A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: SND - CASTLES
Project Leader: baquitania
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Cityscape
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Hail and well met good artisans of yon Wet Canvas!

Welcome to this evening's Art Event...

It's quite simple really, tonight we are drawing moats, turrets, parapets, draw bridges, hilltop views of the Bailey, in short CASTLES!

But as always drawing is not thy only choice, thou mayest choose oils, or pastels, or watercolor or even clay if thou is brave and adventurous...

We ask only of thee to work for 2 measures of the sundial, and post this masterpiece into the Progress or Finals section of yonder Art Project.

And then to most happily join thine fellow WC Members in the Cafe, to "chat" and gorge on "virtual" food and drink...

But enough of this, here is a little explanation of the 5 reference links for tonight:

1)Castles.org is very large, you could click away for days, so don't go to crazy, just try to find something in have an hour and use that for now. Then go back and have fun...

2)A Castle for Rent.com is mostly castles of France, but split into modern, medieval, renaissance, etc, click the title links and you will find some great references...

3)Obershawonline.com covers many Japanese Castles, it's also very extensive, and a great bookmark. But for images, click the Castles tab under the banner and just randomly pick a name. You will find a whole different feel to these castles but they're definitely worth looking at.

4)Caledoniancastles.co.uk... Argh lassie, fein scottish cassels farya arrrrgh... ahem I mean some Great Scottish Castles... click away here, the photos are some of the best!

5)Shirofan.com, in my opinion is the better of the two Japanese Castles, exquisite photos, and very easy to navigate. DON'T miss this one!

Well enjoy, I hope to see you in chat after 10pm EST...

Bobby

PS: For anyone wishing to do a serious piece for sale someday, have a look at this link in our own reference library (thanks Mal for finding this, you will have to copy and paste it though into your browser to open the link below...)

http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/showgallery.php?cat=998&thumb=1&si=castle

You'll find 48 Castles, posted by our own WC members, and should be copyright free to use. What can I say, I hope we come back to this one from time to time, since the project is open ended, and will be open all weekend to sign up.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=315)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Beautiful on black paper....I can see quite a few colours and love em. Perspective is my biggest (or one of my biggest) weakness...this looks pretty good...looks like the building would keep standing! Really great mood!

I love how everyone went soft with pastels... this is really nice gnu, and don't worry about the perspective, these are excersizes anyway... later on, you can go nuts ruling it out and wondering if you got all the windows :D

Thanks for joining tonight

For some reason, this reminds me of a prison, not that I've ever been  ... I was gonna do acrylic tonight, but got lazy, and did an even lazier watercolor... here was my original travesty before I went digital...

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/16-Nov-2002/baq_wc_castle.jpg

And then Mal said, it's not finished, and I said you want me to do more of this? Haven't enough people suffered from my lapse in memory? And she said you got 30 minutes... so I did it, and got this...

Gill, I really like the effect you've achieved here. The white mountain peaks stand out so well, and it's nice and loose. Good sketch! In addition, I think you've inspired me to break out the pastels (Conte crayons) that have been sitting in my drawer, still sealed! Maybe I'll try them out at the next drawing event!

This is lovely, Eileen. I'd be interested to know how you combined the 2 kinds of pastels.

Thanks, SD. I did only the fish in oil pastels--Sennlier gold metallic. After blocking out the fish in the oil pastel, I used pastel pencils for the line details and then I took a very soft (Unison) yellow to highlight the gold. It was an experiment, and I think it worked, although I would have taken my time to get sharper lines if it wasn't an FND.

Dear Digistyle,
Thank you for this comment because it was a big dilemma for me! As I started working the castle, I realized that doing too much could be my biggest mistake. Any color at all on the castle took away from the sunlight hitting the stone. So, I tried to put in only what was absolutely necessary, finding that point between "too much" and "not enough"! I hope I found the balance.

Tina and Ariadne, thank you for the comments. Tina, the reference pic I used, which was from one of the web sites (the one of the Scottish castles), had tons of purples in it, so this was really fun to play with. Since I love to do sunsets, it took enormous willpower for me to _not_ grab one of those castle sunset/silhouettes that I knew I could knock off in an hour or two. This reference gave me the opportunity to play with color like I love to do in sunsets, while actually having to do a background, and a foreground, and the castle inself, in some kind of detail. LOL!

Jamie - I guess I had a bit of a leap start, since I've had the castle I'm doing drawn out on the canvas for a year now :o . I remember well that it took me 3 hours to get it drawn onto the canvas in it's proper porportions. Then after that........it just sat there until Bobbys SND for castles. A perfect push.

Tina, if I had to draw that castle, I'd still be drawing. I need to work a lot on perspective....I really should do another that calls for it. I can understand why you'd spend all that time drawing it and then need to set it aside and wait for a push! Geez, that's a LOT of work.

Tina, have you painted other castles? Are they posted here somewhere?

