This is a yellow headed blackbird done on Canson Sketch 9 x12 with pencils HB and 2B.

I love the way blackbirds hang on the side of a reed like that...especially the redwings. this is a nice sketchy study of a yellow head...keep it up animal

Thanks for your comments.
I am not sure when or if I am going to paint this one. Once I feel comfortable with colour i will do some birds or animals in colour but for now I am just going to practice techniques in colour. I am probably going to buy a book by Lee Hammond on Coloured pencil for doing birds but will have to see.

If you feel more comfortable with monochrome sketch techniques right now, but want to give color a shot, consider this -- try using black paper and just a bright yellow opaque pencil or oil pastel.
