View Full Version : Rainy's Twelve JOYS of December (Challenge)

11-30-2010, 08:22 PM
Hello everyone. . . for my December Challenge, I will use a theme of twelve things that I enjoy about this month.

I will use a 140 lb Visual Journal sketchbook and probably various media as usual.

Thanks for the challenge, Debby.

Nice sketch book. Looking forward to your entries. You're welcome.

12-01-2010, 09:32 AM
Looking forward to admiring your work, and hearing how your like the Visual Journal. 140 lb. is watercolor paper, right? Do you find it different/better than the other similar journals? Cool cover.

What size is your sketchbook Rainy? Strathmore has a challenge coming up after the new year, with the Visual Journals. You might want to check it out.

it is 5.5 x 8 size wc 140 lb

I've not heard of a challenge but did sign up for some workshops they are having. I will look into it. thanks.

12-02-2010, 12:56 AM
Hey I recognize that cover! I have the same book! I'll post my work from that book shortly and then we can discuss the pros/cons of the surface :)

12-05-2010, 10:30 PM
I am so delayed getting started this month. . . but will be posting tomorrow. Sorry!

I did start working on one today, but no time to finish . . . the quality of paper in this book is quite nice!! Its 140 lb wc paper and seems very much thicker than my pentalic nature sketch was!

12-06-2010, 12:31 AM
Very nice sketchbook, how many pages does it have...?

12-06-2010, 08:48 AM
I'm looking forward to trying one of those journals. Everyone's getting them and I love having 140lb watercolor paper to work with. You don't need to finish your first entry in one day either, just post it when it's done. Looking forward to it!

12-06-2010, 11:23 PM
I think you would like it, Robert.
The uploader is not working for me so attaching. . .

First JOY of December. . .
ONE dog dressed up for the holidays

12-06-2010, 11:51 PM
Aww this is just gorgeous! Would make fantastic Christmas cards Rainy!

12-07-2010, 03:25 AM
A very Joyful image!

12-07-2010, 07:42 AM
Thanks Jackie and Chris. . .
I realized that the pict I took with the flash last night really brightened it and washed out most of the shadows on the body and dark side of the face in the white areas. . . oh well. Sorry. They really are there.

12-07-2010, 09:04 AM
Ok . . . I tired to take a pict without the flash (but since its not daylight yet, I had to put it under an ott light which also washed it out some again but maybe not as much). . . AND at least its not as blurry as the first one. I really need to get better at taking pictures! Sorry.

I'm working on my #2 page since I'm behind now, but won't be able to post that until tonight after work.

Love the Christmas dog!!! Super job! He looks like he can't wait for the holidays.

12-07-2010, 04:40 PM
Rainy, wow! This is fantastic. Beautiful painting, so glad the journal is that good. I know I'll love it when I finally do place a Blick order again. I've got a couple of them in the cart, but they're out of stock right now anyway.

12-07-2010, 04:48 PM
What a great pooch! Well done. I was watching Animal Planet last night, and they had a number of categories of 'world's cutest dog' and 'world's cutest cat'. Of course, the dogs allowed themselves to be dressed up. Funny, they did have a 'kitty with clothes' category...!

12-07-2010, 05:10 PM

Robert, ASW and Jerry's both have them in stock last time I looked and for the same price as Blick.

John, that sounds like it was funny. My dogs don't mind playing dress up at all. . . they are all hams (well, except Tiny, who is special ed, of course.)

12-07-2010, 05:18 PM
Very cute dog. Gorgeous painting.

Some dogs like to be dressed up. Some don't. I had one that would wear a bandana around his neck, in fact he looked forward to it. But, don't put anything else on him. The cat on the other hand, she wouldn't even tolerate a collar.

12-08-2010, 01:57 AM
cute dog.... looks like he is ready for the holidays... great job Rainy!

12-09-2010, 12:34 PM
Thank Chuck and Debby.

Here (FINALLY) is my next one.

Joys of December - TWO Puppies
(pups belong to a friend of mine and she sent me the photo and said it was ok to do this sketch of them)

12-09-2010, 01:27 PM
What a great picture. No wonder you just had to do this one.