Eileen,
I really like this piece. The roof ornament and sill have your wonderful detailing offset by those really fluffy looking clouds. There's a very nice sense of space in this piece that I really enjoy.

Well done and have a great day! :)

Hi Malarkey! And thank you! I'll need bi-focals after this.

Hi Jamie :D

I'm using a #1 round, with just a speck of paint on it per each stroke  On the more spacious areas I'm using a #2 and #4 flat bristle. A very slow process!! And, I'll have to wait for it to dry after I get through with the initial painting to come back and tweak some areas. How can you not get hung up on details, such as the ones on this castle???? As a matter of fact, this is the castle that Walt Disney modeled Cinderellas after!! I've done one castle before, but sold it, and I didn't get a picture of it before I sold it. It was when I first started painting: a scottish castle.

Well, back to the brush :D

Tina, are you doing the grays as a grisaille, then going over it with that sandy-yellowish color?

#1 brushes, huh? No wonder you're starting to feel like it's time for bifocals! I use very small brushes a lot too. Somehow it doesn't seem fair to pay so much money for a 000 brush with hardly any hairs on it!

Your update is looking great. Keep 'em coming.

Jamie

Hi Jamie......No, not a grisaille. This castle IS white and gray brick-like stones, and has some yellow-ish sandy columns in it here and there. The tower tops are a blue-grey. It's a beautiful castle, just like in fairy books. The very front entrance is in a reddish brick-like stone, which I think really sets off the whole castle.

Yeah..........the dreaded #1 brush. Itsy bitsy loads of paint here and there. I have everything from a 1 up, but found that this size works best without going over edges here and there. But, I'm getting to where I can use the #2 flat!

Thanks for the encouragement :D. I'm so, so pooped for today!!

Bobby.......Thanks for the push!! Glad you made it open ended

question about the castle project........ it was not really clear on how long we can take to start and complete this project. also, the reference photos are for us to choose and paint one????? i use oils and may take a while to dry, however i can use my crappy digital to take a shot of it when i am finished instead of waiting for it to dry and scan it. This is an exciting project to do. the limit looks to be 16 and more signed up. Help, i am not really understanding the rules of this project.

Hi Pilan. I'll try to help you. You can sign up for the project under "Art Projects" (top left pull down menu, click on Art Projects) or you can go to the beginning of this thread, first post has a link to sign up. Normally, these SND's and FND's (fridays and saturdays) are for two hours, but posting after two hours is still allowed. This particular one is openended, meaning take your time, and is also open to any medium. The instructions will tell you all of this when you click on the project thread.

I'm doing mine in oils too ;)

Hope that helps.

I have this birdeye view of something that should be eye level. Thank you so much Jamie for your undying support on this!! It is a lot of work. Oils take much time and much patience. Found that I needed to go back and refine the shapes in the arches. The symmetry is neccessary here to pull off the overall frontage of the main castle! I've put 5 more hours in to this. This is going to be a long process, and I apologize for that folks. But, if it wasn't for this project........the drawn out canvas would still be sitting in the corner staring at me.

Sorry Bobby for the long drawn out process (but I loves ya man) !!

PS: Sorry for the dark pic! Not good lighting in the house without the flash which leaves little indescrepancies because of light flashing on wet paint.

Tina thank you for asking. I feel a bit embarassed by it but know I needed to jump in and do it right since I committed to the project. I am using oils and painting on canvas pad. I have started painting the mountains first and blocking out some dark areas in the castle and foreground, but not to much because i dont want to loose my sketch lines. I am already sailing high enough in the air with this sketch. Right now the oil is drying and then probably start laying in the castle colors and my thoughts are to blur the edges of the castle and the mountains. I have never done this ON PURPOSE before but will try and see if I can achieve it in oils. I have done this in watercolor/acrylic mixture of a Kansas landscape but not in oil,,,,, :o so i will give it the big ho hum and go for it.
I just got home from an appt. did you finish your painting yet? I will go look now.

Dear Geoff,

Thank you so much for that! That's exactly what my husband said when I gave it to him for his birthday! It made him think of the heather in Scotland.

i must have posted somewhere before but cant find it now  .

anyhow, ahemmm, its been a long time since I posted my sketch and have been working on it off and on. I at first wanted a menacing castle with bats flying around it. Then I changed the mood somewhat. Although I loved the bats flying around idea I then saw a picture of a mountain enclosed in fog. yes, I have been trying my hand at fog and its really hard right now. However, I have somewhat gotten a decent piece of work for a castle with fog. Since I do not have a decent digital camera i have to wait until the painting is dry before I lay it on the scanner. so there you know what happened to my finished work. I will post sometimes next week.
I could use some help on fog too. so you foggy people get ready to help me next week :D

This is really striking. I love the use of color and the detail work in the castle

lol, celestia, forgot all about this!
This SND is an example of the drawing events we used to have- in project format so we wouldn't flood any forums, and using internet sites to find images.

And now- taDA! We have our own forum!
