-12-2011, 10:09 PM
Very cool effects with the pen and watercolors. Great hunt sketches.

01-14-2011, 07:39 PM
Rainy sorry it took me so long to respond, I forgot I needed to subscribe. Okay go to Milliande's ning site, Gaye Smith is a member there, there is a page with all of the members on it, just type her name in at the box and hit enter, when her picture and name comes up click on that and it will take you to her page, you can go down to her gallery and watch the show, give yourself plenty of time cause my dear Gaye is nothing if not prolific, amazing too I might add. I am fortunate to have some of her pieces and they look just as good in person. Leave a message to her on her page when you go. Oh yeah her avatar is a little kids boot decorated up with a maple leaf, she lives in Saskatchewan.

01-14-2011, 10:10 PM
Thanks, Margo. . . found her. I have been doing some zentangles in my sketchbook. I was not sure if should post them or not. Hm. . .

more scavenger hunt (these were scanned at work in black and white, as I did not have a digital camera there) - brush pen, pencil and watercolor

I love the recent sketches with the watercolors!!! Your shading is so good on them.

01-15-2011, 07:50 PM
Yes, what Joan said about the shading.

Why not post the zentangles? It's in your sketchbook and doodles are perfectly acceptable.

01-15-2011, 07:55 PM
Great Scavenger Hunt sketches, Rainy. Well done, especially the rounding on those fruits. Very strong values and good soft transitions.

01-15-2011, 08:15 PM
thanks Robert, Debby and Joan.

this was for the pen and ink challenge kiwi photo by ellebelle
in raffine sketch (which I really like)

colored pen and a wash after

01-15-2011, 10:19 PM
Rainy all of your sketches are so good! Kudos on the Strathmore pages.! Really like you kiwis. Maybe I should use one of my Raffine books next month, I've been hoarding them. I'm so over the hoarding now tho! You are getting some very nice effects in yours.

01-15-2011, 10:39 PM
I just thought about the zentangles, you should post them in both places if you want to. I just haven't posted a single thing online in a year. I got burned out being an admin on another site and being expected to post my artwork daily. I will again, I keep saying that...and then the sketches mount up every month and then I'm just too lazy to scan or photograph them all. Probably should be an intention of something.

01-16-2011, 07:34 PM
Oh, Margo. . . please do post! I would love to see your work. . . have you posted any of the strathmore ones yet somewhere? I can't watch the video until tomorrow as my internet is too slow so have not begun week three. Thank you Joan, Robert and Debby.

So most of my zentangles and also a bunch of animal sketches in watersoluble graphite are in a different sketchbook than the Raffine so maybe I will do another thread for that book soon. Then I can post all those.

01-16-2011, 07:41 PM
Luscious kiwis. Would love to see your other sketchbook.

01-16-2011, 09:41 PM
Doing some catching up, you have been busy here!

Great hunt/challenge sketches, I especially like the page with the scissors.

01-17-2011, 11:14 PM
Thanks Debby and Chris.

meerkat photo by jon n. for ink challenge

01-17-2011, 11:47 PM
Rainy, so what if you have multiple sketchbooks, is there a hard and fast rule here? I mean really do we need any stinking rules? I regularly sketch in several books, my purse book, my whatever. It is your thread my friend post whatever you have created!

01-18-2011, 09:43 PM
Cute meerkat.

I'm going to echo Margo. Multiple sketchbooks is just fine. You can post all your books in one thread or have a different thread for each one, or some combination thereof.

Joan T
01-19-2011, 11:23 AM
Love the texture in your kiwis and that meercat! I agree with Margo and Debby, post all the sketches together if you don't want to do separate posts for each. I think it is easier that way. I think we all have multiple sketchbooks.

01-19-2011, 02:57 PM
Great stuff, Rainy! The kiwis made me hungry for some...and I don't even like them! The meercat is great as well.

01-19-2011, 09:04 PM
Nice meerkat, not the pose I usually associate with them.

01-19-2011, 10:16 PM
Thanks everyone. . . here are some animals drawings from my Bee sketch done in stabilo pencil with wash. I have way more of these in there and my zentangles. Have to take photos though. Thanks for letting me post them all together.

