View Full Version : Rachel's "October Days" Challenge
10-01-2010, 12:28 PM
Joining in! I am using this sketchbook:
It has 100 pages, but a couple were ripped out from old sketches I did last year something, nothing worth staying in. :) So just like about 95 pages left.
The medium I decided to use are the Faber Castell's Pitt pens - 6 shades of Grey, 4 classic big brush (sepia/burnt orange/gray/black), and 3 blacks: Fine, Medium, Bold. (So I can at least use them, and not leave them lying in my desk drawer!!)
I've decided this sketchbook will be dedicated to all things of October. :) It'll keep me creative/busy enough.

Great start Rachel! I love the theme :) I think I might follow in your steps a little bit and do a couple October themed drawings. Your doodles are definitely very fun looking :)
10-01-2010, 09:49 PM
Great pumpkins, and great theme for the sketchbook! October is a favorite month of mine as well (met my wife at a Halloween party a long time ago, and the crisp fall weather is nice as well). I've been using the Pitt pens a bit recently as well, thanks to seeing the work Robert does with them. Keep those October sketches coming!
10-02-2010, 12:50 AM
Great imagination. The jack-o-lanterns are cute, especially the one wearing a hat. :)
10-02-2010, 02:55 AM
Great pumpkins, including the scarecrow! Cool theme you're doing. I love the Pitt pens, they're so fast and powerful.

10-02-2010, 10:00 PM
Love those crisp, clean lines!
10-03-2010, 12:00 AM
Good theme. October is my favorite month being when I emerged into this world, and I adore fall, not that we have much of it in Central Texas. You are going to have fun with your Pitt pens, I love mine!
10-03-2010, 01:43 AM
The pumpkins look great, like the way you did the shading and cross hatching on the first one... those pens are cool. :)
10-03-2010, 04:40 AM
cool fun sketches :)
10-03-2010, 08:57 AM
Yay the pumpkins! I miss them, we don't really have them here or Halloween. Thanks for the smile! :)

The werewolf (?) is so cute being cross eyed.
Great scarecrow drawing.
10-03-2010, 10:29 PM
Thank you! Oops, yes, it's a Werewolf. :) NO matter what I do, it always turns out 'cute' when I draw cartoon stuff, I don't mind, though! Just happens that way...
10-03-2010, 11:10 PM
I'm just loving your halloween themed drawings, Rachel. They are both great. Nice shading. . . cool marker work.
10-03-2010, 11:20 PM
Thank you! :)
love that scarecrow :) your drawings have such a playful quality that is very nice
Nice sketches! The colors in the 'classic' Pitt set really look nice on these pieces.
10-04-2010, 03:30 AM
hehehehe! You've got a nice way with the Pitt pens, liking your style :)
10-04-2010, 12:46 PM

These are so fun! I really like the theme and your scarecrow especially.
10-04-2010, 05:26 PM
These are such great sketches! My favorite so far is the scarecrow ;) the colors of the pens are working very well with your theme. Love it!
10-04-2010, 07:07 PM
(Don't mind the picture quality... I used my camera phone, but enjoy those two for today):
A sleepy Wizard and a Witch
10-04-2010, 07:19 PM
These are so much fun Rachel, I love the sleepy Wizard :)
10-04-2010, 08:11 PM
Your characters are so much fun. Yay!
love the wizard...he actually looks like somebody I know!! (well, sans wizard hat, of course :wink2: )
10-04-2010, 09:43 PM

10-04-2010, 10:47 PM
Haha, that wizard is great! I'm thoroughly enjoying your sketchbook Rachel :)
10-05-2010, 12:59 AM

