A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: January In Your World - Pastel
Project Leader: 1mpete
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

In the Sacramento Valley of California, USA where I live, January is is a gloomy month of fog and rain. The moisture results in fields and foothills that turn the most vibrant greens, a welcome change from the dry browns of summer. An hour and a half to the East, the Sierra Nevada Mountains are covered in snow with great skiing and winter sports. An hour and a half to the west, the whales have begun their migration down the Pacific coast. The vernal marshes begin to come to life and cattails are everywhere. Winter migratory birds like the Canadian geese return to season with us. It is a time for pruning roses, picking oranges, pursuing indoor hobbies and making hearty stews and soups to chase the winter chill. The end of the month usually brings a warm sunny week we refer to as our Indian Summer.

This month's challenge is to create a painting that depicts January in your world. In my world it is raining; in other places, it is snowing; in yet other places, it is summer. You may choose any subject that reminds you of your January. Paint a landscape, a still life, a floral or even a portrait (in pastel of course). Won't it be fun to see all the different ways members of our forum experience January?

I have posted a few photos from my reference collection to start your thought processes. If you are uninspired by the topic, you may use one of mine or any of the wonderful photos from the WC! Reference Library.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=331)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

LOL Great one....now which day of the week do I portray!
Here in Ohio, we have one day with Snow and the next rain, by the 3rd day its in the 50s! LOL so I may wait a few to see which weather we carry the most this year!:D

Redsy, Ohio is such a beautiful and scenic state I'm really looking forward to your posts.

Glad to see some positive response already. I was afraid this would be too tame after Karen's great project last month. I think I will try a "plein aire" of the creek by my house. If I'm lucky I can get one of the resident egrets to pose among the cattails.

I had a hard time finding the project...apparently its not listed at the top of the Newest Projects...but,

I added some photos in the progress area to let you see how my area 'really looks' this time of the year...and uploaded my latest paintings for 2003! Looking forward to seeing all the other January's around the world!

Well, we're just digging out from another big snowstorm, so guess what I'll be painting! It kept us confined to the house all day yesterday. As soon as the driveway gets cleared we're taking my son back to university an hour from here so I'll have to take some reference pics while the trees are all snow-laden.
BTW, Carly's right, this project isn't listed with the other ones and can only be found from here, as far as I can tell. Perhaps a moderator can put it up with the rest of the projects.....

Mikki actually created the project awhile ago and it has a date on it that moves it down in the project hierachy. Apparently this can't be changed. So, the only way we can access it is from here, or if you go to the list of your own projects in My Projects!(ones you'ved signed up for) it should be at the top of that list.

Sorry everyone...after I volunteered to create the January project I worried that I would forget to do it. So I did it right away, on December 17th to be exact. Karen was able to get the posting delayed but the project date stuck.

Now we know for future months, go ahead and work out your project whenever but do not enter it on WC until the date you want it to appear.

Well, I got busy today and did my entry. The day was really nice and I had a good time painting outside.

BTW: One way we can keep this project in view of others is to keep it going on the list of current entries. Of course you can always find projects by looking at the entire project list, but you have to know what you are looking for. :)

Soooo... what we need to do is make sure that someone post a new entry every day this month! What a challenge. :)

As usual, your colors are dramatic and daring and your great syle takes what could be a very ordinary scene and turns it into a beautiful painting.

Okay, here it is finally. My own entry into the project I started. I was hoping to do a plein aire study of the cattails at the local creek but I don't seem to be getting any daylight time to paint. I still may yet, though.

Anyway, this is a composite based on a sunset picture I took and some reference photos I searched out that had fields with standing water. We get a lot of standing water here in the winter if there isn't a drought going on. The image comes from a glimpse I got driving along the freeway one evening last week of a field with standing water, near dark with this spectacular sunset that reflected in the standing water. Almost like a black light poster.

The tree is a California Live Oak. This tree is native to this valley and has adapted to the environment well. It's growing season is in the winter when there is plenty of moisture. In the hot, dry summer months the tree is dormant so it survives nicely without water. Anyway, it is a hardwood evergreen. Always has leaves. I mention this only because it is unusual to see an oak tree with winter leaves unless you live around here.

I think I've conveyed the essence of the moment which was my point in doing the painting but I don't think the technique is particularly good.

I signed up and have been wondering what to do...what to do...THEN, I saw it. Some really cold birds outside trying to keep warm with no luck (considering that it is about 14 degrees F). So I ran for the digital camera....battery dead. So I ran for the regular camera....no film in it. Found a roll...hoping that they don't move....GOT IT!
Those were the first 2 shots on the roll, only 22 more to take and I can get the film developed. :(

I couldn't see anything in the project area. Maybe it's my computer, but the graphics dont come up. Anyway, I put an entry out there. I wonder what it looks like...

Anyone know if that's been a problem? The only one's I can see are Carly's. (or maybe she just fixed it to be that way :) )

Is that the same Carly from the Yahoo pastelpainters <sp> group? I guess I should have listed you as a referral, since I hadn't heard of Wet Canvas until she mentioned it.