12-09-2010, 07:46 PM
Thanks, Elain. . . I noticed after I'd posted this that a few areas were rather hard under chin, etc. So I used water and softened those so I think it is better now. Sometimes I see these things only when I take the photos!

12-09-2010, 11:50 PM
Cute little pups! My two dogs are both in the 'geriatric' category, so I'm at the other end of the spectrum. We'll be in the market for a pup or two in a couple years probably.

12-10-2010, 09:34 AM
Thanks, John. . . mine range in age from 13 years down to my youngest who is about a year and half. . . . with several in between :)

12-10-2010, 09:29 PM
Puppies! So cute. Wonderful for day 2.

12-10-2010, 09:38 PM
Great job with the 2 puppies, they look very comfortable...

12-10-2010, 11:14 PM
The puppies are lovely, a nice result.

12-11-2010, 12:50 AM
Adorable puppies - great job Rainy!

What lovely little paintings - can't wait to see more.

12-11-2010, 03:54 PM
Thank you all . . . WC won't let me upload or attach images :crying: :crying:
But I did DO my third one. . . and it does sound sorta like a song!!!

On the third day of Christmas, my sketchbook gave to me,
Three autumn leaves,
Two sleeping pups,
and a Christmas dog on the settee.

12-11-2010, 09:02 PM
YAY. . . I can attach again. . . so:

On the third day of Christmas, my sketchbook gave to me,

12-11-2010, 09:15 PM
The leaves are such lovely autumn shades. Good job.

12-12-2010, 12:01 AM
Thanks, Debby. . . I forgot to mention that the autumn leaves are Sakura Koi WC and a little colored pencil.

12-12-2010, 12:24 AM
Great leaves, great song....

12-12-2010, 12:29 AM
Great paintings Rainy, like them all but who could resist a Christmas Dog on a Settee! Love him! And your leaves are positively 3d, Wow.

12-12-2010, 02:26 AM
very nice work! :)

12-12-2010, 02:41 AM
wow! those leaves look like they can fall off my monitor, very realistic...great job!

Vivien Maloney
12-12-2010, 01:20 PM
Rainy - Love your Xmas dog and pups! I tried a Xmas hat on my Bloss (so I could sketch her in it) and she was most offended! Your leaf sketch is great too. Will keep checking in to see how your 12 days of Xmas are going.

12-12-2010, 01:46 PM
Great job on the leaves! Nice texture, and modeling - the way you overlapped them really gives a 3D feel.

12-16-2010, 05:49 PM
Thanks Chuck, Viv, John, Jackie, Margo and Chris!

Sorry I am so behind in this challenge. . . mine may go into January. I am not sure what do to for four but took a great photo of five doves in the yard that I am going to use for the fifth one. :)

Can hardly wait for the holiday break from work! Counting the days.

12-16-2010, 09:00 PM
Rainy, you are not the only one who's "behind". I put that in quoted deliberately. We still have half the month to work on this. I've only done 1 and 2 so far. Soon, soon, I can have a break too.

12-19-2010, 11:01 AM
well. . . this was done in the old proart sketch for the scavenger hunt, but it is four items. we live on a grove so we have oranges all the time. . .

And now I can work on my five doves :)

12-19-2010, 04:21 PM
very nice color blending on the oranges, they look ripened to eat:)

12-19-2010, 05:11 PM
Those oranges are a gorgeous colour Rainy! Is that watercolour or inktense? I like the way you have added the darks - makes the orange "pop"!

12-19-2010, 05:53 PM
great start to your december 12, the one of those two pooches stole my heart...

12-19-2010, 07:35 PM
Great oranges. Certainly look better than anything I can find here up north.

12-19-2010, 09:45 PM
Love the poem so far.
great autumn leaves and nice juicy oranges.

Don't worry about being behind because you're not.:)

12-20-2010, 05:10 AM
Wow, Rainy! Just skimmed through the whole thread again. Love the two sleeping puppies. That's an amazing pose, both of them are zonked out and so cute, those legs sticking out, they're fantastic. Beautiful maple leaves and good oranges too, but those two puppies may be your best painting ever. That one ought to go on a greeting card or a poster or something, you should do a high resolution scan and check out Zazzle or CafePress, get some money from your puppy pair.

