A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Artist Journals
Project Leader: hummingbird
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Artist Journals are fascinating and can be many things. A place to experiment, make sketches, paint, collage, record events, try out new techniques and more. An artist journal is as individual as the artist creating it. Sometimes these are intensely personal places filled with thoughtful writing and art. Sometimes they are almost workbooks with notes about art experiments, what worked and what didn't. Some have no words and are completely art. Theres really no one definition of an artist journal.

For this project you are being asked to show us your art journal. The page(s) you'll share for this project can be but aren't limited to: paintings, sketches, rubber stamp, collages, photographs, pastels, colored pencil work, and writing. Share with us one or more pages. In your final entry(s) be sure to tell us the size of your page, what you use for a journal and the materials used in your page.

It will be exciting to see all the entries and maybe learn some new techniques from each other. The referance links I'm giving here all have excellant journals on them to inspire you.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=313)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

While I have kept journals most my life, well actually since Jr.High school...I always had difficulty integrating my art w/written word.
So I have chosen to do an art journal and seperately a written journal...though I do have a few pages that do contain both. Do they have to contain words...wasn't sure exactly...thanks!

duh.....it does help to read the fine print, question answered!!

Hi artbabe! Glad you joined. I see you got your question answered but I'll answer it here anyway in case others aren't too sure either. Basically, I'm trying to keep this pretty free of rules. If you enjoy writing then pages with art & writing are great. If you prefer just pages of art thats great too. Tis up to you :) Hopefully we'll get a nice variety of entries. Thanks for signing up!

Hi Cathleen- I didn't really set a limit on number of pages. I suppose something like between 1 and 4 or 5 pages would be good. As far as size, I think you can go up to about 500 pixels height or width. Thats what I've seen in other projects. If its too large, it won't upload. So if you stay about that size or under that should be good.

Pat "Make Journals Not War" Hahaha...I love it! This is along the lines of what I am currently doing in my journal...a collage of things that border on the whacky abstract side of art where anything goes. Its all about Fun & Play! :p

Thank You Pat for creating this project. I'm looking forward to watching this project grow and adding a few of my own journal creations.

Mariela what a wonderful idea and creations. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work. :D

Mariela --thanks for answering my questions about your pages. I've never been to France and this is a nice way to visit!

Everyone --About the number of final entries you can upload...I checked with our moderator (Sassybird) and its OK to do a few more than 4 or 5. She's done 8 for a project with no problem. So hope that helps alittle.

Thanks for replying to my other post Hummingbird----Altered Tag!
I've several examples posted in the Mixed Media forum of some of my work. I've scrapbooked for 4 yrs., played with rubberstamping, handmade books, cardmaking, and my recent interests have expanded to inclued both Artist journals and Altered Books. I've been experimenting a little with collage, although nothing is completed as of yet :)

I am a member of both Artist Journal 2 and Altered Books on Yahoo; however, I don't post as much being new but am learning a lot. Just wish I could figure out how to make more time for my creativity sometimes, LOL! I've always loved art, painting, and journals so these topics are right up my alley!

I'll post something as I got some items completed---cannot say exactly what I'll post as I've tons of items that are a work in progress.

Thanks for the invite,
Cath

Hi Cathy!

YAAAY glad you signed up! :) Sounds like the work you are doing is great for this project. They overlap alot. I think you'll enjoy this artist journals project...a journal is a great way to experiment with new ideas. The pages you do can be works in progress.

The lists you are on are terrific. Everyone, we're talking about two groups out of Yahoogroups.com One is for altered books called: alteredbooks. The other really pertains to what we're doing here which is artist journals and that list at Yahoo is: artistjournals2 if you are interested (theres an original artistjournals list I used to be on but it is full and closed now). I've been on all these groups. I had to quit for awhile when I was raising baby birds & doing alot of my paintings on eBay but I just got on artistjournals2. I don't post on it tho (cause I'm always over here:). I get the digests and they have lots of neat ideas. But those are wonderful groups for anyone interested.

Cathy, can't wait to see some of your pages! Thanks for signing up :)

Looking for advice here. I'm thinking about getting a few rubber stamps for my journal pages. Debating which ones to get. I've bought rubber stamps before and they I use them like 2 or 3 times and thats it. And they're kind of expensive. But it seems like once I've seen the image a couple times, I don't want to see it anymore. Does that make sense? Those of you that use them, are there ones that you find to be more useful than others? I would really like to get a set of numbers and letters....thinking outloud here. Anyone have any advice?

Pat

When I first started with stamps, I choose really "general themed" ones. I used them on cards and quickly got bored with them. I use them now in my scrapbooks, Art Books, acryllic paint! (be sure to clean immediately).

I've found the letter sets are great, a variety of uses there.

I even started wanting to know what stamps I had so as not to purchase duplicates so I created what I call an "Art Book" It has a lot of images of stamps I have and in a more interesting format than an image just stamped on plain white paper.