I re-added the project, and the image is there. I dunno if you'll be able to get to it. Sumthin' goin' on with the graphics in the project area these days. I hope they fix it, because whatever it's doing, it's causing all graphics in all websites anywhere to stop loading until I totally close all browser windows.

As a computer geek, even I'm perplexed. The only way I can see the project (using Internet Explorer) is to Right Click on the Link, click on "Copy Shortcut" Open a new Browser, and then paste the Shortcut into the address bar at the top.

The Comment is "If it's January in Philly, then it means' the mummers. Here's a quick (1 hour) drop and slop Mummer from the annual parade. Mostly Cretacolor with some Selenier."

Cheers!

Brrrrrr! Last night on the news, a young lady in New England was asked how she liked all the snow...and she replied....I love the snow, it's the shoveling that I hate".

You certainly have your share of snow to shovel! Wonderful shadows and reflections across the dunes of snow! Thanks for sharing your winter with us!

I like the color of the snow. I moved from Atlanta back to Philly, and loved the snow first time I saw it, not I'm about sick of it!

Wow! This appears sort of like southwest American Indian kachina dancers. Are mummers some sort of "down under" native?

What ever they are, this is a striking painting. Very abstract looking with nice blend of colors and pattern.

Carley - this is really nice. I love the play and vibration of the colors. The distant forest is deep and really sets the stage. Lovely work! How big is this one?

Great job on capturing the 'chilll' in the air! Makes we wish I was back in my old home town of Lake Placid NY!!

The shadows really cast a spell on the whole painting.

You've convinced me to sign up for this project now that I FINALLY finished my PC3 project. I tried to use the Post card 3 project to get going with these great pastels I've had for so long, but the going was soooo slow in pastels that I switched back to watercolors [I am so much more comfortable with watercolors and a real dufas with pastels]. A new years challange I've made to myself is to 'get it on' with these pastels and learn, learn, learn...what a better way than this project?

Thanks guys for setting it up~!:D

In Philadelphia, all of the neighborhoods of South Philly work all year to prepare costimes for the New Year's Parade. Goes back to the Swedes that settled here in the early 1700's. For a quick background, read http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/~mhaggert/project/mummers.html. The Fancies costumes (like the one I've done) are adorned with ostirch feathers.

It's just the thing to do in Philly when it's freezing! http://www.mummers.com

Cheers!

I knew I knew the word lol, but couldnt remember what it meant so I went looking.....

Mummers' Plays have been performed in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland for hundreds of years. They are folk dramas based on the legend of St. George and the Seven Champions of Christendom. They were originally mime or dumb shows (Thus mummers from the Middle English word mum, meaning silent.) -

... this must be where the saying 'Mums the word' came from :D .. other meanings of mummer ... says of wearing a mask

.... St. George's flag is the flag I fly under my signature... the flag of England

.. just thought Id share that :)

Brr! It certainly is cold in your corner of the world in January! I love the colors you used...almost translucent looking. The trees in the distance are especially nice. The only thing I would have changed about the road is to not take it all the way to the edge of the paper before curving it back toward the viewer. It makes a nice entrance into the painting...but sort of makes a side trip to the right before bringing the viewer into the buildings. Great smoke effect, too!

Thanks so much for sharing,
carly

I've never posted a picture before but I just did it for the first time for the "January" project. Everything seemed to go right and I saw a fair facsimile of my pastel painting on the screen, but when I tried to look it up in the projects there was just a little blank square. Lots of other artists' entries were missing, too. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong?

Mikki Petersen

You do not appear to have done anything wrong because the image displays no my monitor. (Lovely painting, ice fishing right? Brrrrr!) A number of people have had problems viewing the images for this project, myself included. Try rebooting your browser. That will usually resolve the issue.

Very cool!
Reminds me of the little houses the fisherman build on the lakes in Michigan to go out and ice fish all winter.
I love all the colors in the snow!
:)

Someone please tell me how to view the artist's detailed descriptions when they post an entry. Can't figure it out!:(

Laura, open the thumbnail through the link (Regarding this: ...) and click on where it says, in this case "Project: January In Your World - Pastel"

Then scroll down to 'Browse the Gallery' and 'Browse the Studio Exhibit'.

I'm sure there's a better way, but that's the most direct from this board.

Cheers!

Well Redsy, your other post has a lot of character, but I like this one much better. This is a beautiful painting. Very wintery. I love covered bridges. There are not many of them out here in CA but there were lots where I lived back east.

Thanks 1mpete:D We have heaps of covered bridges here, every backroad will lead to one or more eventually. I love their character and charm.
I still take my kids to one that was my old swimming hole, has one of those huge ropes that we swing from to bellyflop over the water!!! LOL

I just realized I hadn't posted my swan here in this thread. Here we have lots of ducks & geese who winter over on our playa lakes. These year we have to trumpeter swans at a lake near our house.
Actually this started out to be a practice for the real project but Jan is almost over. lol
The colors are not so dark in the real painting. My monitor & photo program looks so different than they actually post it's hard to get it adjusted.
I don't know how to get that entry ID. I haven't done a project before. I did upload it.
