A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: SND: Visit to Cal's Gallery!
Project Leader: JamieWG
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Sunday-to-Sunday Night Drawing/Painting Event

The SND this week will run from Sunday 12/29-Sunday 1/5, since it's a holiday week and everybody's schedules are different than usual.

This SND will take us on a WetCanvas! field trip to Cal's Gallery. Cal has kindly given us permission to use his site for our Wetcanvas! project. Those of you who have signed up for the Waterfalls project may have visited the site through the link for that project. Many thanks to Sonja for introducing me to Cal's site.

You are free to select any image from any slide show on the site. You could probably spend weeks just trying to make a decision, but remember that you can do several during the course of the week, so don't lose too much time choosing!

To use the photos from Cal's gallery, create a folder on your desktop for the pictures. Go to the site (you can use the link highlighted below) http://calsgallery.com and select one of the many slide shows. Click to start the show. When a photo comes up that you want to consider, immediately right click on it and select "Save Picture As", then save the photo into the folder you created. You have to do it before the slide show goes on to the next photo, otherwise use the back arrow on the slide show screen to return to the previous image and try again. You'll then be able to access the photos you selected right from your desktop folder if you do it this way.

Select your image and then after two hours of work, please post your progress. Whenever you're completely finished (no time limit) post your final image.

Have fun! Let's try to meet in the cafe tonight at 10pm EST to chat about the project and everybody's progress.

Discussion of the project will be in the Drawing Forum.

Jamie

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=337)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Isn't it amazing how you sometimes know, even when something is in its very initial stages, that a piece will be wonderful? That's what I'm feeling about this one.

The project runs for the week....so join in anytime! (In fact, I intentionally left it open, so people can continue to submit their pieces for as long as they'd like.)

Welcome aboard!

Boy oh boy, it was soooo hard to choose a reference! So many gorgeous pics. I think I may have to go do more. I did this little oil sketch for my daughter. The ducks and little kitten stole my heart! 8X10, oil on canvas, 2 hours.

Sorry, everybody. Did a little fix on the kitty, deleted that other image from the project images, and added this one instead. So, now the link doesn't work to the other image, but this one should work.

Everyone has done a nice job on their entries. I find Cal's website truly inspirational. I think the next one I am going to work on is the kitten's and the fish bowl. My kids loved that slide show, hearing the oooos and ahhhs :) They have watched it a few times.

Sonja, my daughter loves to watch the animal slide shows there too! I'll have to look for that one with the kitties and fish. There are so many pics there that no matter how many times I go back, I see photos I didn't see or notice before. 'Can't wait to see what you do!

Hi Jamie, a bas-relief is a low relief thatís a combination of sculpture and drawing . This one is oil base clay stuck on a board and about ľ inch thick at the nose. When Iím finished sculpting, a mold can be made and then casts.

I'm way behind in commenting..battling a computer virus among other things. What a lot of variety we have here: great digital work from scamp and jagoe(is that Lake Louise?), sculpture from Frank, 3-wow- from sonjalee, some beautiful sunsets, adorable duckies...what fun, and thanks, Jamie!

I am so impressed with the detailing and texture here. 'Can't believe this is only 2/3 done. Looks done to me! Looking forward to seeing your final sculpture. (Is that right to call it a sculpture, or is a bas-relief not a sculpture?)

It probably won't look much different but does need some work in the ears, nose and a little overall.
I call it sculpture but there is definitely some drawing involved. Thanks for checking it out and thanks to Cal for the use of the reference pic's.

Gill, is this a new medium for you? It's interesting the way you've rendered the clouds by overlaying shadow-like images on one another. I like the textural feel of this.

Y'know, i don't rightly know. It was called something like mtn tulip. So i figured they were tulips in front of a mountain (as opposed to a mountain named Mount Tulip ;))
I was watching the slide show so raptly, that I didn't notice if there was accompanying text. Foolish me.

he he , thanks Jamie...yeah that's me! textural!! :D
I have only done a couple of other things in watercolour, but used to play with it years ago...not with any great skill I might add...
I actually like doing acrylic in watercolour style, real waterclolour is a challenge, because you never get the whites back...
The tree base looks muddy, and the wc forum people think the palms should be darker...and I'll add a horizon...if I can find it on the ref pic!!!

A great group of finished works in the Gallery Exhibit with a lot of diversity in styles and medium. I thoroughly enjoyed participating in this SND and plan on doing it again. Thank you Jamie for running it and thank you Cal for the use of the reference photos, that is quite a selection.

