My second colored pencil. Not quite done and I see the problem now. The --- wait, heh, okay horse people:

Other than the shading being off in a couple of places, what's "anatomically" wrong with this and how do I fix it?

Horse kiss to the person who pin-points it exactly http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Here it is -- Prismacolor on black Mi-Tientes, about 8x8 (it's so NICE being able to work small for once!)

You sure have the eye down pat, that's wonderful!!

I think there's too much forehead and the face is a little too narrow. Maybe the (our left) left eye isn't matching the right one...

The forehead seems too narrow to me. But, as Shirl said, the eye is great.

You're both very close http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Actually, the forehead is fine. The nose bone is a tad too narrow because I didn't see exactly what the problem was and started lightening it in places trying to re-balance the head.

I'll give on this one: if you block the stripe and the area below the eyes and just look at the star, you'll notice it's smack-tab center and the forehead is the proper width. The stripe, however, is over too far to our right and throwing the entire face off.

The stripe, in the reference photo I used for the anatomy, was originally a highlight and not a stripe at all. I wasn't thinking too well about placement when I decided to make that into a stripe http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Anyhow, cover it up and you'll see what I mean. I need to re-darken the area to our left of the nose bone again and either remove the stripe or move it over to our left quite a bit.

Hrm, this all might be fuzzy, so I've drawn some lines on the image to demonstrate:

Some of the lines are a little off (hate doing this kinda stuff on my computer), but you can see the yellow line -- that's the center of the nose bone and forehead -- and how the stripe is way over to our right. You can also see where I tried to fix it by making the nose too narrow on the left.

It's normal for a horse to have an off-center head marking, but part of it usually does end up in the center in at least one place.

Roan:
I think that the cheekbone ridges are absent or not pronounced enough. It makes it look like a very young horse but still I think those cheekbones would be more prominent. Love the eyes. The offcenter stripe didnt bother me.

I started to say something about the nose and forehead but wasn't sure I needed the horse kiss LOL!

You're right, Barb. I kept moving stuff in trying to balance things http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks Tammy!

This one's for the "junk" pile anyhow http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/wink.gif

I especially like how you did the eye and the reflections in the eye and the colours you have used. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