12-20-2010, 08:38 AM
just catching up - lovely sketches :)

12-20-2010, 12:24 PM
Love the Santa doggie. Cool pile of sleeping pups. Lovely leaves. "I live on a grove of oranges".... sigh... must smell so heavenly :) :) :)

12-20-2010, 03:32 PM
Rainy - Those leaves are gorgeous!!!!!!!! They almost look real! Great job on the oranges...nice texture and color. This journal is coming along really well.

12-20-2010, 08:46 PM
Nice oranges.

12-23-2010, 06:19 PM
Thank you Chris, Joan, EP, vhere, Robert, Elain, Debby, Scatty, Jackie, and Chuck!

Here is my next one, this is also in the proart sketch as I didn't want to do it small enough to fit in the VJ and the proart is bigger. The paper buckled some when I added a wash of background color to try to capture the pretty colors of the sky when I had snapped the photo. . . . sorry about that part.

FIVE doves on a wire . . . background is DS watercolor, birds sakura koi wc box

12-23-2010, 07:23 PM
Don't worry about the paper buckling, that's a beautiful sky. The birds on the wire is a great 5.

12-23-2010, 09:58 PM
Thanks, Debby. . . its kinda interesting that the whole texture of the paper sorta changed after the wash of DS. Kind of looks like rice paper or some sort of homemade paper. I set my wood box of OP on top of the journal for most of the day and its flattened out now. :)

12-23-2010, 10:03 PM
Rainy, your sky is fantastic! Your doves are perfect too. I love their different poses, that's so natural!

12-23-2010, 11:12 PM
Lovely stuff Rainy - your December 12 are turning out to be very cute :)

12-23-2010, 11:59 PM
Nice oranges, and of course wonderful doves! What's the deal with the non-conformist dove on the left, though...? :)

12-24-2010, 02:04 AM
Great doves, Rainy, they really stand out against your colourful sky.

12-27-2010, 08:38 PM
Great doves and I like the composition

Vivien Maloney
12-27-2010, 10:17 PM
Lovely sky and doves. I love the first little dove, facing a different way.

12-28-2010, 01:32 PM
Great job on the doves on the wire!!! Great sky and great compostion!!

12-28-2010, 02:01 PM
love the doves, all five of 'em, perfect for the season. super colours in the bg on this one too...

12-28-2010, 08:34 PM
Thank you all very much!! I am going going to get around to my remaining ones as soon as I can. . . I had great plans to do so during vacation this week but have been taking care of all sorts of odds and ends and then attended Johannes great webinar today!

01-01-2011, 07:08 PM
Hello. . . I did a quick #6 today with pen and sakura box

6 mailboxes (and yep, on of the neighbors mailbox is really pinky/purple. . . they race cars or something and painted it themselves like a car with racing stripes)

Also. . . this is the LAST page in my ProArt Sketchbook and its now FINISHED and can go on the shelf as number seven completed book so far. YAY. I found an old watercolor that I did a long time ago, one of my first attempts at it in the drawer and so I put protective Krylon spay on it and then I pasted it on the front of this book with glue as a decoration. So posting also the cover of my completed ProArt 9 x 12 sketchbook.

01-01-2011, 07:43 PM
Congrats on finishing another sketchbook Rainy!

01-02-2011, 02:15 AM
Well done Rainy, a nice finish to your book.

01-02-2011, 05:25 PM
Congrats on filling a sketchbook.

The 6 mail boxes is delightful. The bright pink box doesn't phase me in the least. You should see some of the mail boxes around here. Pink, chartruse, cow, tractor shaped, horse head shaped, all kinds.

01-02-2011, 10:31 PM
Thank you Debby, Chris and Dave!

That is funny about the mailboxes, Debbie. . . all our ours were white except the one black sheep one until they painted theirs last year.

01-03-2011, 02:55 AM
Great letter boxes and love the story to go with it.
Congratulations on finishing the sketch book!

01-03-2011, 05:50 PM
Thank you, Elain.

Gorgeous cover! Congrats on filling the entire sketchbook.

Joan T
01-04-2011, 10:32 AM
Glad to see you're continuing with this one too. Cute sketch of the mailboxes. I think if I had one like those, I'd have a different color (either purple or turquoise) or paint a design on it. Love the leaf you used for the cover.

01-04-2011, 03:29 PM
Great job, Rainy!