Well, Pat...guess I should admit to having rubberstamp mania...I usually buy unmounted stamps (and mount them myself on temporary blocks) because a) they're cheaper b) can use them with more media and c) unmounted are often times more unique designs...of course I have 8 glass shelves (4 foot long each) of mounted stamps, too *sigh*

Then I do some stamp carving and collect old printer stamps too....

For alphabets, numbers and quotes I like<br> Ma Vinci's Reliquary (http://crafts.dm.net/mall/reliquary/index.html)<br>Zettiology(http://www.zettiology.com/newpage27.htm)<br>and JUNQUE (http://www.junque.net/)

I have an extensive list of stamp sources...email me if you like. I do get carried away with toys:eek:

Cathy...I was a member of the original artistsjounals at yahoo several years ago until the moderator closed it & someone else took on AJ2...also was in alteredbooks....small world

MaVinci, Junque are pals of mine & have great alphabets & service. I've had my own online rubber stamp company for the past 4 years...have been closing it out and it's nearly there.

Cool sketch Te! At first I thought she was a mermaid :) Conjurs up images of a mermaid...maybe because her evening bag is shell shaped? And the bottom of her dress is like mermaid fin? But I see a foot poking out so I know she's not really a mermaid, but makes a neat association.

These art pages were done in an alteredbook project I was involved in with 7 other artists. We passed our books around and arted in each others, it took about 8 months. Some of the pages will be published in a book next year by Rockport on art books.

The next pages were from a journal I hand made using aged looking paper for the cover and coffee dyed the pages before I sewed them in. More of these pages are at

http://www.art-e-zine.co.uk/cathleenperkinsart.html

Yes, those are rubber stamps used on several pages, I have many sets.

Hi Everyone, This is gonna be a catch up post so I don't make 10 new posts --just gonna combine it all.

Cathleen, thank you for the URL to your pages. Gotcha boomarked now. I love what you said about dreams on the one page. And I saw where you stamped "No. 2" on a tag. I like numbers. Been into the number 3 for awhile for some reason.
Hey that beginning part of the URL looks familiar ;) I think thats the same as I was using in the referance links for Susan Cohen's work. And Congrats!!! on getting your work published. That's awesome! You'll have to let us know when the book is out. Also thank you for the comment on my page. I've got another one started. They're kind of a mish-mash of things.

Its a real treat to check our project everyday and see the work being done. I think we're gonna have a veeeery kewl gallery of finished entries. Its already looking super.

Btw, I use instant coffee crystals, add a little water and use it like that and then can control how dark or light I want it. Also add a few dry crystals on a spot and it makes a darker marker making it look older...
Artfest was a very artistic event but it was the first one and the housing was pretty bad. Met a lot of wonderful women, though from all over the country.

No, the original artistsjournals didn't have an Out the Window project...we really had few projects...mostly chatter.

Yes, that is the same wonderful site as Susan's work. Gillian has much beautiful work on her site.

Since my spiral bound art journal is 8 1/2x11" its pretty easy to scan my pages rather than taking pictures digitally and hoping for good light and true color...than I got an idea....thought I might share...

If you are working on an image/composition and are not quite sure (for example) where you want to place text, how big, etc (in fear of screwing it up) :p You could simply scan the image into your photo-paint program and play around in the program trying different text placements and such without commitment. When you have it all figured out...you can make the commitment without fear. :D

PS. I updated my art journal project with a few progress images if your interested.

Tammy, This one seems spring like to me. I like it! I love how you have been detailing eveything you use in your pages. On this one you said you used pastels. Are they oil pastels or chalk pastels? Do you have to use any fixative on them? I bought some pastels for my journal but haven't tried them yet. I like what you did here.  :cat:

I wouldn't call it Spring....I'd call it more seasonal denial. :D Sometimes I wish I was a bear so I could just sleep through the winter. Tehehe!

About the details yes, I'm trying to keep track of all the mixed mediums I use in my images. These journal pages are purely experimental fun...so keeping track and working with mixed mediums is a learning process for me. I figured I would detail the elements of my images here in case someone wanted to replicate or try a particular element in their journal.

Yes the pastels used are chalk. The only chalk in this particular image is around the edge, the green frame...then smudged from the outer-edge in. When its complete I use a matte pastel spray which sets and locks in the pastel onto the paper. Can't recall off hand what brand. Little tip on chalk pastels: I'm using a spiral book and creating my images right inside the book, so when working with chalk pastel I use a piece of white paper (or tracing paper) as a cover sheet for the pastel image to keep the pastels from smudging and smudging onto the previous page until its complete.

Pastels are quite fun. I enjoying smudging out the colors to blend one color into another. I use everything from paper towels to Q-Tips to smudge with. Oil pastels are my next experiment. I bought some student oil pastels to play with and have no clue how to use them. Hahaha! This will truly be a first!

Good Luck with your experiments!

