A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!
Title: Chimneys
Project Leader: Scattykat
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: 30
Maximum participants allowed: 25
Description:
Hi project peeps, dh has been out to check our log store and ensure we'll be warm fer Christmas. It got me thinking of log fires and smokin' chimneys, and what sort of chimneys Santa prefers, so I thought I'd start a new project fer Santa - Chimneys.
Have you ever really looked at chimneys, some of them are so wonderfully ornate, other incredibly ramshackle and rustic. short fat smoke stacks and tall skinny factory pipes, counrty house multiple ones and garden shed tin can make overs. Could go on, but I know you are an imaginative lot. So here goes...
There wll hopefully be 24 small original paintings to do and send off, and there'll be participants all around the world, so postage is a consideration.
PLEASE really think about these facts BEFORE pressing the sign up button.
Please send me your mailing address by the close of sign up, and I will get the list out to all participants asap after that date.
The theme may have a Christmassy tint, let's be reasonable, as long as we aim to get our chimneys finished and mailed by end of Feb 2011, that's 6 months, that'd be fine.
Look forward to seeing you in the thread...

This sounds interesting but I will be gone for the next month. I have never done a project like this before. Should I sign up now and get the details later? Jen

What a great idea but I don't dare... I'll just have to watch this time

Should be no problem with you signing up. Just sign up, pm Kat your address, and when you get back, you can get started. You will still have plenty of time.

Hiya, wow - that was quick, expected it to be a few days before this project showed up.
Jen I can't really get started on mine for a few weeks either, got a couple of expos coming up, just thought it'd be nice to start a project now that'd keep us busy over the colder months, something to do curled up on the sofa in front of the fire....don't forget chimenys have two ends... stockings hanging from the mantle piece with a hot coals glowing in the grate, oooh I wanna get started now, but must clear the decks first.
24 atc's or postcards, 24 little subjects to seek out, it's like looking for sweeties hidden around yer nieghbourhood  . Hope you decide to sign up. you too Jeanne, and Helen, cogitate awhile :D ...
Kat it says the medium is painting. Does that eliminate graphite and cps?

Okay, I didn't think about 24 paintings I thought we would all do one and send it to one person and they would send one to someone else and so on. Not sure I could come up with 24. Have to think about that. Do they all have to be different? Not sure I am creative enough to make 24. I do like that it can be any part of the chimney though. I'm mulling. Would it be too late to sign up at the begining of October? Jen

Waiting till Oct would depend if it fills before then. All cards have to be original artwork and one sent to each person on the list who signed up. I don't know if Kat listed just ATC size or not but those are tiny and usually 6 months is plenty of time to do them. If you do one a week, it usually gets the job done.
As I live in a hot part of California and the chimneys are not as plentiful (even the ones here are regulated to burn days and non burn days. and it seems there are more nons and fines if not adhered to). So I will probably go the Google Street Maps route and find mine that way. Otherwise most of the ones I would have to do are just a few bricks on top of a roof and verrrry boring.

There are also chimneys in caves (natural) and in volcanoes - if you really want to get technical.
Scattykat
09-03-2010, 03:54 PM
oh yeah, wonderful, and on old traction engines too. dh reminded me that in the uk a chimney is slang fer a black eye???
...can anyone think of any others? :D
I read a definition that said a pizza oven is a chimney. The oven is open, air comes in the lower part and the upper part is the chimney where the hot comes out.
Forgive me as a newbie, but I am not sure I understand the project....there is 24 people doing this ultimately and if we sign up we send each a chimney painting? I think that is what I've figured out from reading everyone's post, and the project link doesn't explain it any further. Is this a common project type?
Thanks for enlightening the ignorant :o

Hi KatV, yep you got it right. :)
Hopefully if we get a full project it will mean each participant will be painting 24 chimneys, but they are tiny, atc size (2.5 x 3.5 inch) or if you prefer standard postcard size.
You can do it in any painting/drawing medium you like. If you set yourself the target to do one a week it's easy, and once you get into it, you'll get carried along in the fun. Then you send one card to each person on the list....that's the list of the participants addresses that I will send you once the project closes, at the begining of October probably, so if you sign up, don't forget to pm me your address.
AND of course the really fun bit, each person on the list sends you a mini original painting too, so you end up with a wonderful collection of mini art from all around the world. I now have two albums of wonderful varied artworks  , which I so enjoy looking through, as do my friends and visitors.
Hope that makes it clearer?
Soo what d'ya think?
Chow fer now...

Hi Suz and welcome to the project, like Jen and KatV, Suz is new to the project game, but I know there be lots of friendly peeps here to help along the way.
5 signed up now, I getting quite excited again, yarhoo
Not getting too many for this trade. I guess everyone is afraid of chimneys.

