Creating Custom Painting Panels

Making custom panels gives you the liberty of customizing the materials used to paint on, gives you control over the surface quality, and provides you with the opportunity to decide the scale of the piece. Knowing what tools are right for the job, however, is detrimental for lasting results.

Material List
1. Panel/Board the substrate from which to work off of must be a rigid, non-warping surface. Popular surfaces include hard board, MDF, plywood, and other wood based materials.
2. Wood Sealant wood sealers, commonly found at your local home improvement centers, help seal in woods high in acid content. We recommend sealing any non-archival board.
3.PVA Adhesive (polyvinyl acetate) An archival white glue, used to adhere the fabric to the board. Apply the PVA with a paint brush, painting the board as well as the backside of the fabric. Press the fabric down on the board, using a clean, dry brayer to smooth out the surface.
4.Surface Preparation Acrylic Gesso are a water based primer that may be used to ground either oil or acrylic paints. Apply directly to the fabric . Different viscosities (thicknesses) of gesso exist on the market. Heavy bodied gesso, such as our Blick Master Gesso, require one coat, while most gesso require about three coats. For an ultra smooth surface, sand in-between layers.

What media can be used on painting panels?
-Depending on the ground applied, many different types of materials can be used on painting panels, such as encaustics, watercolors, oils, acrylics, scratch art, pastels, stamping, decoupage, and more.