Hi Livenlearn! I hear ya about winter --wish I could sleep thru it too. Yep, the journal *is* the place for experimentation. You are doing yours proud :) I appreciated the tips on working with the pastels. Lots of good info there! The ones I have are oil pastels but haven't done anything much with them yet. Like you thats next. Keep up the good work!

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum, have been in the pastel room for the past two years. I am so glad I found you, as art journaling is my passion! I have posted a few pics in the project room but I noticed you are posting at way more pixels than I did. I thought I had to keep it to 72 pixels for it to upload. I am not a techie, so if this is wrong info please let me know. I will scan more of my recent pages soon and upload. How many can we upload? Wow, so glad you are here, I love seeing everyone's art!

I love your innovative pages Shari!! You seem to enjoy women themes as I do as well. Love the Artchix images...Helga is a good friend & my art has been in her zine a few times.

I didn't pay any attention to pixels, just size of my image. You did good. I think they said we could post up to 7 pages. Really enjoyed your work!!

Hi

I found this project last night but can't figure out how to join it. Duh.
I also just recently joined the site as you may have figured out. Can someone head me in the right direction please ?

I love sharing art journals. Presently I am sharing journals with two other women artists. Each of us has one journal for a month, then we mail that journal and work in the other, so I am actually working in 4. I will end up with one from each woman and they will each have one from me. The fun part is we haven't figured out yet who gets which journal so we work really hard on all of them. LOL.

Glad to be a part of this site.

You can join by going back to the first page and where it says additinal information, click and it will take you to the project and give you more ideas....usually there IS a join this project button, but I didn't find one, but once you start to upload your images you will be added to the list of participants I should think! Glad you are joining us!! Looking forward to seeing your work!

I'm scared to post this. I have a journal which I mess around with creativity in. I don't know if I would call it an artist journal as much as a journal with art. Makes no sense huh? Anyway here is a page.

Good grief - I'm obviously new. Please forgive me - I posted about 13 images from my visual diary to this project. I hadn't read any of the posts in this forum. You are limiting the entries to 4 or 5 pages - please forgive me. Do you know how I can fix this mess up??? Also, I assumed that entries in ones visual diary are not exactly completed works of art - doesn't do one any good to presume does it. So, I did not submit a final entry and put everything in the progress area.

Help!!

I love this - it reminds me of the images of Afghani women and media I have seen that tells of their personal struggles for education, health etc - so it is appropriate to say "take risks" in everything that we undertake, especially those of us less hindered in our lives. Your work is a carefully chosen montage of colours and images - delightful.

I have been reading with interest about the artists journals. I am presently working on a cover for a journal. I intend to contain my journal pages within two card covers. I am going to drill two holes through the bendable spine of the cover as well as through all the pages and then hold them all together with nuts and bolts. Any other ideas for making the pages into a book? Anyway here is the front cover of my first journal.

lisilk
02-21-2003, 05:33 AM
Re: the nuts and bolts idea for holding your journal together. ( Nice job on the cover by the way ! ) Some people do very clean, spare journals that work with commercial art journals. ( Line drawing, pencil sketches, etc. )

Mine are very three dimensional because I collage and attach objects willy nilly. I usually break the bindings within the first month. You want your pages to open freely. If this is going to be a journal of personal exploration and not for show, I would sugest something more forgiving. I drilled holes and added rings in 3 places like a school binder so when the pages did detach, they had room to move.

If the journal itself is to be an art piece, there are several artists in the mixed media section who make gorgeous hand made books. I suggest you start a new thread asking about bookbinding and you will get more answers because it is mostly people who participated in this project who will look at this.

Happy Journaling !

Li

Yes, I guess I do want the journal to be an art piece in itself but I do want to get at the pages and like you add lots of dimension by adding 3d collages etc. I can see that your idea of getting at the pages as in a binder would be advantageous. Do you mean that you drill the holes and then place the middle of a school binder into your own journal? Can you buy those snap clip rings?
Pardon my ignorance...this is my first attempt at making a journal.
Thanks again. :) I will ask in a new thread about the book binding and perhaps get some more inspiration from some of the others who have made their own.

I've been missing for a while. I need to get busy on this project! I have a question though. I am new at this. Am I suppose to post my journal pages through the project page? I posted it like a new thread post and mine is big. I want a cute little one like you all have!

If I do it that way, will it show up in the project site?

Rose Queen, Thanks for your remarks about my entries. I'd never done art journals until this past year when I start sharing journals with two other women artists. Now I have five going ! LOL. Am not an over achiever.

Gayle, in addition to what Rose Queen told you.... If you upload your images into the final entries section, they will not come up in the discussion forum. If you want us to know and see what you've added....go to one of your entries ( browse final images ) and click on one of the images. Once the picture comes up, you'll see a place that says " comment." Click on that. You'll then see two lines of computer gobbledigook, which you will leave. You'll also see a line that says " delete this line and add your comments. " pretty self explanatory, that one. Once you submit, it will show up in the discussion forum and we'll be alerted that someone has added something.

Good luck. Looking forward to seing your entries.