Raye, that's interesting information that you discovered about the lighthouse! Coming along very nicely. How do you like the Mi Tientes paper compared to Stonehenge for colored pencil work? Do you use the smoother side?

What an excellent start. It looks like this lion's going to have a lot to say! What size is the image? And is Rising Stonehenge the same as Stonehenge?

Jamie

Thanks for your comments, Jamie! My understanding is that other papers have been called Stonehenge, but only Rising Stonehenge is the 'real thing'. Don't know it that's right, but this is a wonderful paper. The size is about 6 x 8 or so.

I emailed Cal to see if the pics on his website are available for commercial purposes (in case I would want to sell a piece from one of them) and he said "not for commercial use", which I suspected because of the number and variety of photos. So this will be just an exercise in drawing and that's enough in itself!

I am always veeeerrrryyy careful about copyright issues and reference photos, so I had to ask.

:)

Thanks again, Jeri

I like the Mi Tientis paper, have used it quite a bit, I have used both sides, depending on what kind of result I want to achieve. It does well with many layers and a light touch, I love the Stonehenge, wish they had a wider selection of colors....

Jeri, thank you for clarifying that issue with Cal. When I asked him for permission to use the pics for our project, he gave the permission and did not make any stipulations at the time, so I appreciate that you followed up on that. Thanks also for the info about Stonehenge vs. Rising Stonehenge.

Raye, thank you for the paper info. So, if Rising Stonehenge were available in the deep blue, you'd have used that instead? Has anybody tried pastel on Stonehenge? I just got a sheet of each color a couple of weeks ago, but haven't tried it yet! Been using Mi Tientes for pastel, but will try it for CP too!

Hi there!

I'm using oils - 8 " x 10" ... i worked some more on it, and tried to make it more "real"... it was not going well, so i've backed off a bit, continuing to pursue the "lauren harris" look (sounds fashionable heehee)

The piece is definitely going to have a cartoon feel to it, but my daughter is fine and happy with that.

i will be sure to post progress, just can't scan it since it's so wet!

Awwww what a shame, though I did think this myself, as on he's site he says these photos are what he has been sent or collected....... one of them I recognised as being on a 'professional' photo/poster site and was surprised he had it - isnt there a thread somewhere that says if you call it a 'study of', it bypasses that clause? - or if its been changed so its unrecognisably the same ??? - just thoughts

Thanks Dawn. I used to have a gorgeous Siberian Husky named (surpirse!) Wolf. Huskies look a lot like wolves because they are closely descended. However they have softer facial features. I think my problem with this was that my old buddy kept bleeding through. Generally I like the painting and my DH loves it. Since I did it for him, that's good enough I guess.

Still would like to get a likeness just once...

I am not sure about the 'study of' but I have always been so careful about copyrights. When I managed a fine art gallery in Wisconsin, it was so disappointing to have artists bring in pieces that I knew were direct copies of photos from books or magazines or copies of other artists' work. When someone uses a photograph for reference, if without permission, there must not be "substantial similarity" between the two. It's a sensitive subject, but if an artist wants to sell his/her artwork, it's important to know the legal aspects.

Dawn, yes this was done with watercolor pencils (Supracolors---my favorites). I've tried lots of different kinds. What did he get you? Usually I do pencil work in Prismacolor, and blend with turpenoid and Q-tips, but sometimes I draw in bed late at night, like last night when I did this. I don't like to have the turp in the bedroom, so I use the watercolor pencils in bed! Still blend with Q-tips, but use water instead of turp. Then I put my details over the top, without blending. (I did blend the tree branches on the right with Q-tips just bit.) To get really saturated color, like on the deer, I dipped the pencil in water, then drew the deer. That gets a lot of color to come off on the page. You may have to dip a couple of times. Let me know how it goes! I'm thinking of trying a piece for the waterfalls project in watercolor pencil.

Blend with the Q-tips dipped in water. You can use brushes, but IMO it doesn't work as well as with the Q-tips. YOu can buy great pointed Q-tips in the cosmetics section at Rite Aid!

Thanks, Jamie & Dark Shades! This is the first completed cp using the Rising Stonehenge and I am hooked!! What a forgiving paper! I had to use the electric eraser for the first time, and was able to cover it ok (I think!)

Anyway, it was a lot of fun. I don't draw quickly, I'm afraid, and since I work full time as a legal secretary, it is hard to grab an hour a day during the week to work on things. Oh, well!

Since I've joined Wet Canvas, I have been more encouraged and inspired to keep at it, though, and I am very grateful to everyone here for their encouragement! Thanks again, Jeri