I know I was nervous (still am a little) so maybe all of you who have done it before could add some pointers to help those that are unsure. As you have pointed out it is not just limited to conventional chimneys. There are all sorts of variations which really makes this more exciting so maybe we should include those points in the entry form. Just and idea. Jen
Don't worry Jen. I have 30+ trades under my belt. They are fun. You meet lots of nice people and by the time you do a few, you will feel like you have known everyone all your life. I have met a lot of friends thru Wetcanvas who are "keepers". We all had to start with a first trade.
Just cut your cards (or you can buy them. Use something pretty sturdy like at least cardstock thick.
A lot of us mail them out as we get them finished. I usually start with the name that is on the list after mine and send out until I come back to my own name. That way everyone doesn't send to the first person on the list and the last people on the list have to wait months to receive.
I enclose mine in a little plastic badge holder but others use zip bags, or small greeting cards to enclose theirs.
I sign the front, write the following on the back. Name if any of the picture, I sign my name and also put my screen name "J", put the date, medium and the name of the trade.
Make sure you scan or photo the cards you send out as you will be the one to post them to the final images area. When you do a card and mail it, you pm the person so they will know it is on the way. Then when they receive it, they will pm you back. At that time, you post the photo or scan of the artwork so that everyone can brag about them. We wait to post so that the receiver will be surprised and not see their card before they open it.
Don't be afraid to ask any questions you have. Everyone here is really friendly and glad to help.

Hi Pam, good to have you on board. I guess I'm biased on chimneys, I've loved there quirkiness ever since I was a kid. Hope we get a few more sign up soon.
Thanks Jeanne, you're so good at explaining things in an easyily understood way, I think I sometimes get meself in a twist with words, or as me dear mumma used to say, I gets me murds wuddled!
Stiil a few weeks for signing up peeps...

When do w begin doing the actual paintings?

:) You can start doing the cards whenever you want. We just can't mail them until we get the address list. That usually happens when we have a full project.

I've received a few in pastel so I know it can be done. But I don't know if they were using the pastel pencils or the others. I don't do pastels myself. Can't handle the scratchy sound or the dust.

I have received pastels in trades - the only problem I've found is that you need to be a bit heavy handed with the fixative or they don't handle the mail well. I have received a couple that arrived as smears of dust.
Turpintine45
09-06-2010, 05:26 PM
Yes well I can see how that would happen but now I've tried the Spetrafix fixative I feel a lot better giving my pastels a good spraying with it. Maybe I will try mailing a couple to myself and see how they hold up. I know they can be tossed around a lot with overseas mailing. Perhaps I should brush up on my acrylics! Thanks for all the positive help. Jen

Hi Lily, so glad you joined us. I too will be late starting my chimneys as I am going to uk for a fortnight, and the scenery up north deserves my full attention. I have already made a start collecting my refs, and have some lovely french follys and fancies. Even my dh is getting in the swing and stopping the car for me to 'snap' any unusual chimneys we see while out and about.

got me chimney refs packed ready to go to uk, so may get the chance to get started on them there as my babe will have to work some shifts, poor love. Still it will be lovely to see and HUG her. Mind you I have to say UK has many more interesting chimneys than here in France, so may just have to snag a few anglosaxon smoking pipes...
...and by the way, still plenty a room fer a few more of yee projecteers.....

hey Stacey (firehorse) I see you're on board for this project too, tho gotta say I'm not sure you fully understand the exchange projects system completely. The idea is to send everyone on the list an original mini pic in exchange fer one of their original minipics. I only say this as I notice that for the last 10 projects you've signed up fer you've not sent anyone anything. You do some cool art, so this time we're really looking forward to seeing some of those Australian chimneys...
hello :)
I'm not getting in on this project---just can't make the commitment right now...but saw the thread, read thru it, and am intrigued by the subject matter
that being said, I have a couple ideas for you all, and if they are too far off from what you wanted, please say so...
Chimney Rock---which a National Historic Site located in Nebraska, USA
(I actually have a picture of this that I took....not sure where that picture is at the moment though)
and Chimney Sweeps--you know, the guys that clean 'em out
putting a stretch on the subject, but fun :)

Iam looking forward to this exchange as there are so many chimneys in the UK and Europe to paint. I hope to be able to photograph some really unusual ones for reference while here in the UK. I am travelling back to Spain next week so may pick up a French one or two on the way. Industrial chimneys are often very intersting as well. Eileen

09-23-2010, 10:56 AM
Eileen, not sure if I said Hi and welcome, but I have now.
I agree those industrial chimneys can be pretty awsome subjects.
It looks as if theres going to be quite a small number for this project, so my problem might be to decide which of my refs to drop. Who knows, we might get a sudden rush of late comers, hope so.
Don't forget those addresses :D

