This one is from last year. It's acrylic on canvas paper. I am planning to do a larger 24 x 30 painting of a mare & her foal in the same sort of colors.
What is the opinion...?

The line through he image is from the combining two separate scans, this was before I had a digital camera.

Thanks for looking & comments.

I love that mane! Don't know if its the scan but as it is I'd like to see more of a hint of glean on the eye and perhaps a tad bit of highlight on the nose just to bring it out a bit.
Lovely work!

Don't worry, its gonna be all right....

Beautiful. I especially like the mane. The only thing that bothers me is the nose. Should it be a bit more tapered, with that "dish" that arabians are known for? Trust me, I'm not an expert, but something seems off. If you hadn't said it was an arabian, I wouldn't have any problems with this at all. It *is* lovely. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thansk for the praise. It means a lot. It's hard for me to paint horses I've beena round them a lot, but that was before I started to paint.
Thsi was after a photo of an "Arabian" but I think it's not a pure bread. The full body picture shows more of the Arabian features but it's not one of those pure bread ones
that look perfect.
I actually made him look better.

I have to make sure with my next one to do a better job an the contrast, it's a little better in person.

Thanks All.

Ginette,
I like this painting alot. The only thing that distracts me is how close the nose colour and the background colour are. I really like how you did the mane. I also agree with Tammy,on adding a glint in the horses eye and a highlight on the horses nose. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I love the mane. How did you accomplish that look. Brush? Other? Manes are difficult but you did a very nice job.

I did the mane in different stages.
But I used a fan brush stiff bristles first
a size 4 & 4, using gesso. It's a matter of getting a nice swing and starting with a harder pressing down and swing and loosening the pressure to the tips of the hair.
Sounds weird the way I am explaining I'm sure.
I start the fan brush with the whole full brush and twist it as I go to the side making a narrower stroke!

I used a little blue with gesso and translucent gel to get the highlights in the mane. I let it dry and layer using the same tequnique but smaller brushes every step.
At the end I use a soft watercolor brush and load it thick with gel/gesso mixture and slightly brush n individual clumps of hair.

I think lots has to do with using gel & gesso in what I do with the mane here.
Also layering.

Well I did my best to explain a little, I am not that good with words.
I am going to post a couple of detail pix.

Looks great Ginette! Like everyone else, love that mane! Read your instructions, but I don't get it (just me http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif). It looked like some kinda of dry brush technique. Yea, I'd like to see a smaller muzzle too. Overall nice style!

Thanks Shirl,

It's not you... I just make a sorry teacher. I lack the technical knowledge to really explain what I am doing. I just do what I do until it looks the way I like it and I experiment. But I don't really keep tracks off all the steps and it's hard to remember, let alone explain it. English is only my second language. The art world vocabulary of mine is still small.

Great mare. Really reminds me of someone's style. Of cource I can not remember who. The mane is fantastic!!! I think if you beefed up the highlights on her face it would help alot. Right now all you see is mane. I don't think the face needs more dish. There are many types of arabs and she fits still as arab. Can't wait to see the larger one with the foal.

Many thanks. Yes the face really needed some highlights. Too late for it it sold last year. It was a bit better in person.
I am working on a "Sunflower" commission and my next one will be the mare with her foal.
I will list it as it progresses.
