A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: FND: Salt Water Summer
Project Leader: sundiver
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Wildlife
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Welcome to Friday Night Drawing! If this is your first Drawing Event, double welcome! It's all about making art together and sharing and enjoying each other's efforts.
The theme for this event is Salt Water Summer. For those of us in northern climes, summer is now just a memory, while members downunder are looking forward to theirs. But wherever we are, there's nothing like being by the sea in summer.
I'll be posting lots of images, or you may wish to use your own. All my images, including still lifes, are of salt water or within glancing distance of it (even if it looks like a river, it's a tidal inlet). All images here are personal photographs taken by me, sundiver. WC members are welcome to use the images to make art, and to sell the result, but you cannot copyright the images.
You have until 6:30 EST to prepare. Please post your work after 2 hours; if it's not finished, post final images later.
Discussion Thread will be in the Drawing and Sketching Forum.
Chat is at 9:00 EST.
(And, if you have to join in anytime later, glad you could make it!
Have fun!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=309)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Okay...Since I just found the project...I think I'll join in! Are pastels ok...or is it supposed to be a drawing?
carly

(Sundiver, this thread was in the Science Fiction forum...I think by mistake...I moved it over here with a redirect. If it should go back...please let me know!)

Dear Luvy and all,

I think that's in part a credit to the photographer/project director, don't you? The photos were great references, and I have to say that I had a tough time choosing. In the end, I copped out with my golden sunset, and did what I thought would be easy for me, that I knew I could pull off in less than 2 hours! I'd have been happy to draw nearly any of the photos, Sundiver. Thank you for such a great selection!

Also, that photo with the red buildings in the center on the wharf was not in the initial photos posted in this forum, so I didn't see that one till after I'd started! <lol> I might have chosen that one instead if I'd seen it before....but this being my first, I chose what I felt I liked _and_ could handle! I hope there will be many more of these FND events. I've had a wonderful time already, and the fun is just beginning!

Ha, K, well, it wasn't exactly a few colors, but you're right that it wasn't that many of the 120 I had to work with! This was immense fun. Many of the colors you see were actually several blended together, like black grape+indigo blue+dark umber=a dark, indescribable color. ;)

Thank you, Gredelin. I've been on a rampage for the past couple of weeks doing sketches limited to 45 minutes or less. That practice paid big dividends tonight. This was only 5 X 7, and there wasn't much real "drawing" involved, so it wasn't too hard to get it done in an hour. I've done lots of sunsets, and initially thought I'd try for an 8 X10 in two hours, but then chickened out and did a 5X7 instead. I'm a little disappointed with myself that I didn't pick a more difficult photo reference, and instead did what I felt comfortable with, but there's always next time.

The red biuldings are historic Lunenburg, Nova Scotia , which I discovered recently is the home of WC's own AxlHappyGoth. What a beautiful place to live!
I can't get into the chatroom either!

Jamie [COLOR=crimson]Well, however many colours you used...it is so skilfully done that my eye must have mixed them for me (at least that's my story....I am probably not attuned enough to the subtle differences between colours, and can't discern them yet...). I think it is a great piece!

These drawing events are fun eh? We used to have them every weekend...hasn't been one for a while.

I know exactly what you mean... sometimes I'm afraid I make that kind of choices all the time... I've started to ask myself "When was your last good failure?" just to try and keep learning instead of playing it safe. I look forward to seeing what you'll do 'next time' :) !

Okay, well I know you said you're not happy with this, but I'll bet if you take a little turpenoid or turpentine on a Q-tip and blend some of the Prismacolor, you'll end up with something you like.

I almost chose this Great Blue heron photo. They are close to my heart and I see them almost daily---big, graceful-yet-gawky birds outside my window.......flying overhead....perching on branches preening themselves. They are the queens of the bird world, don't you think?

Unfortunately, I spent 3 1/2 hours trying to stay on line and getting knocked off after anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes. I didn't get on long enough to even copy a reference image until the chat was already started, or supposed to have. By then, I was too frustrated and tired to begin painting.

Everyone's done beautifully. Thanks for the FND, SD. I used to love these and never missed one until they began not happening regularly. I'll give it a go tomorrow and post after two hours--promise.

I sure know what you mean about the struggle against detail. I have to force myself also.Your berries have a lot of depth, and they still look jiucy, and I still wanna eat them! (Come to think of it, I most likely did eat them :D)

Hey thanks Sundiver!!!