01-19-2011, 11:01 PM
here are a few of my zentangles. . . I have about six more to scan but will do tomorrow along with the rest of the animals :)

Don't want to post too many and inundate yawl.

Bee pen sketchbook with micron black .01 pen

01-20-2011, 05:59 PM
Cute critters. The zentangles are interesting. I really like the background on the "cat" silhouette.

01-21-2011, 11:29 PM
Thanks, Debby.

Quick sketch today of the bluebird with stabillo pens & wash for the pen and ink challenge (photo by Dave Slaughter)

01-21-2011, 11:37 PM
Rainy, you have been busy. Love the zentangles, your animals are cute too. I really like the bluebird too. He's very vibrant. I like your meerkat too. I think the zentangles are my favorite - so pleasing to the eye and attracting. Great job. Bonnie

01-22-2011, 04:38 PM
Great bird. Awesome job on that barbed wire too.

01-22-2011, 10:21 PM
Okay lets play like there is an echo in here, I'm down with what Debby says. What kind of Stabilo pens and where do you buy them? I haven't been able to find them around here anywhere.

01-23-2011, 09:25 AM
Rainy...I love all your work you've shared with us....the birds are great...glad to see the zentangles....I'm really enjoying working and learning what can be done what can be done withthe tangles...yours are excellent!

01-23-2011, 07:28 PM
More cool work, Rainy. Not sure if the bunny or the bluebird is my favourite out of these new ones!:D

01-23-2011, 07:45 PM
thanks very much everyone. . . here are a few more. . .

these were done today in Raffine sketch while walking dogs at the lake. REALLY quick ones because the dogs were bored and wanted to walk on!

These are a few more in my Bee sketchbook

Another of my zentangles that I just got scanned. Glad you are having fun with them too, Ed! You are motivating me to get mine added!

01-23-2011, 07:57 PM
Hey, very sneaky - I just caught up, and you are posting again!:D

More great sketches.

01-23-2011, 09:06 PM
Thank you, Chris. . . YOU have been very busy in your book this week, too.

here is one last one for tonight. . . this is actually my first zentangle I ever did a while back. Its in my Bee pen sketcher book.

01-23-2011, 09:30 PM
Love all your zentangles :)

01-23-2011, 09:39 PM
Lots of cool sketches going on here! Gotta teach the dogs that you need quiet time too.

01-25-2011, 12:33 AM
My page from the Strathmore workshop

01-25-2011, 12:38 AM
Rainy, I love your Visual Journal. Are you going to do more? I would like to do one on fish. I haven't checked out the other workshops yet. I would love to do zentangles. They look like fun. Great job. Bonnie

01-25-2011, 12:43 AM
Love your journal, and really like the zentangle with the tiny neighborhood of houses in it!

01-25-2011, 12:59 AM
Cool journal page. Like how you pulled it all together to make a whole.

01-25-2011, 01:14 AM
Nice group of sketches, Rainy! You of course know which one is my favorite - the bluebird, of course. :)

01-25-2011, 12:37 PM
Rainy you are way busy here. Strathmore page turned out nice, and you are definitely rockin and rollin with the zens. I'm in awe of your fast progress with them.

01-26-2011, 10:38 AM
fun :)

01-26-2011, 08:57 PM
Great finish with the workshop page. Fun indeed!

01-26-2011, 11:55 PM
Thank you everyone. . . a friend I've known for over 12 years passed away suddenly last weekend and I'm doing a second journal page in honor of her. Don't know if I will post it, but I am using my own recycled artwork just like in the workshop and I think that the process of creating the page and embelishing it in memory of her is being helpful in some way towards coming to terms with her loss. It was such a shock.

Rainy ~

I am so sorry for your loss. I too lost a dear friend a few years ago. It was heartbreaking. I think two year passed before I could think of her or talk about her without crying. Eventually the fun memories replace the grief; you will heal.

I have to say that I truly love your zentangles. The background on the cat zen is truly amazing: the consistency of your design is so perfect.

Carole A

01-27-2011, 08:34 AM
Love your Strathmore journal page, and your zentangles. Both look like they were a lot of fun to do.

