One thing I like about painting familar things is the liberty one can take with the subjects :P

This was originally intended to be a Fresian, but I personally don't care much for painting black horses -- I find them rather boring. That's just me :P

Anyhow, think of it as a "fresian-type" horse (as an aside, Fresians CAN be non-black, but you can't register them. Only black is accepted in the modern Fresian). I've been mucking about, changing this and that and not sure where I want to take this fella. Most of this is a tonal Nupastel underpainting, the brown I just recently added and I sorta like the effect of the brown with some grey showing through. I've also been experimenting with fixative and have several layers here as well.

What do you guys think? Keep with the brown? Leave some grey showing? Go palomino? Dun? Dunno!

Oh, please ignore the hooves. When I do horses I constantly redraw as I go along and I haven't been concentrating on them at all.

Currently Nupastel and some Schmincke on olive-green/brownish Wallis.

To be honest, Darrell, I don't have a lot of reference pics at the moment. When I do a breed I don't know too well, I just study them visually and use any old breed for the initial sketch. Then I flesh it out according to the breed I'm depicting and add in stuff from my head.

This summer I intend (we'll see if it happens :P) to get out to some horse shows and take some pictures. Anything I take I'll send you copies of.

Hey, wait. I do have a couple of reference pics you might want to try. Do you want a couple of a quarter horse foal? I don't care for them much as they're rather old and dark, but I've seen you do wonders with less :P

Lemme see if I still have those ones of The Auditor. He's by the racing quarter Separate Cheques out of Cat (can't remember her registered name). Lemme know if you are interested and I'll send them along to you.

Wonders! I found a six that are reasonable. Two of the foal and four of different horses -- all mine I can send. Before I send them, do you want them in TIF or JPG format? As TIF they are approx 2 megs each. Not sure how you want to handle this. I'll send the two of the foal as TIF until I hear from you.

Looks like a Fresian (however you spell it) to me! Well done so far. Curious, I find doing black horses the most interesting--I have to include every little highlight or whatever, such a challenge. Same with black dogs, etc. Am also very anxious to see a horse drawn by Darrell....

Whelp, black horses . . . black dogs. . . black doberman. . .black labrador. . . black lab that belongs to my mother-in-law. . .mother-in-law's lab Molly. . . Molly whom I have painted at LEAST 12 times now.

I was trying to spare everyone the sob story :P My mom-in-law is a treasure and my my second greatest fan but she just loves that dang dog too much. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Bah, maybe I'll make it a "Roan" Friesian-type and use it for a logo :P
