A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Interpreting the Historical
Project Leader: KarenU
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Welcome to the December 2002 Pastel Forum Art Project, the first of our monthly projects! Whether this is your first time joining a project, or you are a seasoned project participant please join in the fun! The theme for this month's project is, as the name implies, interpreting the historical. Our compositional subject matter will be from a series of photographs that I took while visiting the Filoi Estate this past October.

The Filoli Estate, a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is a wonderous 654 acre property 30 miles south of San Francisco, California. Magnificent gardens are seemingly untouched by the passage of time. A grand Georgian mansion sits amongst these gardens where hundreds of rare flowers, plants and trees flourish. William Bowers Bourn II, the original owner of Filoli, arrrived at the unusual name for his home by combining the first two letters from the key words of his credo: “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.”

<b>Note: Project participants are encouraged to use the reference photos I've included for this project.</b>

For history on the Filoli Estate, please be sure to visit the reference link that I've provided below.

Good luck and I'll be looking forward to seeing your work in the project!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=329)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

I'll give it a go.

It's my first project. Is it the idea that I post some WIP's, studies and the final (if ever...) work?

Great reference photos!

OK! I'm all signed up...wonderful reference photos! What a great place to visit and paint!! Do they allow artists to set up and paint on the premises? Would be a fabulous site for plein air!!

Have chosen three of the references...now to decide on one to start!

Welcome to the project Carly! :D They do allow artists after hours access...I believe it's the third Thursday each month. I haven't attended but plan on doing so this year. The only mediums they don't allow are acrylic and oil.

They also have a couple of art shows each year as well. You should check out the link to their site....it really is a marvelous place.

This looks like fun. I am thinking about signing up and projecting.
It looks like a gorgeous place...if we could find a way to virtually be there that would be grand.

Do it Sandy :D We're waiting for you!!

It is truly a gorgeous place and I promise, in the spring, when all the thousands of flowers are in bloom, to have another visit, take a bunch of photos, and do another project of just the wonderful difference the time of year makes. You wouldn't believe the flowers at this place...in the spring the tulips are to die for! :D

Since this project is for the month of December... I'll make it stay at the top until December is over...then we can put up a new one if someone makes one.

Or.... if y'all think that some might not see this because most are use to just skipping over the sticky posts...then I can unstick it.

What you think? Do you think our activity alone will keep it close to the top as long as we need it?

KarenU

OMG llis you couldn't have lumped my name in with the non- novices!!

I am a complete novice....wait until you see my next progress pic. I promised myself....good, bad or downright ugly I was posting these progress pics.

Apparently someone must have come into my studio this afternoon and worked on my painting because I don't know what the $(%*$ happened to it!

Oh well...live and learn....that's what these projects are all about.

LOL... that has happened to me more than I care to share. I have a bit of help from Cocoa puff... my trusty buddy. I always take my digital pictures of my work by laying my paintings on the floor and turning on the flood lights in the studio. Sometimes I forget, in my excitement, to pick them up and Cocoa loves to walk on them and loves to lay on paper.... OMGoodness... well, you know the rest of the story. :(

Karen... I have learned a great deal from you.... you do really nice work and you are an inspiration to all of us. :)

I think I've said it all in the comments I put in about this progress image. Why is it...(at least for me, don't know about others)....that I can only get 1 acceptable painting out of about 10!

I had a vision of what I wanted to accomplish, I had a plan, things started going wrong, I abandoned the plan, and now I'm in the twilight zone!

Okay...I am looking at the picture I just posted and the real thiing. Boy, the scanned one makes all the light colors become almost iridescent! WEll, not quite but really, I don't know how to fix this so you can really see how it looks.
I think I will play with it in Photoshop or something.
Does anyone else have this problem? I guess you always have to allow for differences since all the monitors show differently as well. It just seems in this case it is making my "progress" seem even stranger than it is. lol!

Gosh, I'm thinking the same thing.... I wish December was longer... I'm right in the middle of planning a party and Christmas and all that... and :) getting ready for the pastel workshop with Alan Flattman in January... Carly and I are going! I ordered new Terry Ludwig pastels today.. can't wait to get new ones. It's like I'm getting ready for school and I get to have all new stuff. :) I'm so excited and this project has just been great! I love getting to see what everyone is doing. It's a blast and everyone is doing so GOOD!

Sandy,

I guess taking my time is my proper procedure. Don't know about the others but I'm busy preparing photograph note cards to sell for christmas gifts. Now if I can only find a market....

Actually it took me one day to figure out how to get the assigned project.

One day to select the subject matter and print out the piece for reference.

A trip to 3 art stores to find paper and pastel sticks I was running out of.

One day to admire what all of you have done.

And finally today to push myself off the computer to actually start the painting.

I guess I will take my time!!!

Have a good day today.

Sandy

When a photographer places their image in the WC! reference image library or as a reference image in the art projects they are giving permission to copy their works. It would be a nice gesture on your part to give credit for the reference work if you plan to sell it.

