View Full Version : Elaine Horse journal and december challenge
12-03-2010, 05:14 PM
8 x 5" note book . I'm partway through and save this journal for horses so for the December challenge i will do 12 pages of horses. I will also challenge my self to do each page differently. This one developed from an ATC swap - a rainbow swap. I find ATC's a great way to try new things and techniques.
ink drawing and Caran d'Ache water soluble wax pastels. I love those strong colours.
12-03-2010, 07:30 PM
Pretty rainbow horse.
12-03-2010, 10:01 PM
love the rainbow horse. . . wasn't there one in a cartoon, I think it belonged to Rainbow Bright . . . or maybe that was a unicorn. Anyway, the lines of you horse are great. he looks happy and carefree
12-03-2010, 10:17 PM
That horse has a coat of many colours :)
12-03-2010, 11:37 PM
great job with the pastels and ink... very colorful.:)
Great job on the horse! This fellow positively radiates. :)

Day two and three of the challenge.
Day two is ball point pen, Then I decided it needed somethin more so added CP.
Day 3 - forget the calender saying day 6 - is acryllic and then white and black ink.

Wow! Elain, all three of these are spectacular. You sketch horses the way I sketch cats, they're so familiar that your poses are loose and natural, your anatomy accurate or intuitively adapted without losing identity... they're incredible. I like the rainbow horse. The second one's awesome, it's perfect that you added the colored pencil behind them to pop them forward. The third is fantastic too. You succeeded in making them all so very different!
Looking forward to more, the whole galloping herd!
12-06-2010, 11:26 AM
Great horses! Neat variety of sketch styles and colored grounds. Keep it up!
12-06-2010, 01:52 PM
So cool using different media. Lovely horses all of them.
Don't sweat the date on the 12 days. You've got the whole month of December to work on this. And, if you go by the Christian accounting the 12 days of Christmas are from December 25 to January 6. So, technically, you have till January 6 to get 12 days.
Wonderfully different approaches on each of the equines so far, Elain! Great job.
12-06-2010, 05:20 PM
very cool mixed medium items. . . both are nicely done but the acrylic one is my fav. Will be interesting when you get to 12 horses on one page! COOL explorations. Loving it.
12-06-2010, 05:25 PM
I really like the pen with cp's combo - all are great but I keep looking at that one ;)
12-07-2010, 03:33 AM
These are nice!
12-07-2010, 01:30 PM
Elain - Wonderful colorful horse...like a rainbow! The tones around the horses for day 2 make their bodies really stand out. Great look to the ink and acrylic one. I would have trouble sketching one horse...never mind as many as you're going to have to do.
12-09-2010, 03:23 AM
On the 4th day four fat friends got together to chew the hay.
Ink drawing and walter soluble wax patels.
Nice Elain! Fun choice to use a primarily primary color palette.
12-09-2010, 12:25 PM
Oh that's cool! Love the four fat friends chewing the hay! Awesome. They're so whimsical and yet they're natural for all their exaggeration. Their motions are natural.
Felony, one of the horses my daughter takes care of, is a fattie. All winter my daughter needs to get her out and ride her so that she stays in shape. She's pretty but I've seen her at a point where she was almost as plump as these!
12-09-2010, 07:55 PM
LOL. . . cute four fat friends!!! :) You are really making it a song. . . hm. . . I guess i sorta could with mine. . . Two puppies sleeping, and one Christmas dog. But since that is as far as I've gotten, who know. Nice work!!
12-09-2010, 11:35 PM
Thank you John
Robert I've had many a fat horse that had to be restrained from eating but as an adult learner I never had a pony. Having to exercise them though certainly forces you to get out even in winter.
Rainy, it happened by accident . Funny how a challenge creates creativity. I'm not sure I can keep it going up to 12 :)
12-10-2010, 09:49 PM
Love the chubby horses. And, you'll make it. You have all month.
12-10-2010, 10:00 PM
Very nice looking horses, like the colors you use... A fat horse is a happy horse...:)
12-10-2010, 11:19 PM
Four fine fat friends, a very happy image.

12-20-2010, 03:26 PM

Nice colourful unicorns. What's next, pegasus???:D
LOL. I did toy with the idea but wings are not my thing. Hard enough getting the horses to stay on the page :)
As for the rest you will have to wait and see.
12-23-2010, 02:57 PM
Elain, love your pics so far, my fave is the flying blue horses, mm, or maybe those four fat friends, or, mm....well there ya go, they are all fab, and love yer colour sense too...

a Unicorn Society Meeting. . . way cool! you have such a wonderful imagination and love the colors.
12-23-2010, 11:13 PM
 good stuff!
Nice collection of primary and secondary color unicorns! My wife is a unicorn collector - they are stashed all around the house in various sizes and materials.
12-24-2010, 12:50 AM
The way you change your techniques of doodling the horses is visually stimulating and I love it!
12-27-2010, 08:41 PM
Bit of a slow patch over Christmas with all the visiting and eating.
The winner by a nose is number 7.
12-27-2010, 10:01 PM
Wonderful! I like this one.
12-28-2010, 02:05 PM

8 at the gate. Pencil.
12-31-2010, 11:50 AM
love the acrylic drawing of the race. . . did you gesso the page in the sketchbook first?
very cute horses at the fence, esp. the little guy poking his head through :)
Nice pieces, Elaine! I particularly like movement you conveyed in the sketch of the horse race.
12-31-2010, 01:43 PM
Thank you John and Rainy.
Rainy - I did gesso the page first. I think the sktch would have been better on a smoother finsh paper because I wanted to blurr the images more but then, I use the art journal to try things.
12-31-2010, 05:35 PM
Darling 8. And so true to life to have them all crowding around like that.
01-01-2011, 04:04 AM
at the gate, love it...
01-01-2011, 09:02 PM
race painting very fun! Very Degasish!
01-03-2011, 03:08 AM
Thank you Debby and Scatty Kat.
Degasish! Thank you Poochemio!
Here are nine zebras lazing - so lazy it's taken them a while to get here. I was going to put Santa hats on them but they've missed Christmas.
Gessoed page, then I did the zebras all in white. They looked like ghosts until they got their stripes on (in indian ink).
01-03-2011, 04:48 PM
The zebras are just awesome. Poor guys missing Christmas.
01-03-2011, 05:52 PM
awesome zebras! very nice. . . love it
01-03-2011, 06:53 PM
Wow! Incredible work for a sketchbook! I've tried to do acrylics in a sketchbook....not an easy thing!
01-03-2011, 09:45 PM
Foals for the new year. 10 of the 12 days.
01-03-2011, 11:15 PM
These are all so terrific, each one different and interesting. My fave's are the two in white ink on the brown background, the five flighty fillies, and the lazy zebras. :-)
01-03-2011, 11:59 PM
Darling foals. You're almost done.
01-04-2011, 04:53 AM
More great horsey journal pages, the zebras are especially eye-catchingly excellent.
(Is that too much alliteration?)
01-04-2011, 10:40 AM
These are so great! Just what do horses gab about at their secret meetings? Love the racing sketch...so filled with action. Your pencil sketch of the horses at the gate is so soft and sensitive. I think that's one of my favorites. Wonderful zebras!! So many stripes! The one of the foals is another sensitive looking one. Good work!
01-05-2011, 05:40 AM
Brilliant stuff! I love them all - they are all quirky in their own way. Well done Elain :)
