View Full Version : Debby's 12 days on a budget (Dec 2010 challenge)

12-03-2010, 02:08 PM
Ok, I started this so I guess I'd better participate. I have an idea and hope I can pull it off. This is also the start of the sketchbook I made for myself.

I'm debating if I should add more words such as "What? You can't afford the whole tree?"

I used a yellow water color pencil to put a base color on the pear. After that, it was just colored pencils.

Paper: 140lbs Aquerello Portofino hot press water color paper
Pencils: Prismacolor water color pencil, Prismacolor colored pencils, Colorsoft colored pencils.

Beautiful pear, Debby. . . and nice calligraphy as well.

12-03-2010, 04:55 PM
Great start...and I like your sense of humor.....

I like the paper edges....did you create that or is that just your paper?

12-03-2010, 07:36 PM
Thank you Rainy.

Thanks Ed. Had to have a sense of humor being the daughter of a clown. The paper edges were created by tearing the pages when I created the sketchbook. See here. (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=773431) for how I did that. I folded the paper then tore it with a bone folder.

Well done pear Debby. Nice calligraphy as well.

12-03-2010, 10:16 PM
LOL! Great start!

12-03-2010, 10:27 PM
Great start. Nice shine on the pear. I like how the shadow goes accross both pages

12-03-2010, 11:27 PM
I like your sketchbook and the pear looks great... can't wait to see more! :)

12-04-2010, 01:34 AM
I love the pear and how the shadow crosses over the center, just a very cool theme! Don't add the punch line- let us figure them out, very, very clever.

12-04-2010, 02:16 AM
Nice pear, Debby! And yes, the calligraphy is great...another form of art that I admire but feel too clumsy to try.

12-04-2010, 08:36 AM
 great start - and love the humour too!

Nice writing and good color and texture to the pear!!

12-05-2010, 01:28 AM
Haha, love it! (But where is the partridge? Still nestled in the peartree? *G*)

12-05-2010, 05:37 PM
lovely - and a great idea :)

12-05-2010, 08:38 PM
Thanks everyone for your nice comments.

WYSIWYG, the partridge, like the pear tree didn't make it. :wink2::lol:

The next installment.

Realized after I shot the photo that I didn't date the entry. I'm working on remembering that.

Same sketchbook. Used micron pens and, of course, my poor calligraphy pen (which is having problems with the texture and absorbency of the water color paper.)

12-05-2010, 09:41 PM
Oh I love these little turtles! Did you do this really with them in your hand? Precious.

I'm a turtle nut!

12-06-2010, 12:47 AM
very nice sketch of the turtles....like how you placed them..:)

12-06-2010, 03:00 AM
cute :)

12-06-2010, 08:40 AM
Debby, this is just wonderful! The turtles are so cute!

12-06-2010, 08:44 AM
Debby, this is great! I love the colored pencil pear, it's got beautiful lines and color, the masses are so well balanced. Cool concept with your calligraphy too, your project has a gorgeous unity if you keep up the calligraphy with each entry. Great little turtles too, they're well shaped and even in contour have a lot of dimension and depth. Wow. Keep going!

12-06-2010, 02:09 PM
Diana, this was a photo. I have no pets, unless you count my husband. :wink2::lol::lol:

Thanks everyone. I'm working on number 3.

12-06-2010, 03:38 PM
Great turtles, Debby! Hmmmm...now I know why my wife keeps suggesting that our relationship would improve if I would go spend a week at Cesar Millan's (problem dog) ranch...! :o :wink2:

12-06-2010, 05:15 PM
aw. . . adorable turtles!!!

12-06-2010, 05:16 PM

Husbands do make great pets, and we are easily house-trained.:D

Thank you all, for your enthusiastic responses. I am swamped right now with my business. My business will be shut down from about Christmas till the end of January, I can get back to drawing then. I have the whole of this planned out, but need the time to execute the plan.

12-15-2010, 01:05 AM
Good news you are so busy Debby! That is why you are in business after all ;) Try to get some rest so you are not exhausted by the time Christmas actually comes around though :)

This is a busy time and if your business is busy that is super!!! You can finish this up later.

12-15-2010, 08:12 PM
Great pear and drawing of the turtles.

12-24-2010, 05:26 PM
Thank you Jackie, Joan and Zebby.

I am finally able to get back to this. I still have one more order to fill for New Year's, but am taking a break not only because I need one, but because I need to heal up from taking a fall, slipping on a patch of ice. :o:rolleyes:

So, here we have Day 3.

Day 4 is started. But, I'm going to have to put a wiggle in it to get this done by the end of the month. Fortunately, I will have a quiet weekend, no guests or going anywhere. And, hubby has to work this weekend. So, it'll just be me and the art supplies. :D

12-24-2010, 05:41 PM
Cute chicks! Hope the holiday chocolate season went well for you. I would really love to have the whole weekend to sit down to paint and draw, but we have multiple visits to friends places. I'm going to try to sneak a sketchbook and pencils in with me, but I don't think my spouse will approve of sketching during the visit as socially acceptable, even if I'm sketching the hosts or their house. :o

12-24-2010, 06:03 PM
Nice chicks, Debby.

Sounds like you are having a quiet peaceful time like me, enjoy yourself.

12-27-2010, 05:06 PM
Thanks John. Somehow the weekend slipped through my fingers and I only got part way through the following page. Now, I'm more behinder than ever. :o

Thanks Chris.

For those that don't hunt or possibly birding the following items are called... bird callers (so y'all can get the joke :wink2:)

On to the next one. Thanks for looking.

12-31-2010, 06:56 PM
Nice bird calls, Debby!

Happy New Year!

Thanks for all your lovely comments. I'm afraid I ran out of month before I finished. I have decided to continue the project into January rather than taking on a new challenge. So here it is "December 33rd".

I don't know about elsewhere, but here in the states there are a number of carousel rides that have as an added attraction, pulling brass rings from a chute. Sometimes prizes are given for the person who can grab the most rings on a spin. So... here are 5 brass rings. (A bit cheaper than gold.)

Thanks for looking. :)

Elegant. I'll have to look out next fun fair I go to in order to see if they do that here in the merry-go-rounds.
