View Full Version : Caribbean colours sketchbook

I was away for much of November. I took my sketchbook and my watercolour pencils and water brush with me. The pencils satisfied my craving for colour and the brush satisfied the kinesthetic need to smoosh a brush around.
I used my new Strathmore Visual Journal, 5.5 x 8", 68 pages (if you count the back of the sheets), 90lb. I oriented the sketches in landscape layout (spiral at the top). I sketched first in pencil then in ink and added the wc pencils and wash later. The first half of the sketches were from life and the second half were from photos.

I've been asked if that's me lounging on the beach. No, I drew her from life as I sat in the hammock in the following sketch :)

OH, very cool! Your drawings are a delightful record of your trip. Love them!
And I really admire how you've done the little pen borders around them with the labels.
I have that same book . . . its not the one I'm using right now (using the 140 lb wc) but I do have one of those and its great to see how well it took the water pencils!

Wonderful travel collection- you will enjoy these memories forever. LOVE the view from the hammock. How do you like the paper in your Vis' Journal?
Great sketches, EP! Love the bright colors and tropical feel. You've got me wanting to go on a cruise...and I hate cruises! :)

Love the colours - what a vibrant set of sketches ;)

Robert, Chuck, Candace, John, and Jackie - thank you.
The paper is a bit sandpapery. It absorbed the moisture quickly so I could close the book rather promptly after wetting the wc pencil.

More delightful sketches.

Wonderful sketches of your trip, EP!!!! Thanks for sharing them. The color came out really nice...especially that striped hammok. Someone had these journals at a meeting I went to recently. The wc one seemed to have pretty nice wc paper.

What a delightful journal to look through. Isn't it fun to bring a drawing pad on a vacation? There is no better way to take a vacation!
I've never been to the Carribean, but the lightness of your work brought out the warmth of the sun I think.
Now, go take another vacation ASAP or at least go on day trips or something. You're on to something here.

Debby, Joan, WYSIWYG, Bonnie, thebetty, and Diana - thank you :)
Next few pages. These are sketched from photos I took earlier in the day.

I enjoy your sense of composition. Is that a soldier? How did you find him? I never expected to see a gun in art here. In Puerto Rico no less. It's a surprise. Or am I looking at it wrong?

EP, these are great! I love the entire series. You caught the feel of the Caribbean in all your colors. Tropical sun is unlike any other, it's wonderful and these all made me smile. So very cool that you included the ships and things, everything that you saw... it's very striking and powerful. Your lines are always incredible and your colors rock.

More incredible paintings. I really like the ruins.
Another excellent group of sketches! Your style is so nicely direct and simple, but so effective and enjoyable to see.

Diana - this was a police officer. There were several police officers with serious weapons (AR15?) and a fleet of vehicles. They appeared to head into a sort of poor/down-and-out area. I have 18x zoom on my camera so I took his photo from a distance and sketched it later in the day.
Robert, Debby, and John - thank you

neat sketches. . . I especially like the one of the pier/cabana. like how you used the color of the ocean up also in the cabana covering.

EP - fantastic sketchbook and lovely memories to look back on. Photos are great but I think you will remember more looking at your sketches - to do them you most likely paid much more attention to your surrounds.

Next set. These were from photos - sketched the next day.
