View Full Version : Jackie's 12 Joys of December
12-07-2010, 12:49 AM
For this challenge I am using an A4 sketchbook 110gsm cartridge paper. It is pretty flimsy and not standing up well to water but it will do!
I just received a Dick Blick order yesterday - my set of 72 Inktense pencils and some other stuff, so I had to jump in and use them  Although the paper is struggling I love the colours.
Day 1 is brown Medallion drawing pen with a mix of FaberCastell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils and inktense...
Not the best of scans, you can see the paper has cockled but you get the idea!
Day 2 - Medallion drawing pen with inktense pencils....

Oh WOW, Jackie. I love this book already. The teddies are just adorable and the angel is beautful as a cover/first page combo. . . all those sayings are awesome and the way you laid out both pages. So creative!!

Wow, Jackie, you almost make me want to get excited about Xmas! These are great...
... and I had to look up Medallion pens - I want one of those brown ones, I'll have to start looking!

Delightful work Jackie.
12-07-2010, 02:23 PM
Jackie - Your day 1 is awesome!!! I just love the sketch and the writing around the page. Day 2 is precious....both the teddies and the messages. You are setting a very high bar here!!! Thanks for sharing these.
12-07-2010, 06:32 PM
Oh my! These are so precious. You have such a delightful way of combining words and pictures. I love how you are using the inktense. (I really must add that to my list for Santa.)
Creative, and wonderfully done - as usual!

Great work Jackie! These look awesome!

Jackie, the whimsey in your works just brings a smile and lifts the heart!! I also want to hear how you like the Inktense. Carry on!
12-08-2010, 06:24 PM
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the time taken to reply in this busy month:thumbsup:
I am enjoying the colours of the Inktense, there are some beauties in the 72 set. They are much more vibrant than a lot of watercolour pencils that I would normally use, but I love them for sketchbook doodling and when I get the chance I have some watercolour paper stretched ready to try them on a more polished piece ;)
Day 3 - angel ornaments that I saw on the internet inspired these three. I hope to experiment with different illustration styles over the 12 days :crossfingers: (inktense with the brown medallion pen)
PS I don't mean this challenge to take on a religious theme, but I am currently fascinated with the quotes and information I am finding on angels. I think the main theme I am aiming at with this challenge is to find some beauty and inspiration within my world - and December tends to lead to me to start pondering the "meaning of life" and why are we here sort of stuff. :D
12-08-2010, 08:05 PM
Aw.. . the is so cute. Love the title. You are doing awesome with those inktense. . . I have 24 but I have not used them too much as I have a tendency to use too much water on the waterbrush.
12-08-2010, 10:16 PM
Jackie, these are beautiful! You have a theme with Christmas and angels. Your calligraphy is so spontaneous and elegant, the different styles all connect with the calligraphy and composition and bright holiday colors. Gorgeous three pages. Looking forward to more!
This is something you could publish as a mini-book. I mean that. All those inspirational and seasonal messages would be very popular, each page has both pictures and lovely text.

Jackie, I see you are tackling the easy stuff! :D
Another nice page BTW.
12-09-2010, 12:49 AM
The angel ornaments are wonderful. Looking forward to 4.
Great work on the angels! The inktense pencils really are intense - a little goes a very long way. When you figure out the meaning of life, please share with the group, ok? :)

O Wow. Wonderful.
Love the caligraphy and happiness. The first page is my favourite but all are great.
12-10-2010, 11:07 PM
like your angels, I'm big fan of the feathery winged type..., great job!