01-27-2011, 01:33 PM
I'm so sorry for your loss Rainy. Doing a journal page is a good way to channel your grief, and do a tribute to your friend.

01-27-2011, 01:36 PM

More zentangles. . .
Thanks Margo, Michelle and Carol (sorry for your loss also even though it was a few years back).

01-27-2011, 01:45 PM
We are chasing each other here! Love your house theme in the tangles, and your 3d effects, are you doing pencil shading?

01-27-2011, 02:28 PM
Oh, I should have said. . . sorry, Margo. Using Prismacolor 03 pen (my Micron 01 ran out of ink over a week ago and waiting for my new order to come in!) and a Palomino pencil.

01-27-2011, 03:05 PM
What my friend is a palomino pencil. It's 40 question time, sorry. Insatiably curious would be a very good description of me!

01-27-2011, 07:25 PM
Margo, I PM'd you the URL for those pencils.

Here is another zentange. . . probably you guys are bored with these!!
Sorry. . .

01-27-2011, 07:32 PM
Bored? You're kidding right? I'm entranced keep them coming!

01-27-2011, 10:12 PM
Rainy - I'm sorry for your loss and I am not bored by your lovely zentangles.

01-27-2011, 10:19 PM
Rainy, sorry for your loss. Remember the good times.

The zentangles are great. I may have to try them. They look really interesting. Tho' I'm not so sure I want to spend the money for the official kit.

01-27-2011, 11:46 PM
I don't have an offical kit. . . I didn't really know about those until after I'd started doing them. I heard about zentangles first on Milliande site. So I just started and continue doing them in my bee sketchbook with a micron or prismacolor pen. :) Hope you try it Debby.

Thanks Margo and EP!

Another one I had not posted yet . . .

01-28-2011, 01:11 AM
Oh, and I forgot this one . . . from Scavenger Hunt, this is my dog all curled up with her head tucked in in her doggie crate. The item was 'something from an unusual angle'

01-28-2011, 06:37 PM
Scavenger Hunt
#2 Shiny (metal coffee mug on co-worker's desk)

01-28-2011, 09:01 PM
Cool sketches, all of them. The dog in her crate is great.

01-28-2011, 09:32 PM
Great unusual angle sketch! I'd have thought she was a rabbit the way she's all tucked in. A lot of my friends had as much or more fun without doing the official tangle thing, and are still coming up with their own designs. Quite a few of them started doing a zendala, doing a circle and splitting it with curving lines or other circles set off center and filling them in. I did it both ways before I decided they were driving me mad! I say do whatever makes you happy, as that is supposed to be the point of the exercise in the first place! You are doing amazing pieces Rainy!

01-29-2011, 12:09 AM
Wow, I really love the zentangle pieces! Complex and creative, with a great visual impact.

01-29-2011, 07:58 PM
Thanks Debby, Margo and John!

Margo, the one thing that I have noticed is that the zentangles can be like too much using of the mouse. . . i.e. can make my wrist sore if I work on them too long at a stretch. But they are fun. . . so here is another one from last night. Bee pen notebook.

And I got my Blick order today which includes my Micron pens! YAY!

01-29-2011, 08:45 PM
Like the keyboard on this one.

01-29-2011, 09:37 PM
Ditto what Debby said! Yes the wrist thing is what got me with the zens, that and having an arthritic thumb I ended up with muscle spasms in my hand. I enjoy looking at them, and have several over the top pieces of my friend Gaye's. I sent her a bunch of my abstract/tub ink paintings to zen over that will have to be my contribution to the world of zen. You will be wearing those microns out in no time is my guess! I really like you textile/basketwearve on this piece too!

01-30-2011, 12:18 AM
Thanks Debby and Margo. . . wow, I need to try to find Gaye. I did once and couldn't and then didn't go back again. Here is trying out my new stabilo woody very, very fat pencil. Hard to get good details as I'm not used to how huge it is and couldn't sharpen it since it won't fit . . . not even in crayon sharpener.

