A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Watercolor ABSTRACT

Project Leader: Nandie
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium Restrictions: Watercolor paints
Subject Restrictions: Abstract Relative
Days open for signups: Always
Grace Period: Unlimited

Are you like me and dying to let loose with your brushes and create something colorful and a little crazy?
Then come with me and lets explore the abstract side of watercolor.
Create something from your own imagination, or base it on a photo from the reference gallery.
Anything goes.... let's have fun!

Mixed media is welcome, as long as it includes watercolors too.

Additional Information can be found
HERE (http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=350)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized,
you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread.
By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Here we go again, guys! (& gals!) The original thread could not be recovered, so we are starting it from scratch again. Please post all you comments to do with this project here from now on!!

Happy painting!:D

I see others have been trying to grapple with the definition of ABSTRACT on another thread, so I though I would add my favorite definition of the word here.

This is short and sweet, and I think, to the point. From Webster's New World Dictionary:

ab'stract "Art not representing things realistically."

In application I think this means an artistic rendering of a house doesn't have to look like a house, a face doesn't have to look like a face (think Picasso - the elements were there, but weirdly placed) a cat doesn't have to look like a cat...... I think it's more the feeling or the essence of the thing that's being represented in abstract, rather than the form, although elements of the form could certainly be there.

If you're still stumped and are wanting to take part in the project but don't know where to begin, I would suggest visiting the Abstract forum here at wetcanvas. I've found lots of wonderful examples and inspiration over there!

Here's a website by an abstract artist who works in Acrylics, but they could sure pass for watercolor..... have a look, I'm sure you'll find more inspiration here:

Lots of dynamic color and action in this painting. Wonderful use of shapes to direct the eye.

I kind of like it with the blue (on the left as I view it) at the bottom and a landscape presentation. Have you tried it that way yet?

And that red! Wow. What is it?

Those thin white lines (power lines, window divisions, etc.) are really your trademark, aren't they? And you say you ,manage to save them without masking?

First I started out with a 9"x12" arches 140 lb sheet of paper and used masking tape (I know, wrong kind of tape, but it was all I had handy!) to mask off some lines. Then I laid in a wash in each area and used the end of my brush to scrape in some designs. I really had nothing in mind for a finished product - I was just playing at this point.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/18-Jan-2003/14007-absWIP1.jpg

After letting the paint dry and removing the tape, I applied more tape in different directions, being careful to try to keep the whole thing asymmetrical - nothing cut evenly in half. I did this about 5 times and each time it was more and more challenging searching for those asymmetrical shapes! Most of the colors I used were primaries, the interesting colors came from layering different colors over each other.

This pic is after the 3rd time masking & painting.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/18-Jan-2003/14007-absWIP2.jpg

This is the final product. It's a little more overworked than I'd like.... the fish were added as an afterthought because I encountered some bleeding of paint under my taped areas so I lost my nice clean lines in places. The effect looked, well, watery, so I worked with that and used acrylics to add details.

It reminds me of my husband's aquarium when the sun suddenly hits it and you see a streak of light and some fish, while the others lurk in darkness.

This is another very attractive piece. These all have a playful feel to them, probably because of the bright splashes of color. Are you enjoying painting them. If so, it is coming through in your creations.

Alan, I think out of all of yours I like this one the best. I see a world, I see people, I see a stairway to heaven, I see fire, sky....

Y'know, You are treading on very thin ice - I'm just about on the verge of not talking to you again - how long did this take? All of half an hour?????

1mpete , well so far I have had fun with these last two but usually they don't come this easy....

And yes Andrea just so you will keep talking to me this one did take over an hour...

THanks all for the nice comments.

Beautiful bright colours Pam, very very striking. Your lines are so straight, you must have a lot of patience to use a ruler etc (you did use a ruler and you're not just a miracle worker right?).

I really like the gay interplay of shapes and bright colors in this painting. It reminds me of Mardi Gras or Carnivale. I especially like the curving, twisting shapes contrasted to the hard edge straight lines.

The two diagonal areas of dark blue set off all the other colors perfectly. Not too sure about the spotlight in the upper left corner though?????

Actually I said water based stains and that it was a tissue section.

The stains color particular proteins in the skin differently. The blue is collagen, the pink is red blood cells, the darker purple dots are a variety of different cells, and the holey area are fat cells. I got the idea to submit this, after staring down a microscope for 5 hours today and getting rather bored in the process. This is at 100X magnification and was captured with a digital camera connected to the microscope. Technically unconventional in regard to watercolors, but they are essentially that. The down side to this, is that this person is terminal with not long to live.

Actually Gnu, I am neither. I am a scientist performing basic research, doing some histology because that is where my interests have wandered. As you may know, the life of a scientist has a very round-about route. I am always learning something new...

I'm not sure whether this would still be accepted as watercolour abstract... used watercolour as the base, then covered with strokes and shades of pastels and lastly added thick poster colours out of the tube, painted with fingers....

looks like mud to me.... lol

I like the different shapes and figures you used in this painting. The swirling lines in the primary colors offset the black shapes on each side of the painting. You left interesting negative spaces between the two black shapes too.

I had a problem viewing it though because the image is so large it overwhelmed my 15" screen, I had to scroll from top to bottom and side to side, so the only whole view I get is the thumbnail. Wish I could have seen a larger image than that.

Watching from the Shadows

Hi all,

Decided to give abstract another try. Painted this yesterday. It is 4.5" x 6.75" in size. On Strathmore 140 lb. coldpress paper, painted with prussian blue, violet, and sap green student grade paints.

I painted this in a horizontal format. Used plastic wrap on the wet washes, threw on salt too but it didn't work. When the washes were dry, I removed the paper, then proceeded to use the shapes left to develop the painting--adding more color here, combining shapes there.

When I finished, I was showing my husband and said "This isn't a painting of anything, it is an abstract." As I turned it around to the vertical, he said "You're wrong, you've painted a cat." Dang, he was right, there was a cat there. Not painted intentionally, but he appeared. Funny thing, these abstracts.

Comments and critiques are invited.

Just wanted to check in and let you all know I am totally gobsmacked by your abstracts...... you are all putting out such amazing works of art!!!

Sorry I havent been around much lately to comment on my own thread.... I have a relative in palliative care and that has been taking up all my time recently. I haven't even had time to paint, do laundry, or anything. Sadly, this will be over soon, but that means I'll be able to get back on here and catch up on all your artwork and make some meaningful comments.

In the meantime, keep up the great work.
