You sure?
not sure how close you want the likeness to the guy in photo.... but he's face appears thinner and longer than yours ..he's fringe comes down lower in photo.... not sure any of that is important in this though - is it?

Hi Mo. This is going to be great. I've just got a feeling.
I do not know if this is supposed to be a likeness. You have a good start on a perfectly fine fellow. but if it's a practice at getting likenesses...The eyes are good and balanced and look like they are surprised just as in the photo. The face on your guy is rounder, the mouth a bit fuller and the shadows going down from the corners of the mouth are too long giving a jowly effect.
All that said...if it's not anyone you know and are trying to paint a likeness of, who cares? The painted face you have is ver well balanced and full of character.

I really no little (nothing is more accurate)of portrait work - looks a great start and expression looks right.
I'm guessing the fingers on his left hand might be the biggest challenge.
My only query - the shape of the jester's left eye is too 'full on'......needs more 3/4 angle?
I am sure this will turn out well - very much looking forward to next posting.
Dave:)

Well Mikki, I'm going to try for a decent likeness if I can, but the ref pic is rather small, and blown up gets a little pixelated, thanks for all the pointers they are much appreciated, I only managed about 2 hours tonight, but hopefully managed to correct some errors. Thanks Mikki. :)
Thanks Dave for your kind comments too! :)
Here's the latest stage, I feel the right eye still needs some work, but I concentrated more on the shape of the face and hat.

Oh wow! Wish I could narrow in on the problems and just make them right like that. This is amazing. I know this piece was going to have greatness! I think the eye is okay now. The rest of the face is for sure.

Mo,
What a delightful subject matter and great piece of WIP. You absolutely have to post this when you finish it. I can't wait to see it completed.
I just dropped in and followed a few of the comments that others have offered. One thing I noticed and I think could really help it be a bit more dramatic, (IMHO) would be to darken the shadows in the face to match the photograph. There is a sense of mystery in dark shapes and you could really introduce some rich colors in there.
Now... that's got to be a bit scary after all the work you've done already, so give it a try in Photoshop if you have it and see what it does. (That's been my method).
The hands are starting out great but re-measure once more. For some reason, I think they are a tad bit too long - I tried to look again and see. Perhaps the thumb comes towards you more and the middle finger is slightly shorter??? Hmm..
Keep it going!!!! Love seeing the WIP.
Barb
Thanks folks, I'm quite excited about this particular piece, but I've hit a stumbling block at the moment, hopefully I'll overcome it.
Barb, thanks for drawing my eyes to the hands, I rechecked and you are correct, the fingers were a tad long, like the idea of rich dark colours in the shadows. :)
Cheers,
Well I scrapped the first WIP of this one, having real problems with the Art spectrum paper, so what did I do? :D :p used the other half of the black Art Spectrum, you'd think I'd learn wouldn't you? But it was the only sheet of black I had, so this is the second attempt and still having probs, but lets hope I'll see it through this time, I think I have a better likeness developing this time. This is two days work about 10 hours total, it's becoming more of a challenge than I thought, so still a loooong way to go.
I have some new pastels coming this week so I'm hoping I'll have more colours to play around with, I'm a bit limited just now.
Critique all you like, all critiques will be taken on board, I need some sound advice on this one. :)
Thanks for looking. :)

Oh, Mo...I liked the other one but his one is a much better likeness. Almost looks like a different technique. I do not see anythig to criticise yet...so far all the proportions look good to me. I'm just wondering how you keep that black paper so clean?

Mo it's great! Have to agree with Mikki - it's truly a greater resemblance. Keep going and I wish you lovely rich reds and maroons. The shoulder blade/back on #1 was fabulous and I think of the potential ahead of you.
Yahoo! Be very proud!!!
Comments: Bring the hair or dark shape that looks like his hair on his right ear down a bit more. I think you can work that area a bit more with some color when you get some in. I see more "shapes". the fingers are fabulous - check the width of the palm of the hand - could it be a bit wide or is it just missing the shadows below it that will shrink it a bit? I think the dark part of the sleeve below the gold insert may be a bit thicker but I'm looking at a dark image so I can't quite tell. How about the cuff - is that a bit wide? Maybe that's why the hand looks so thick?
Hmmm...
that's enough for now. I'm sure you're sick of me. Hope it helps
Barb

Wow!! Thanks everyone, glad you all think the likeness is looking better, Bnoonan, thanks for the pointers, I'm waiting for my newpastels before I continue, so as you say some rich dark luscious res in those shadows, ;) I hope.! Thanks loads.

Ya nasty woman :p .... you trying to bore me to death lolol :D
Well this is as far as I'm going with this baby.. I've been working on this all day, absolutely sick of it now. I had some new Ashby soft pastels delivered today, beautiful set of colours, but not many darks, :( . The pastels are very similar to Rembrandts, so I felt comfortable with them right off. So used them to complete this painting. Think I'll go for something less ambitious next time, this one's been a right pain. :D:p
Comment and critique alll you like, I'm not going to alter a thing !! LOL!:D:D:D.
I know the faults that are there, and they can stay there too! :D :p
