10-01-2010, 11:37 AM
Happy Oct 1st!
Here's the front cover of my sketchbook. And here's the first page. Drawn in Sharpie from trip photos.
10-01-2010, 12:33 PM
EP - Great ink sketches! What are you using for your references?
10-01-2010, 01:48 PM
wow, I love how you divide your pages up EP. Your pen sketches are always wonderful. Are you drawing from imagination?
10-01-2010, 02:01 PM
Joan and Rainy - Thanks! I'm drawing from photos I took on a trip a few years ago. I sketch from the photos displayed on my computer monitor. This group was the view from the Denver airport and then views of Charlotte-Ameilie, St. Thomas, USVI (the town, the fort, the rooster, and the geckos).
10-01-2010, 02:08 PM
Great start to your new sketchbook Ep! Love your pen drawings!
10-01-2010, 04:19 PM
Another great sketchbook! I love that you are using your old photos... I always mean to do that but never get around to it. It'll be like going on holiday again for you!
10-01-2010, 04:47 PM
I LOVE the first page EP. So much in your style and so beautifully done (as usual!)
PS. Have you thought of trying different techniques/styles in this months journal as a challenge to yourself?????? I think you could be suprised at how good they would turn out!!!!!!!
10-01-2010, 08:53 PM
Yay EP! Glad to see you doing this challenge too! I was at Denver airport earlier this year - what a great looking airport that is with the big sails (although not so great when we stepped outside and the melting snow dripped all over us :) ) Being aussies we kinda enjoyed that novelty though! Are you planning to do some colour washes in this sketchbook - love your sense of colour!
Great start, EP! It's always great to see your unique and effective personal style. You are the pen and line guru!
10-01-2010, 11:46 PM
Great start to the challenge. Are you going to continue to use vacation photos for this?
10-01-2010, 11:58 PM
Great sketches EP! I love your trip photos - can't wait for more.
10-02-2010, 01:53 AM
EP, that's a beautiful start! Your pen drawings are inspirational. I like the layout too - different from your usual ones but no less attractive. Gorgeous!
love how you have them gridded out...beautiful pen work :)
10-02-2010, 03:14 AM
10-02-2010, 11:49 AM
EP, great start! I always love seeing the pages in your sketchbooks and I always use your style to remind me that I don't always need to have a ton of detail in my drawings. :) It helps me not stress out so much about sketching and drawing, so thank you for that!:o
10-02-2010, 08:56 PM
Love it!! your grid is always nice!
10-03-2010, 02:48 AM
nice start :) and neat too .... though that could have been 6 pages instead 1 which would have put you ahead of the game :D
10-03-2010, 02:53 AM
totally inspiring, your first page is a delight
10-03-2010, 08:35 AM
Ah, still love this style! Glad to see you chose it for this as well! :)

More great sketches. Like what you were doing with the colored pencils.
10-03-2010, 10:14 PM
Very nice. Love the colored pencils!
It's nice to see the variety of the colored pencils in addition to your signature line work!
10-04-2010, 01:12 AM
EP, these pages are gorgeous. I love both of them. The black and white one is so bold and the color page spectacular.
10-04-2010, 01:37 AM
I like how you used different mediums, great job on those sketches...
10-04-2010, 12:21 PM
ooooooh I like the color you added!
10-04-2010, 01:20 PM
I love the wispy palm tree and the sketches of the people. I have so many old photos that I should do a sketchbook using some of them like you're doing. It's a good idea...maybe for November when I'm indoors more. lol
10-04-2010, 01:30 PM
great drawings, EP. perfect perspective on the house. . . love the banana tree even though not finished!
10-04-2010, 06:25 PM

Very nice work EP! I like the house - great perspective - Also, the palm tree with clouds behind - great movement going on~
I'm liking the colored pencil :)
10-05-2010, 06:09 PM
Thanks, everyone. The coloured pencil takes a loooong time and I'm a quick ink sketcher :)
10-05-2010, 06:55 PM
luckily there is room for all types, and methods EP! Congrats on becoming the new Mod, this doesn't mean you get to slack off on the sketchbook though........