01-30-2011, 12:29 AM
Awe he turned out great anyway. I noticed when I saw the boxed set there is a special jumbo huge size sharpener for the Woody's. Won't be able to find my sweet friend Gaye for awhile. She in the hospital to have her knee replaced, just had surgery yesterday. I'll tell her to message you when she is back online, make sure you have your settings to email you when you get a message. I'll let her know you want to chat at her when she is back amongst us.

01-30-2011, 01:18 AM
Marvelous pony with the stabilo woody. You'll have to sharpen it with a knife, carefully.

01-31-2011, 09:12 AM
Sorry to hear your friend is in hospital. Hope she's all better soon, Margo.

Thanks Debby.

Here are three quick dogs I did to compare three black pencils.
Bee Pen Sketchers Journal

Derwent Drawing Ivory Black

Cretacolor Nero

Stabilo All Aquarellable (dry)

01-31-2011, 09:56 AM
Cool pooches Rainy. And the winner is? Which pencil did you prefer out of the whole bunch?

01-31-2011, 05:01 PM
What Margo said. Cool dog sketches. But, after the experiment, which pencil do you prefer?

01-31-2011, 05:34 PM
I like the Derwent Drawing better than the Cretacolor Nero hands down. Much softer and flows on easier. Its also artist grade. . . the Stabilo is a marking, not an artist pencil. But it is watersoluble which I like. Dry, its about midway between the two I'd say.

01-31-2011, 11:06 PM
This is a journal page I began in honor of my friend who passed a few weeks ago. . . her memorial is this coming Saturday and I plan to do the final layer after that final goodbye I think. This is what I have so far.

She loved dogs like me so that is why the big doggie face as they were a big part of her life, too. . . oh and all images are old recycled drawings of mine (photocopies).

01-31-2011, 11:34 PM
Thanks for your assessment of the pencils.

Interesting visuals on your memorial journal page. Looking forward to seeing the finish when you are ready.

01-31-2011, 11:38 PM
What a page Rainy! I think it is a brilliant idea and also that it's a work in progress. It will carry you through the grief and be a fine and fitting tribute to your friend when you are finished.:grouphug:

02-01-2011, 12:21 AM
Great dog sketches! As a dog person, I can identify with your friend - this will be a wonderful tribute.

02-01-2011, 10:23 AM
lunchtime doodle from yesterday at work
dreaming of one day living in country

02-01-2011, 07:12 PM
Lovely sketch. What part of the country are you dreaming about?

02-01-2011, 08:18 PM

Rainy - I'm so sorry to hear you lost your friend. I love that you titled your memorial page for her "Journey" as that is always what a good friendship is about in my opinion. Lovely soft effects. I hope your friendship was lovely and soft as well.

I agree that I am not bored with the Zentangles. Yours are are wonderful! I do love the rooftops pattern. Did you design that one? I've not seen it anywhere online before. I've only done a few so far, but I imagine there are many more in my future.

I also love the little pony. There is something so sweet and vulnerable about him. All of your sketches are neat and what a great variety.

By the way, I saw your note about getting together for the next sketchcrawl. Sounds like fun. I'd love to try it!

What an idyllic little scene. Dreaming of the country, yep I get that one these days. Ditto Debby where do you want to be country wise?

Very cool, Jean!!! I'm not sure when the next sketchcrawl is but I will have to find that out. That will be fun.

Thanks Jean, Margo and Debby and Chris.

I'm not sure about where in the country. . . somewhere affordable and dog friendly

Jean, looks like they are rather about every three months and I can't tell when the next one was. . . they had one in July, then Oct, then Jan. So maybe sometimes in April?

Rainy, I talked to friend Gaye yesterday on the cell. She is still in the hospital but hopes to go home in another day or so. Rather thrilling to actually speak to someone you have been friends with and chatted, but only online. She is still dubious when she will be online again very much. I shall tell her to message you when she returns. In the meantime lots of other major zen doodlers, FluffyJ, Ruth Dailey spring to mind and they will throw endless help, ideas, or encouragement your way.

Rainy - Wonderful animals and zentangles!!! I had a lot of them to catch up on. lol Your journal page to remember and honor your friend is a nice idea. I find doing art comforting, so hopefully it will comfort you. It is coming along well.
