View Full Version : "Wet evening, Borough Market"

The viewpoint for this was dictated by the overhead canopy and the light behind which gave enough light to paint by. The drinkers were also sheltering so did not move around too much which enabled me to depict them a bit more carefully. The reflections in the puddles were fun!
I think I drove my friend Karl Terry mad with this one as he packed up about an hour before I did, sorry mate!

This was one I did earlier in the day which to my mind was less effective and I probably lost momentum with it before I finished it and said "enough is enough"! Probably should have taken the thumb blender to it in a big way!

Another great pair of pictures. What was the light like for the second one, on my monitor it is flat in terms of value range. Lovely gesture in your figures, as usual.

Mick, it was a very dull day so quite dark in there. Even pushing the values to try to create some contrasts it was not really getting anywhere. I suppose it would have been OK if the sun had come out for just ten minutes to get some light into it but it was not to be:(

Wonderful! I especially love the "busy-ness" of the first one, and I like the architectural elements in both.
Thanks!

this part of pa is a real winner for you, everything stated just right, I like the second one as is , with the empty spaces feel like that spectacular walker just says everything and the rest is just there supporting it.

I like these! great energy.
For reasons that aren't even clear to me, I first thought of something Van Gogh did, and something a great french artist did (the one who did a lot of indoor paintings of the night life and loves in Paris).
It is late & I'm too tired to research it right now....:(
Thanx 4 posting, these pleaseth our eye.

You picked some tuff ones to tackle Michael, lol.
I like the first one, well done. I hear you about the lack of enthusiasm some times it just goes south for whatever reason.
Have you ever had one that you didn't really want to do but you started it anyway and thought why I'm I doing this? But the more you worked on it it slowly started to get better and your enthusiasm increased more and more? I have those occasionaly.

These are great Mike, very brave to tackle busy indoor subjects, you have a great touch with the figures. Think I prefer the second but then I'm a sucker for ladies in red. Rob

Totally agree, the first is overall more exciting, but the lady in red saves the second one. Both are difficult subjects on a good day, all the more so in this weather.

I try not to start unless I am fired up but I know what you mean, sometimes you go through a bad patch with a painting but persevere and suddenly it starts to come right.

What an incredible portrayal of light and reflection in the first one! I'm really impressed with the way that you show light from a point with a close circle and then a fixed light circle. It really makes the light look natural. The highlights on the people are perfect. The reflections are fantastic!
I like your portrayal of people in the second one as well. Leaving it unfinished has given it a feeling of motion, which suits the painting fine.
Great work.

Thanks Brian and thanks for the explanation of how I paint lights, hadn't really thought about that before! It's funny but there is usually a small piece of any painting that you know you couldn't do better if you had the time again and in this case the bit I like most is the reflection on the black man's head and the back of his neck!