Thanks to John, Debby, and Denyalle :) :) :)
10-10-2010, 12:35 AM
Great pages, I like the work on page 6 especially, the colours are lovely and the scenes you did work well together.
Your pencil portraits really caught my eye too.
10-10-2010, 05:02 AM
Love your color work Ep!
10-10-2010, 05:15 PM
I love what you're doing here EP. Its a whole lesson for me in ways to work, I especially like the really loose watercolour sketches.
10-10-2010, 06:40 PM
I think Debby had it right - no matter the medium your style is there!
What a neat collection of studies in the various media - this will be a great sketchbook to look back on EP.
10-10-2010, 11:38 PM
Linda, Viv, Xina, and Jackie - thank you.
Here's page 9 - sepia fluid acrylics on gesso'ed portions of the page.
I just love your loose style...I'm particularly fond of the crab, the beach with red umbrella, and the sepia people sketches :)
10-11-2010, 01:55 AM
Your sketchbook is looking good, page 8 looks like a nice place to visit.... great job!

Epoh and Chuck - thank you
Here's page 10 of 30. Oil pastels on terra cotta colour fix primer (all gummed up ... must be too old?)
This is supposed to be a Caribbean sunset - ha!
Nice job on the sepia sketches! It's amazing how much value range and expressiveness is possible with a sepia monochrome piece. I've played around with walnut ink a bit, and it gives some fun results.
10-12-2010, 02:42 PM
I really like the color you have added to your drawings. You have a unique style
10-12-2010, 09:56 PM

The sunset is so colorful.
10-15-2010, 04:17 AM

Great seeing you utilizing different mediums. Astounding using a toothpick for the ink work in the last page. Just splendid drawing/paintings.
10-16-2010, 02:22 AM
Hi EP! I agree with Debby - I like seeing you experimenting with different mediums. Your ink sketches are always great, but also among my favorites are the pen and gouache on Page 7 and the Oil Pastel sunset. Lovely colors in that sunset! Nice work.
10-16-2010, 03:08 AM
very nice sketches, that's cool you used toothpick and ink...

wow! so much variety here to look at! love it all....
10-20-2010, 09:56 PM
Gorgeous color pages! You spread out to use a quarter page for each one and then kept changing mediums without losing the intensity of your great line drawings. Wonderful pages!
10-20-2010, 10:12 PM
These are all so great. The one looking up into the fronds of a palm is so cool.
10-20-2010, 10:21 PM
lot of kewl sketches... those color pencils look great, like the texture on the Soybean crayons too.
Another great group of sketches - very nice use of color here!

delightful sketches. . . the sailboat in colored pencil and ink is a fav. Love the curled up doggie and the neat looking up into the palm tree view.
10-21-2010, 08:04 PM
It can't possibly be a crayon unless it smells like Crayola
10-21-2010, 08:10 PM

EP- these are all so nice!!

10-22-2010, 10:53 PM
Love the dogs and the swim flippers!
10-23-2010, 01:33 AM
Great charcoal sketches and swim flippers, but the canine mooch is stellar. That series is fantastic! Wonderful animal art!
10-23-2010, 05:02 PM
Awesome. These are wonderful.
10-25-2010, 08:54 PM
Mooching - perfect terminology for a dog! I like all the work but I particularly like the violet/purple that you use in the shadows - it really makes the sketch come alive ;)
10-25-2010, 10:23 PM
Dogs are consummate moochers!! I should know -- I can't sit down with a scrap of food without being surrounded by em :)
10-26-2010, 03:10 PM
Love the doggie...he mooched so much he needed to nap! Great sketches.
Nice work since I last checked in, EP! The charcoal sketches are great! I like working in charcoal but don't do it much because of the challenge of keeping it neat, especially in a sketchbook that gets used frequently.
10-27-2010, 10:07 PM
Great sketches since I last visited Ep! Love the mooching dogs and the charcoal sketches. You handle all mediums very well!
10-29-2010, 07:01 PM

Great coral textures and sand bar scenes. Good proportion and perspective on that boat, that's tricky! Your style continues to evolve in color and your clean pen lines are gorgeous.
10-31-2010, 01:45 AM
Jackie, Rainy, and Robert - thank you. I've got page 27 and 28 done and ready to photograph in the daylight tomorrow. And a good start on page 29. These last two pages might be a tad sloppy given the deadline :)
Edited: I had to edit my page list. I had an off-by-one error. I'm sure nobody would notice if I skipped a page - hee hee :)
Great sketches, EP! The cactus and lizard pages are superb - really love them!
10-31-2010, 12:27 PM

Gorgeous houses and great costumed folks! Well, I don't know if the first two guys are in costume but the other three are. Beautiful Pitt pen rendering. I love using those when I want fast bold effects. Very cool combination with colored pencils, your loose fills are bold yet lively.
10-31-2010, 04:33 PM
