View Full Version : A Confrontation of Dragons (WIP)

(A bit of cross-thread pollination again. Apologies to anyone who's already seen this in Fantasy and SF).

I said elsewhere I would set up a WIP thread for my latest dragon painting so here it is. The idea came from two pen drawings of roaring dragons which I've worked up into a full size painting. I'll post things from the beginning in here and add updates in later posts. Any comments/feedback welcome and cheers in advance for looking.

The two initial drawings that inspired the painting.

Layout sketches for each monster. Only tweaked the righthand one, fixed the wings out to make them more realistic and practical, and moved the tail round in front of the pinnacle of rock. But did a bit more work on the lefthand one. Hid a lot of its body with the wing because I was going for more depth and perspective with it.

A couple of layout sketches showing rough position of dragons and different backgrounds. Decided to go with the second version because I don't want the background taking away from the dragons. They'll be moved around slightly in the final painting because they're not looking in the right places here. Maybe raise the lefthand dragon up a bit and move the righthand one down and to the right a little.

First two progress reports on the actual painting. Using acrylics on A1 board for this. Only got the sky and clouds in so far, and need to tweak the top left corner. The clouds need to slant down more towards the centre of the scene and bring in more perspective.

Next job will be to trace on the lefthand dragon and block it in so I know where to start painting in the mountain. A lot of the background will be hidden behind the monsters so I dont want to paint a detailed background that wont be seen. And I cant afford to waste the paint :).

Apologies for the long list of images in this post. Should have set the thread up sooner.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys, and I'm glad you like what I'm doing. Havent had a chance to paint dragons for quite a while so I'm loving every minute of this :)

Will hopefully have some updates to post in a couple of days.

You have two wonderful gifts....a fertile imagination and the skill to translate that into a visual image. I will be watching this painting develop with great interest.

Wow, thank you Bertschikon. Thats a wonderful compliment. I've always worried and struggled with the translation of my ideas so it's a great thing to know that others think my work is believable. I'm really pleased you like what I'm doing with this one. Here's hoping it turns out the way I see it in my head.

Got a couple of updated images to post. A placement of the lefthand dragon for reference so I know where to paint the background and I got rid of the offending clouds in the top left corner which I'll maybe add back in later depending on how the rest of it goes. Also did some work on the mountains. Not liking the background peak. It's too regular and the yellow isn't working with the colours elsewhere. Too dull. Might need to change it for something a bit more primary in nature. Currently using Indian Yellow which is also a bit too transparent.

Anyway, enough rambling. Again, thanks in advance for looking and any/all comments welcome.

Latest update. Not getting as much done on this as I'd like but I've been away from home for a few days and I've got two other art projects along with three writing projects on the go at the same time. Guess I'll just need to keep plugging away at it and hopefully I'll get the dragons blocked in before Christmas...

I really enjoy watching WIP's, it gives me a better sense of the artist's thought going into a painting. It looks great. Looking forward to more.

Thanks guys. I'm glad you like it.

Did a bit of work on this and managed to get the background reasonably finished. Not sure about the structure/shape of the mountains but I think it works as is, and most of it will be hidden behind the dragons' wings anyway.

Next job - trace on and block in the dragons and foreground rocks. Then I can get to the good bit - actually painting the dragons :)

WOW This is realy looking awesome, Love the depth and distance you have on your mountains! I can't wait to see the dragon come to life.
Very interesting how you complete section by section!

Thanks, Okeekat. And yeah, working in sections just seems to suit me for some reason. I've not really had any formal training so I just found the method that worked for me and ran with it.

Sorry it's taken me so long to update this thread. I've not had much time for this painting and it's almost ground to a halt. Managed to get the dragons blocked in and some initial work done on the top left corner but thats about it. Really only posting an update in the hopes it might galvanise me into working harder on this damn painting!

I need more hours in the day...

Again, comments and suggestions are more than welcome, and apologies for the poor photo. We're snowbound so the light is really intense and white.

How cool is this?

Ech, I seem to be in slow-motion mode with this painting. Just cant seem to work any faster, and with so many other projects on the go, it's really sliding down my list of priorites. Damn!

Thanks for the continued support and encouragememt, everyone, and apologies for taking so long to update this thread!

Anyway, latest stage below. Not too sure about the amount of red in the wings so I might darken that down at some point...

Whatever you do don't let this languish in the realm of the unfinished.... this is waaay too good not to complete.

I love it when people who do WIP "ramble" - I learn a lot more that way. I love the colors and detail in this. Keep it up and thanks for the all the updates and information.

Wow very interesting journey from drawings to painting! Cant wait to see yourmdragons finished

Whatever you do don't let this languish in the realm of the unfinished.... this is waaay too good not to complete.

Thanks, Firehorse, and no worries. Even if it takes me a year I'll finish this sucker. It's just a matter of plugging away and finding the time to work on it. Which I managed to do this last week. Fair enough, it's only a small amount but I figured I'd post an update anyway, and every little section completed brings me that much closer to the end result.

Again, a big thank you to everyone for your continuing support and encouragement. It's amazing to me when all I see of my work is the flaws and things needing fixing, that others enjoy what I do enough to follow this thread. Thanks!

Also, apologies for the poor quality photo - the colours are more muted in reality. Still not happy with the amount of red in the dragons but will have to keep going with it as is and see how it looks once it's finished.

Any and all suggestions are welcome and much appreciated.

02-08-2011, 11:37 AM
Wow, looking good, great update. I like the red in the dragons.

Candra H
02-13-2011, 12:51 PM
Thanks, vmrs. I'm slowly coming round to the red myself. Beginning to think my previous dislike was a result of seeing the terrible photo of it in here. I've posted a better one below thats much closer to the real thing.

I think another couple of sessions and it'll be done. Finally. Apologies for the poor photo above. I wanted to delete it in favour if the latest one but it looks like I cant edit my posts after I've logged out for a while. Damn.

As usual, all comments and suggestions welcome, and I'll try to get more time on the forum for feedback reciprocation at some point. Oh, for more hours in the day...

Well, it's finished. Finally. Still not happy with the amount of red in the dragons but I don't know. Maybe it works for others and I'm just being overly pernickety. Wish I could get a decent photo of it but I guess that'll only happen if I upgrade my camera...
