From the FAQ:

"The stars represent the tenure of a community member. You earn stars by posting. A star (and a special title) are automatically awarded when you post 50, 100, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 messages.

You can't redeem them for anything - they are just an indication of a member's overall level of posting activity."