For those that have seen my other work they will know exactly how I just have to have every detail so leaving this work in this loose form is driving me CWAZY!!! Sorry couldn't get in to chat... when one has three teenage girls living at home anything can happen and usually does!!!

Yes, pastel pencils on red Strathmore.

I see that Colleen has been working in PSP with her image. I played around with that this afternoon. I have had this program for over a year and am just beginning to look into the techniques. I have just used it to resize pictures and file. As usual, not useing the potential thing again.

Notice went out in D&S, CP, Mixed Media, Pastels, and Wc forums. Bobby can't pm people any more because there's more than 90 on his list..takes too long. There's a lot of work involved for one person, plus he hosts a lot of the events himself.
There's a sticky here in this forum inviting members to host events..hasn't been a response since August.

I'm such a newbie. ;) I would have just left a simple comment if I knew the project comments would condense all that info into one big paragraph. Tehehe!

Oh well! *shrug* :D

PS. Yes, there are loads of tissue paper out there that you can buy from craft shops that have various printed designs. Someplaces even sell them in printed or color theme sets, which could make some pretty interesting collages.

I just kept it simple and used the tissue paper I had on hand for my future projects.

TY Jamie..in a hurry to do a few of these lovely pictures I had to think simplisticly..whew thats hard for me. I love detail. As for the Heron:

Okay, well I know you said you're not happy with this, but I'll bet if you take a little turpenoid or turpentine on a Q-tip and blend some of the Prismacolor, you'll end up with something you like.

I would like to do that but have to use another method as I have birds and the smell is not good for them. It didnt live up to my expectations so I probably wont work it any more. :( I do have one more to put up for this project (after putting drivers back in for my scanner) I wanted 3 but will settle for 2 entries.

Sundiver, again thank you so much for doing this it was a wonderful time for me. I have really missed the FND/SND. whats that saying...absence makes the heart fonder...hehehehe well it did here and with such great pictures to choose from.

Fifteen minutes? As in 1/4 of an hour? This is really good, I can almost hear the waves, great movement! Amazing.

is that your own special technique/style?

well... I don't really have a 'style' I think... and 'technique' even less... this is my 7th pastel ever so I'm just improvising. I do tend to go at it with a lot of diagonal strokes though - maybe I'm getting there! Thanks for the encouraging comment!

I like how you made the treeline at the horizon fade into the distance - gives a lot of depth.

The texture of the paper really adds interest to this one. I really like how you did all the wood in the foreground. And no, the rocks don't look fluffy to me!

Dear Mel,
I'm glad I was able to inspire you to break out the watercolor pencils! I like the look you got with your entry. FWIW, if you want a more intense color, you may want to try out other brands too. The only Derwent watercolor pencils I tried were the woodless ones---the "Aquatone" pencils. I could not get adequate color out of them no matter how long I worked the color or how hard I pressed, and eventually I sold the set on Ebay. I don't know if the watercolor pencils are the same in the core as the woodless Aquatones, but if you're having a similar problem, check out another brand. And keep on sketchin'!

Hey Jamie!

I don't know if the watercolor pencils are the same in the core as the woodless Aquatones,

I'd put money on that! Whew!! Thought it was operator error :D . Hopefully we'll have another FND sometime soon...really enjoyed myself!!

Amen! Sundiver, can you host another FND, with the same photos again? I know we can just do them and post them, but it's not the same!

Um, I don't know if that sort of thing is "done". You'll have to ask the Person In Charge. (Bobby)
But as long as people keep posting, the thread will stay current.
It's so cool to see pictures I took made into art!
Glad you liked the pics. I indulged myself in a new camera this past summer- my old SLR is from the early 70's- and have taken a gazillion pictures, enough to keep me in ref pics all winter. And most of them are in Prince Edward Island, which is just the prettiest place.

I knew this one would be a challenge that I might not be able to meet. I'm a sucker for reflections and couldn't resist. It's got every color under the sun there...when in doubt about which color to use, use 'em all!
(Assistance will be gratefully accepted!)

Well, as I said, I was happy with these _before_! But hey, these feet look sensational now! I think you should get the tenacity award for not giving up until you get the result you want.

Lots of credit to Sundiver for his fabulous photo references that kept this 2-hour project going like an Eveready battery!

LOL....It just dawned on me that these feet were NOT among Sundiver's photo refs....they were Miss Mouse's, right?