12-12-2010, 03:04 PM
Jackie, I really enjoy looking at your work....it's beautiful & playful!
12-12-2010, 06:28 PM
Thanks again all!
Rainy - I don't use a waterbrush - just a normal brush, but I too use too much water at times :D
Robert - thank you - your comments are very inspiring!
Seejay - now I know why they call you the "smart artist"
Debby, Elain, Chuck and EP - thanks - glad they are a hit!
John - the meaning of life how it occurs to me might not match anyone else's idea...... in fact, I'd lay bets on that!
Ed - thanks, that is a lovely compliment :wink2:
Day 4 - I am finding the inktense a bit hit and miss on this paper, but the colours are pleasing me more each time I use them. They can be rather vibrant though so I am trying to use light washes to get to where I think I should be with them :D Today's angels are reflecting how I have been feeling the last few days...... a wee bit tired and sleepy but I am happy how this page turned out. The top right angel could have a lot more work done to it but I am satisfied to leave it here for now.....
12-12-2010, 07:28 PM
Such a soft moment captured. Shh... the angels are sleeping. Lovely, lovely fourth page.
12-12-2010, 09:20 PM
Ha, I'm not silly. :D As my challenge gets easier I have more time to enjoy beautiful pages such as these. I hope you got some sleep too...
12-12-2010, 10:13 PM
the light washes and color work really good, great job!
12-22-2010, 01:28 AM
Day 5 - a jump away for angels for now! "Looking out for Santa!" has 5 favourite critters.......
Inktense on unstretched watercolour paper.
12-22-2010, 02:12 AM
OMGosh that is SO adorable. I love that! what are those critters called. . . meerkat or something like that? Probably wrong, but those are so cute. And the presents too.
12-22-2010, 02:51 AM
great looking holiday image, the meerkats look awesome.. like the Inktense colors too...
12-23-2010, 01:30 AM
Awe...so cute. Great job on the critters and the packages.
12-23-2010, 03:50 AM
Thanks Rainy, Chuck and Debby. Just love meerkats - when I visit the zoo I spend so long watching them!
First time for the Inktense on watercolour paper and they are great colours. Not sure I have them down right just yet, but having fun trying ;)
12-23-2010, 05:54 AM
Ha ha, those meerkats are fantastic, what a great idea!
For some reason it reminded me of last year when I was working in the local renal unit; one of the clients called it meerkat manor - he filled in his hours of dialysis watching us run around I suppose, dealing with whatever popped up.
12-23-2010, 12:20 PM
Oh I love the five meerkats with Santa hats!!!
12-23-2010, 02:47 PM
Gorgeous angels. Beautiful.
Love those meerkats. They always tickle my sense of humour and make me smile. I wonder what they are watching out for from the tops of their pile of pressies?
12-23-2010, 03:53 PM
oh Jackie, I just love all these, especially the four angels, but they are all a dream. Well done on being so imaginative, really looking forward to seeing the rest of your 12...
12-25-2010, 08:24 PM
thanks everyone, hoping you had a "Meery Christmas"
You know, as much as I like birds, I have to admit that meerkats are hard not to totally fall in love with. Wonderfully done!

12-28-2010, 02:24 PM
Jackie - I just love your pages. Awesome trio of angels hanging! Day 4 is so tender and lovely!! Lol I just love Day 5. That would make a great Christmas card.
12-29-2010, 02:19 AM
Thanks everyone, I have started no. 6 but work has beckoned and I am only at a rough stage with it :(
12-29-2010, 07:35 PM
Jackie, I too am terribly behind on this challenge. I have decided to continue on into January until I finish it. Join me?
12-30-2010, 04:34 PM
Not been in here forever, always busy with one thing or another, but had to say "well bad" to this journal Jackie!!
01-03-2011, 09:13 AM
I just love this - it's so creative and the meekrats would be a great Christmas card next year. You spark inspiration with all your creativity! Enjoyed it. Keep up the good work. Bonnie:)
02-03-2011, 12:04 AM
 Thanks Debby, Rachel (take the shame!) and Bonnie. My creativity has been slow since Christmas - with work, doing a commission for someone and then I went on an 11 day vacation. Ah well, decided to show you how far no.6 has gone, don't know that it will get finished or whether to continue with the 12 days....... seeing as it is now February

02-03-2011, 06:17 PM
I have to confess that I did not finish the 12 days challenge either. :o I had every intention of doing so, even sketched out number 6 in pencil. Then, my new Claudia Nice book arrived as did my full set of FC Albrecht Durer pencils. :D Oh well, I did reserve pages in my sketchbook so I can come back to it and it'll all be together. Even if it's next December.
02-04-2011, 02:13 PM
those little girls are so adorable!!
02-05-2011, 12:59 AM
Vivien Debby and Rainy - thanks!
 Debby, I hear you! I don't know why I commit to challenges really? I start off all enthusiastic and then life gets in the way and I lose focus ;)
How are you finding the Albrecht Durer pencils? I love my set. I was lucky enough to win the full set in a lovely wooden box. When I was studying art I had some work selected for a student exhibition and won the prize. I doubt I would ever have paid that sort of money myself so it has been a wonderful windfall, they are fantastic :)
02-05-2011, 07:58 PM
That's why I made the February challenge so open ended. You've got all month and are only in it for a single sketch rather than a whole book or several. :)
I love my Albrecht Durer pencils. I'm using them on the hot press watercolor paper in the sketchbook I made for myself. They go on so smooth I can use them dry. But then, adding water is marvelous too. I actually am getting watercolor results. Maybe not the whole wet in wet thing, but lovely just the same. In fact I'm posting my first attempts today. (Finally got my camera software re-loaded after dealing with a virus on my computer.)
02-05-2011, 09:27 PM
That's good news Debby, I'll look for your post! If you want wet in wet effects, dampen the paper first, use your wet brush to lift the colour from the tip of the pencils and drop it onto the dampened paper. The colour will be very soft and you can manipulate it so it looks like "real" watercolours ;)
02-11-2011, 05:35 AM
Great little chicks, Jackie.
Finished or not, I have enjoyed your challenge. I enthusiastically lose focus all the time.:D
02-11-2011, 05:42 PM
Oh, those chicks are wonderful!!!!!!!