10-06-2010, 01:56 PM
Thanks everyone! :)
Here's a drawing from yesterday. I'm sure we all know this one!
love It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown :) perfect sketch of the characters!
10-06-2010, 03:37 PM
I'm unhappy with the way I colored it. I edited some changes, so along with today's sketching, I will put up the updated coloring of it. :)
10-06-2010, 07:21 PM
10-06-2010, 07:36 PM
My two favorites! Linus and Snoopy! and so well done!
10-06-2010, 10:41 PM
Excellent rendition of the famous characters.
10-06-2010, 10:54 PM
Sleepy wizard definitely had a potion. The only thing I like about Halloween other than candy corn is the Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin show. Haven't seen it in years, but I've liked it since I was a little kid and my kids did too. Your sketch is great fun and it brings me back fond memories. Thank you.
10-07-2010, 12:01 AM
the great pumpkin! I love snoopy
My wife is a major Snoopy fan, she would love these!
10-07-2010, 11:08 AM
Thanks everyone! :)
Yesterday's drawing, I've always loved Pluto. He was my favorite Disney character..
10-07-2010, 11:24 AM
Wonderful work! I think I like the updated peanuts drawing as well and Pluto is so darn cute. You do a really good job at recreating our favorite characters :)
These are great, Rachel! You should create your own characters and do a comic strip! :)
By the way, I've been to Xenia, Ohio believe it or not. In 2002 when my wife and I used to ride motorcycles, we took five weeks off and did a 9,000-mile trip across Canada and then back across the US. We stopped in Xenia because Harley-Davidson does an annual kind of road rally thing where the goal is to take a pic with your bikes and you in as many states as possible, one county for each letter of the alphabet and one city with each letter of the alphabet. Xenia is the only place in the country that we found that started with an 'X'.
10-08-2010, 02:06 AM
Good job on Pluto.
10-08-2010, 05:04 AM
wonderful sketches of the cartoon characters
10-08-2010, 06:43 AM
hehehehe, loving seeing some of these "older" characters - much more my vintage than manga!
10-08-2010, 10:05 AM
love him afraid of the bats! cute
10-08-2010, 05:07 PM
great cartoon pages, Pluto and the bats rock!
10-09-2010, 02:49 AM
The lines in your Great Pumpkin update brought out the characters really good... I'm a Charlie Brown fan... great job!
10-09-2010, 05:03 AM
LOVE the scarecrow and the Wearwolf, so much character and depth!
The Wizard and the Witch are great!!!!
Peanuts and Snoopy are CUTE!!!!
I just think Pluto is soooo GORGEOUS!!!!!!
Gentle Hugs, Stacey:grouphug:
10-09-2010, 01:04 PM
Pluto's the greatest :)
10-10-2010, 06:05 PM
These are so great, and confident use of your new pens. Aw - poor Pluto.
10-10-2010, 11:21 PM
The Snoopy cartoon came out great. At this time I always think of Charlie Brown and the great pumpkin. Love Pluto...I always thought he should get more play. For some reason they tend to push him aside and Mickey is always the star! lol
10-14-2010, 11:05 AM
I fell behind! Oops.
Here's two so far, I have a couple to catch up so I'm hoping to get at least 4-5 drawings done in the sketchbook today. :)
This was a very lazy sketch, I wasn't 'feeling' it at the time to contribute to the challenge..
Piglet holding a big happy pumpkin! (this was actually a lesson plan to create a cartoon character for a group of young kids that I will be teaching this afternoon on how to draw him, a group of 5th graders.. this will be a rewarding experience!)
10-14-2010, 11:36 AM
fun :) it's handy combining the teaching and the sketchbook isn't it. I keep doing the same thing.
10-14-2010, 02:49 PM
Love your cartoon characters! Keep up the good work.
10-14-2010, 10:41 PM
10-14-2010, 11:36 PM
Piglet looks awesome, I'm sure the 5th graders will have fun drawing him...
More great Halloween cartoons! Nice work.
10-15-2010, 01:23 AM
Awwwwww I LOVE Piglet, sooooo cute!
Hope you have fun teaching the kids!!!!
Gentle Hugs, Stacey
