A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: 2003 Challenge 1
Project Leader: jaytee
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

This is the first of four 'Challenges'planned for 2003 and is a development from the Guys v Gals.
'Bets'that were so successful in 2002.

Although the Guys v Gals element will remain......... there will be an open poll/vote after each challenge on which team won that round with an ultimate Cybercup at the end of the year........the challenge is really to yourself !

Why not try something new? A new medium, a new style, paint only part of the image, change the colours of the image..........but only if you want to.........render it straight in your favourite medium if you prefer. Everything, with the exception of pure digital manipulation of the reference photos, is positively encouraged :)
As many entries as you like based on one or more of the references images. When posting your entries please describe the 'Challenge ' involved for you :)

Thanks to :

Pampe for Chinatown
Joe Majury for Oban Distillery
Madmum for Wirral Pub

(I have not enlarged them as they pixelate !)

The poll for the first challenge will be posted in mid April using all entries up to that point. Challenge 2 will be set up, led by the guys, in May.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=348)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Wow, Great painting , like the composition , the eye travels around nicely and back to the Basket man .
Your choice of colours give an excellent evening glow with a good tonal value range,

Help, the ladies are winning already :)

Lulu it is very nice. I see you also are taking liberties with the color on this one. I'm really pushing mine which is way different them my usual photo realistic style. Now, Now ladies, my work is also in progress so don't think that this one entry is any indication of the final result. The men will prevail

Good going, but it must be lonely for you, Rich, none of the other men have had time to paint, they are too busy talking.:o

Win or lose, this IS a challange. I set out to do this whole painting with a sampler kit of watersoluble oils. In the process and in reading some other threads about these paints I discovered that you aren't supposed to use water as a median..DUH...just to wash the brushes with water. The challange is ME! So I came across some difficulty and ended up using some of my normal oils as well. I'm waiting for it to dry but here it is so far...
Critique?....
Now you gentlemen, please be gentleman and I promise to act like a lady.

I'll post where I'm supposed to.

Oh how exciting!! Did you apply to be an extra? I would have.
I was an extra once in California. Paid really good money and it was kind of fun actually.

You live in an absolutely gorgeous place. I told my husband I could never go there because I would never want to come back. How exciting! You must send me some photos.

Didn't live here then Dianne, moved after it was all over:)
They are now taking tours to see where it was made - $50 for 2 hours - and they're coming by the busload too, even though there's not much left lol

Yes, it is a beautiful place. Ivy (wetc member) from Indiana came last February to visit, and MissMouse from New York is coming this February! Great how we make friends from all around the world through this place isn't it?

A big welcome to everyone whos just come on board.........and two great new pieces on display in project galleries from momsyward and d-garden

To clarify a couple of things............

There are TWO uploading options in the project............one for Works in Progress, one for Finished works.............both refer you to this thread for comments........

so, yes , progress images are very welcome....... but please upload them in the right project option, otherwise they will get judged as a finished work in April !!!!!

But, if you want advice on the way through, do feel free to post here and ask for it without uplaoding into the option gallery

End of impartial bit

Thank you. However I need to do some major perspective overhauling. For the record that's another challenge I'm facing. We are supposed to report our challenges right? not just make pretty pictures but let everyone know how hard it is for us to do this right? See, if these men think its such a breeze, than by the rules :D they aren't satisfying the requirements. The trick is the challange...ugh, this is hard. It really is...for me. I can't draw a straight line so perspective is a big challange..and I can't find my ruler either in amongst my unorganized art supplies...maybe today I'll find it.

spelling is also a challange for me challenge for me ???where's my spell checker...ah see, I got it!

I haven't been into this forum for a while; been doing a lot of dry media. (Oh, sorry, fellas, dry media means art materials that aren't wet or liquidy)
This thread's pretty volatile, though..do we need hard hats?
Anyway, we're supposed to be challenging ourselves, right? Not just (snicker) those other fellers. So here's my first challenge:
To make a streetscape
a) in oil pastels
b) without swearing
c) on this piece of fucia pink paper that came in an assortment I got, because I don't know what else to do with it.
d) so the buildings don't look inflatable
Wish me luck, babes!

This is looking wonderful Dianne, great figures - their coats look wet!

I agree the road looks too narrow at the moment, I'm not even sure you need those flowers on the left, why not try painting them out completely? You can always add them somewhere later :)

what do you think? I'm thinking about taking those flowers out on the left and transplanting them somewhere near our family and putting in some more road. There just isn't enough room over there to call it a street. Any comments (constructive only please I'm trying to work.:) )

Dianne

Hi Dianne........

Gorrgous colours in this & lots of movement in the figures. I agree about there needing to be more road ..... it would also need widening near the families feet....... so whether flowers or something else is needed in bottom right Im not sure . you could possibly trim back on pavement my long flower bed too? Also, tiny point, mums head getting a bit lost in the floral display :D

Welcome aboard Ruth............... wonderfully vibrant entry...... love the way the focus is on the colourful flags and the figure just shows up............... do you do a lot of digital painting ? I just got that painting package with my wacom pad, but have only done one Mess-around with it. Wondered if it might comme in useful for planning pics in more conventional media?

Unfortunately, I get this tint when I take the photograph with a digital camera, I would like to be able to post the painting with the true colours but it always comes out with a tint. My studio (that's a laugh) is in the basement but I do use a flash. Maybe I should go outside to take my photographs. I'll try to repost with actual colours.

Thanks for the encouragement Rich and Starsprite and Birchbark. So much detail and I am really taking this very slowly.

The building seems a bit out of proportion with the top half slightly bigger than the bottom or it could be my monitor But a good start.

Birchbark: I have looked at the original photo again and I think I have it pretty close. Perhaps the lower part of the building is hidden by the brick retaining wall. At least I am hoping that is where the problem lies.

Thank you Jaytee!

I just got the Wacom for Christmas, and have been playing with it. I love the Painter paintbrush effects, esp. the smeary ones. I haven't thought about using it for planning paintings, but that's a good idea. Right now, I'm just having too much fun learning how to use it. Kid with new toy! :D

Thanks for all your nice comments y'all!

Yes Gail, you are right..the bottom part of the building is covered by the retaining wall. I have been working on this painting all day..taking a break..it is driving me bonkers! This is the most detailed painting I have ever done before..how about you? :)

Well here it is. My first entry. My first attempt at acrylics. Was fun playing with them. Much loser for me and very exaggerated colors. Done on an 11x14 canvas panel with Windsor and Newton acrylic. My next entry will be back with watercolors. Got a new kolinsky brush and some Daniel Smith watercolors I'm dying to test drive

This is great Marvin! good to see you trying pastels too. When Tag tries them I might give the men another point.
But you are all on minus until Tag fronts up with a nude for Bet3 anyway:D

btw I bet that you are the only one who has painted proper 'words' too:D

A REMINDER:

For those who are forgetful, like me :o

if you want to read the artists' comments that go with their painting........go to the project page, click on View all finished entries/progress entries as appropriate and a list of names will come up............if you click on a name it will show all their images in that category and their own comments on the painting...............

Thanks

Gail...I thnk this is coming along very well. Two small points I notice are to do with the eaves roof lines neither of which look quite right to me in your painting........... if you look closely at the photograph youll see that the left had side, the extension roof line meets the main building a little down the wall and if you extend the right roof line behind the tree and the top of house wall line ( and all the others, come to that:D) it should meet the corner of the house and not stop short as it does now.

Other than that, I think your perspective is spot on :)
