Ruth, if there's one thing I've learned in life is that you CANNOT please everyone :)

I can hardly wait to start my painting and to see what other's come up with:)

Ruth,

Those people who want to destroy and delete any reference to Christmas are very nasty individuals. If they don't want to participate, there are several hundred other projects they can do. Many of us still want to celebrate Christmas as a Christian holiday.

Just ignore them.

Right now, it seems as if some nasty bug has bitten people in the Cafe. There are all sorts of little cat fights going on.

Bah, humbug, to them all!

Your project is a good idea and sounds like fun. I've already signed up.

I changed the wording slightly (for a quiet life) so hopefully there will be no more trouble :)

Al, thanks to you too!

Heavens, I didn't know the cafe could get so unpleasant. And here I've been whining because I couldn't seem to get me computer to go there!
I'm not signing up for this project but will be tackling it on my own. Seems like whenever I have a painting to do that I'm any degree accountable for, I just keep messing it up. Definite psycho blob there! *lying on the couch, "well doc, it all goes back to performance anxiety in childhood:D *

Thanks, madmum. But I'm pretty sure it's going to be just an experiment in technique (see next comment)

and I chose it because it looked the easiest to me!! :D

seriously, I wanted something that I could really concentrate on the shading via the underpainting and I feel those figures in that nativity set are custom made just for that!!

VERY interested in seeing how YOU approach it:)

Well, mine needs work yet on reflection in the large balls. I was thinking my smaller balls were looking more like berries, but now after leaving it for the evening and looking at it, I think I achieved the reflection in those. Oh...and my ribbon turned into a rather weird pointsetta. :D Artist's license?? LOL

Would someone be really kind, and put these together. My digital pooped out on me. Thanks so much.

Becky I think you did really well! And the ribbon IS shaped like a poinsettia anyway. Lovely rich colours you used in that, and the little baubles really sparkle. Sorry, I am technically inept when it comes to stitching together  Sure somebody can help tho!

Thank you Ruth! Well, I did a little bit of work on the balls/bulbs...but not sure I've achieved what I wanted to. I'll scan it again and post. Guess I better post it in the project thingy too. Fun stuff! Think I'll try something else.

Em...of course I would have guessed you would pick THAT one to do....hard, hard, hard in my estimation. Maybe I'll be brave enough to try that one too. Can't do much more than learn, I guess. And that's a good thing!

Madmum,

I'd love to take part in this...... but I don't have a color printer to print one of the winning photos and my computer is too far away from my art table (or I'd just stare at the screen!), so I can't use one of your wonderful pics for a reference!!!

If you don't mind, I've chosen a photo from a magazine of Christmas baubles in a glass bowl of pine boughs and I'm going to give it a try. Even though I won't be signing up to officially take part in your project, I'll post the finished product so you all can critique it for me.

I don't have a clue as to how reflections are done on glass balls (I'm learning as I go) so the WIP's you've been posting here already are giving me lots of help as I study how everybody does it. I'm really impressed by what everybody has done so far - I hope I could be half as good!

Nandie.

Hi Nandie-
I have a rather low-res image I printed out in b/w for value/form reference only. I think it frees you to do things in the colors you love best (like my blue above. I love orangey yellows, but am positively nutty about blue glass. Go figure)

I've uploaded my WIP photos. This is where I am right now. Kind of stuck. Not sure if it needs much more than the lower ground added in and some darks. Let me know if you think I should "punch" up some of the warmth in the figures. I am not happy with Mary's face :( It's so small that it makes it difficult to paint and the Nativity set itself has very few details.

Em,

Your soft purple shadows defining the shapes of the figures and their garments are wonderful. (BTW, I've borrowed your purple shadows technique in my paintings lately, I really like it. :p )

I like the way the glow from the background spills over onto the figures. Very nice painting. I thought this was one of the more difficult reference photos.

Pam,

Love the way the colors spill over from one shiny ball to the adjacent ones. The silver ball in the center radiates with so many different shades, it's great!

This is the same photo I've earmarked to try. Thanks for the inspiration on the reflections.

Bit of a silly question, but for a project newbie, do you have to keep the ref images the same, or can you miss out bits in the painting?

Hi Visionary,

Thanks for the tip...... I actually did try that already, but my b&w printouts didn't emphasize the values (darks & hilights) as well as the color photos did, and so they weren't good enough to figure out how to do the reflections on the glass baubles.

It seemed to work great for you though, good job on your picture. Blue was a great color to choose for all that glass!

Hello Sarah, the reference images are there as inspiration. What makes projects fascinating is how different people adapt the image to suit their own style and method. So feel free to choose just one part of a picture. :) Have fun!

Madmum,

Thanks for allowing me to take part with my own reference photo. I had a lot of fun with this, and it was sure a challenge trying to figure out how to do reflective surfaces. I used a lot of scrap paper practising baubles before I tried to do it on my painting!!

Hope you like it, I've already posted it over in the projects.

Nice sketch Sarah :) Now when you get to this stage in the final painting, you need to add more darks. It'll help to make the highlights really pop! For the highlights remember to keep them rounded on the baubles, somebody likened them to eyeballs ;)

Bethany,

This is beautiful! I really like the way you've captured the glow of the burning wick through the skin of the candle. The greens and shiny balls showing reflections are lovely too. The little pine cone is perfectly placed and very nicely finished.

I missed this when you posted it--very nice, cheerful Christmas scene. I like your soft colors and loose brush strokes.

Very nice painting--lovely glow in the candle, interesting background, and lovely glass look in the balls. The greens and shadows and diagonal composition add to the overall success of your painting.

Sylvia

BTW, welcome to the Watercolor Forum here at WC--hope to see more of your paintings.

Joann, this turned out really well. The stained glass style is very fitting for this subject, and I like how you simplified it!

Thank you for all the nice comments :) I had a lot of fun with this. I painted it on white watercolor blank card about 5x7 inches. The red and yellow is winsor&newton gouache and I used burnt umber and antwerp blue watercolors. I am seriously thinking of trying a pencil drawing of this too. Thanks for looking, Sandy

I really like this, Carol. I find most Christmas still-lifes pretty boring. Your background and glowing candles really makes this one special. Zyffyr
