View Full Version : Wc Lee's Oct Sketchbook Challenge
10-02-2010, 02:46 PM
Finally decided which sketchbook I will use for this, a 5.5 x 8.5 Bienfang wire bound sketchbook that has been sitting in my car for months now unused. Most likely I will not finish the sketchbook within the month and will not even attempt to finish it as it will put unnecessary pressure on myself. But if I do finish it, that would be great and if I don't, well, that would be fine too :)
And for the first page, a subject that I am most familiar with to break the sketchbook in. The paper is quite smooth which is great for graphite, charcoal pencils, and ink (maybe conte crayons too) but not sure anything else.

Great start to your sketchbook. Wonderful head studies!
10-02-2010, 04:09 PM
WC, wonderful head studies to start in on your new sketchbook! It's beautiful. You're so great at portraits that I can't wait to see more. Great relaxed attitude about it - that's a lot of pages to fill, but you might do it if you go on a big sketching spree. And if not, you'll have lots of good sketches! These are gorgeous. Are they from life?
10-02-2010, 04:45 PM
wow, that expression of the woman on the lower left is intriguing
wow. love these portrait sketches
how long do you usually spend on these?
Excellent portrait work! Really, really nice.

 Wonderful portrait sketches!!! What a great way to start your sketchbook. I see your book had 100 pages. I looked through my blank journals and rejected anyone that had that many pages. lol
10-03-2010, 05:09 PM
These are wonderful portrait studies, and I like the look of the sketchbook -never seen that one before- but 100 pages!! brave!
10-03-2010, 09:13 PM
Yay! I always enjoy your portrait work.
10-04-2010, 01:29 PM

A couple more pages, deep ocean marine life has always fascinated me so here is a few sketches of two species of marine fish.
10-05-2010, 09:53 AM
Fish are so cool, and you did a great job on these marine critters!
10-05-2010, 10:16 AM
Oh I LOVE these! Both the style and the subject matter... they are such fascinating fish, you can't look away from them!
Very well done! I love the angler fish; very interesting behavior. A car dealer in this area used that fish (and the image of it) in their ad campaigns for years - 'No Phony Lures'. :)
10-05-2010, 01:00 PM
now these are the kind of portraits I could do!!! An ugly fish! they wouldn't complain if you made them uglier
10-05-2010, 01:16 PM
Nice job on the fish!! They don't have the most attractive faces...which is not your fault. lol
10-05-2010, 04:15 PM
nice sketches and yes, deep sea creatures are fascinating I agree - so alien
10-05-2010, 04:38 PM
cool but scary looking fishes! all those teeth! Nice job drawing them.
love the fish..I remember watching a show on those Angler fish..weird, creepy things..you did them quite well!
10-05-2010, 08:12 PM
faces only a mother could love! I like the angler fish at the bottom it looks like it is coming out of the deep dark depths :)
10-05-2010, 08:21 PM
suddenly I'm thinking of watching Finding Nemo
Great job on the fish :)
10-06-2010, 01:59 AM
Nice job on the guy I would not want to meet while snorkelling.
10-06-2010, 02:05 AM
Great job on the scary Angler fish... like your shading technique...
10-06-2010, 02:09 AM
10-08-2010, 03:44 AM
thanks everyone :)
I really like deep sea marine life, some of the speices with the bio-luminous features are just stunning, nature's living light show.
a quick study just to use up a page  since I lagging behind badly ... 4 pages in 8 days is not getting anywhere close to finishing the sketchbook within the month :D Hopefully, I'll get some sketching in later on ...
the paper in this sketchbook is sooooo smooth (almost like the surface of hot pressed illustration board) making it hard to get the darks without applying a lot of pressure with the graphite and even then, it isn't all that dark.
10-08-2010, 06:21 AM
Nice work! Are you just using an HB pencil or do you have some softer B range? They get quite dark without too much pressure. If the paper has a slight "shine" to it, it feels like the pencil slips or slides over the surface. Maybe for this paper a pen might work better?
10-08-2010, 12:50 PM
a sensitive study though even if the paper is difficult
10-08-2010, 04:57 PM
so soft, beautifully done and a real contrast to the fishes (they are cool!)
10-08-2010, 05:00 PM
beautiful portrait
10-08-2010, 06:20 PM
Jackie: thanks :) the sketch was done with 2B lead and that is usually dark enough on most other papers. Will have to try using 4B and if that don't work then I'll have to find the 6B leads. Pens would definitely work.
Viv: thanks :)
Linda: thanks :)
Rainy: thanks :)
A couple more sketches from digital photos I took earlier in the day.
10-08-2010, 07:20 PM
Your graphite study of the lady is just beautiful! I am also lagging, but who's counting - I'm only on p.5 hee hee;-(
10-08-2010, 07:31 PM
stunning drawings, but I particularly love love love that squirrel :D
10-08-2010, 08:58 PM
Oh, these are wonderful!! They are so well drawn!! I love the duck and the squirrel both!
10-08-2010, 09:07 PM
The critters are marvelous.
10-08-2010, 11:23 PM
Nice sketches! I like the contrast with the darker areas on the duck and the squirrel's pose is so cute :)
You might be struggling with the paper but your sketches are turning out fine!
10-09-2010, 02:29 AM
Your sketches look great, your lines and shading are perfect... can't wait to see more!
10-09-2010, 03:05 AM
Okay, so the Fish themseleves look scary and out of a horror movie, BUT your rendering of them is AMAZING - LOVE THEM!!!!!!
THe Quick Study is BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Amazing Duck and Squirrel, LOVE the subtle shading and suggestive mark-making!!!!!
Gentle Hugs, Stacey:grouphug:

Great swimming duck.
10-09-2010, 04:44 PM
thanks for the comments everyone :)
A quick sketch of Joeanna Portia Arthur at http://joeparthur.blogspot.com before getting ready for work. Need to work on capturing likeness and proportions in a quick sketch .... anyhow, the sketch was done on newsprint that I stuck into the sketchbook :D
10-09-2010, 04:51 PM
good one :) very natural and fresh
10-09-2010, 07:25 PM
She is lovely.
Question. Do you print that lovely font or are you adding it in when you upload the picture?
10-09-2010, 10:04 PM
:) I like your style - leaving in the marks amd not blending is a nice touch, must try to remember it myself!
10-10-2010, 07:10 AM
thanks Viv :)
thanks Debby :) The text is added on with the computer after I scanned it. I normally don't write anything other than the date (if and when I remember to).
thanks Jackie :) hehe more like laziness than a style
an hour and a half sketch .. and still didn't capture the resemblance :(
10-10-2010, 04:59 PM
What a lovely quality you are achieving with your pencils even on difficult paper. The eyes are so alive in the portrait - so well done.
10-10-2010, 06:30 PM
another subtle one :>)
10-10-2010, 06:56 PM
Lovely portrait. Thanks for answering the question on the printing.
10-10-2010, 07:12 PM
Beautiful work on the portrait - so inspiring~
10-10-2010, 07:24 PM
I find it difficult when it comes to getting "resemblances" right - I think it is easy to get the features correct and in the right place but there is a certain "something" that makes us see the personality of a person. Having said that though - not knowing this person, the work as a portrait looks fine with regards to proportions etc :)
I am enjoying your sketches - more please!
10-10-2010, 09:19 PM
I think they're amazing, I hope I get as good on people!
10-11-2010, 12:16 AM
the first one is so soft and lovely figure/gesture. The second is beautiful eyes. . . just stunning. These are great character studies. I often call the figures I draw that. I took a class with a famous pastelist while back who does mainly people and she calls them that. Your interpretation of the person or the feeling of them :) The proportions look great. . . I think they are both really nice.
your quick sketch of Joeanna Portia Arthur is quite beautiful...there is a lovely movement in the line quality that I am particularly drawn to. :)
10-11-2010, 02:42 AM
I don't know who she is, but that is a very nice sketch, I wouldn't worry about resemblance... your technique is spot on.
10-11-2010, 04:27 PM
Wonderful job on the portrait. It looks great to me.
10-12-2010, 03:53 PM
You may not think you captured her look, but what a wonderful portrait! you definitely have talent!
10-12-2010, 11:14 PM
love the portrait and squirrel.
we dont have squirrels here, they look so cute
i am enjoying your sketches very much
10-15-2010, 05:11 AM