As far as copying other photographs, well, as long as it is for learning purposes and your pleasure, it's okay. I have a bunch of work on my walls that I enjoy that came from using the reference images given to me by photographers. If you plan to sell works using the photography of others, it would be a good thing to get a formal release.

12-06-2002, 07:00 PM
Thanks all. It is interesting.
I guess my other part of the equation is that there is an art to taking a good photograph. Not just the lighting and stuff but "setting the scene." So maybe I feel as if it is cheating a bit if I used someone else's work. I don't know. I will mull it over.
I do understand that if something is posted here for a project it is open season as it were.
But the issue of working from photos is a sticky one anyhow. Probably best discussed in another thread so we don't take away from peoples' hard work on this project. And there is some terrific stuff going on.

:)

Thank you Karen. And thanks for this great project.

Did I say underpainting? It's really just a wash. I used dark green and red to make a dark wash where the trees were to go, smudged a little brown, yellow and blue here and there. I feel it gives a richness to the final effect of the pastels, even though I cover the paper entirely and pastels are opaque, to me it makes a difference. It also gives a different tooth, but you must beware, dust and smudges don't come off easily. It's not a very forgiving ground.

Sorry for the bad picture. It's a gloomy overcast day and I can't seem to get the colors right from the camera or out of photoshop. I have an artist that I really enjoy...Frances Treanor...who paints in a really whimsical style. That's what I was trying to do with this one.

Nice work AriadneArts. I like the colour combinations in this piece and that mountain in the background. Im enjoying seeing everyones work, its really interesting to see how everyones individuality comes out in their work, and how differently people interpret the same picture.

Nice one. I like the way you have used the papers colour to your advantage. Its one thing that I could never quite get the hang of. I always seem to want to cover every millimetre of paper with pastel. I think I will try not to cover all the paper.

Congratulations!!!!!

I'm going to say $150.00 for the sale price but I have to defer to others in the group.

Phyllis,

I think your version of this view is much more creative than mine. I rate myself okay on technical skill but my eye is too literal. I see what is there and render it, your piece is a very colorful and creative interpretation of the scene. I believe that is far more artistic than what I do. My goal is to someday be brave enough to "create" like you do.

This is my first project. I'm looking at others outside my comfort zone hoping to stretch my scope. Never having studied art, I've never been challenged to "work outside the box" and I think that may be very helpful.

I didnt start painting till August this year... thas another story :))..... until this project.... I would detail and copy exactly or at least try my very best to ....... but then I saw what the artists on this thread were doing... it was like a light coming on :D

I agree wholeheartedly Dawn. I still haven't had that light switch turned on....but I live in hopes. I started painting and drawing for the first time in February 2001 and have been copying my reference pictures ever since....religiously...I seem to be afraid to put anything of me into the picture.:D I suppose it will come in time. The most important factor in all this is that you really enjoy trying.....trying anything you feel like....who knows where it might lead.
Dawn I can't believe you only started this year:D
And Pete....keep up the good work....I like your picture very much:clap:

Dark Shade,

I've only been back at painting since July after a 30 year absence. OMG, 30 years! I'm really struggling to let go of old emotional baggage about being an artist and learning to enjoy this as just "what I do for me".

I joined WC! in October but never came back to look around until last week. This community has been like a lifeboat to a shipwreck victim. I cannot believe the changes in my work in just one week! All because I can see what others are doing and read what they feel about it. We sure are an insecure lot ;-)).

After seeing Llis' interpretation of the same reference work I used, I decided to join some more projects (this was my first). I just posted a new work that took me one hour this morning for the Purple Passion Project. It does not look like my work at all. I posted it as "in progress" but after seeing the post, I think I really like it as is so I'm going to cool it and see how I feel about it a few days from now. My natural inclination is to go back and fuss with it to refine the detail, but I don't think it really needs any more detail.

I just love this place and all of you brave souls traveling the path and willing share an experience.

Pete...... yup, yup, yup :) I too stopped drawing 30years ago  I had always drawn and coloured from a very early age.... and had a place at an Art College until my parents persuaded me that I would be better served to find a 'Proper Job' :crying: ... only time I ever listened to them hee hee. Now its come full circle again...... and I found WC :D .... I feel I have to play catch up and re-learn and learn and make up for all those years ... so Im there with you every step of the way

Wow! Thank you all so much! I've never shown my work to other artists until this week. I feel like I could just walk on water right now. My hubby is going to shoot my computer, I just know it!

Dark Shade - you could be describing my life. All through grade school and high school, I was totally into drawing and painting. In my senior year, I won an art scholarship (1966) but my Dad made me turn it down so it would go to someone who "deserved it" since I was only a girl and would just waste it. So I got married and "wasted it". Wish Dad could see these posts! And see how many women are not wasting it.

This is lovely Slowdown! You have such a light touch, you show the medium to great advantage. If I had any suggestion, it would be to tone down the pines in the background to distance them a little more. As is, they look like they are encroaching on the structure.

Those cattails in the foreground are super.