The last project I was in was slow to fill up as people wanted to finish other projects before committing, but it did fill up at the end so hang on in there!!! I am looking forward to doing this even if it is fewer in number. There are so many types of chimneys the choice is endless. Even animals, ie. ants make chimneys!! So come on folks have a go!!! Just a thought....when posting out our cards, start with the faithful and then hopefully a newby's card will arrive, and you can post to them. Does this sound harsh? Well, if someone posts out in good faith they should receive in good faith. I would be upset if someone just collected mine. You soon learn who to trust. We can have problems and as long as we keep in touch.... like me lingering here in England because my other half has come down with a very bad cold and chest infection, while I languish here dying to see all the cards waiting for me in Spain...:( Can't wait to get home. So please bear with this delinquent!!! Eileen

Yeah, postal costs.. and most of my cards are overseas, so I do take into account how many. The pet one is breaking my piggy banks back, but I so enjoy doing this. So, I must try not to do too many at once, says she signing up for chimneys, but I saw the ones in Albury years ago and fell in love with them, so just HAVE to share them. Eileen

Well I am a late joiner but just finished all of my obligations on the other projects and am feeling like I need another, even though I said I would not join another without the project system being back to normal. I miss the titles and comments.
But that said my first project was Windows with Scatty and crew and I was not a real full fledged member of that one so thought this project would compliment it so well. Since it was put up I have been driving around looking at chimneys and find myself drawn to this project so here I am.
Hey, to all I have been on projects with before and hello to those who I have not met yet. Looking forward to this project and now that I am behind I must get out and find lots and lots of cool chimneys. More fun to be had!!

I clicked on the join expecting to get "sorry this project is closed for new participants" but it said "you're in" so I was happy at that. I wanted to finish up my other two projects before committing to another and now that I am I went looking for something interesting and here is where I ended up. Thanks.

Jen there are a few ways to do it. If you go to the projects page here (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php) you can click on the image you want to comment on and then click on comment on the resulting page and leave everything in the window that opens except the part under the picture that says delete..... Just replace that sentence with whatever you want to say about the image.
Another way is to go to the main project page (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=1341). Click on the finished works gallery link and then choose the participant you want to comment on. The resulting page there will be a list of all of their submissions and the comment link will allow you to comment as before.
There is a way to do multiples at one time but we will save that for another post. This will get you comfortable with the project system. Hope I explained it in an understandable way.

Scatty-It seems to be leaving he HTML code in the messages. It seems to happen with cut and paste from another program, perhaps it does not like the font or some such thing. This forum has a very limited font library so it might be as simple as that.

You can still see the adresses with the gobbledeegoop But it would be easier to decifer some of the world wide adresses without it. Judy could be right about the font being the problem. Anyway right now just relax Kat we can work it out No worries. Jen

seems my scattiness knows no bounds....this is actually ( I think) the one I sent to Jen, she didn't get the chateau and now I'm not sure either, think it is perhaps heading Jenny's way, we'll see. This little mini pic actually has an underpainting done in red wine, I started it at my daughters in uk, and thanks to the king of ryanair I was paintless, so experimented with some red wine. It actually made a pretty neat monochromic rep, but t'is now overpainted with w & n watercolours. Just wonder if you can still sniff the wine on the painting...:D

this classic tall french chimney has arrived chez Pam. It's on a friends house not far from me. I told Pam about another friends episode with his tall chimney. They had a problem with the top of it, smoke coming back all the time. They tried to fix it with a smoke cowl, and put a ladder against it, climbed up and then friend, the ladder and the chimney all toppled and fell through the roof. He was very very lucky and walked away with barely a bruise, but not so lucky on the insurance claim, they wouldn't pay :crying: . The final job turned out far more exspensive than a smoke cowl....576731

This is a black smoker chimney on the East Pacific Rise for Lonelm. Hot underground fluids come out of the chimney into the cold ocean floor sea water. On contact with the sea water they create the "black smoke" which consists of minute dark suspended mineral crystals.
I studied geology, and worked in that field for a decade. My passion for the subject will always be with me ;)

This ones finally arrived chez Lily. This quirky chimney is on top of a grand bourgois house in a village near to us, the jacks were 'jack jacking' to each other loudly and stuffing little twigs in under those wigwam slates with fervour, and I bet clogging up that lovely smoke stack and making the house occupants mither a little when they need the chimney swept more frequently than normal...

What's funny is that's it's right by a lovely bakery so you never know which scent you'll get, when! Jen you are right they are posted to the gallery but are not always easy to see on the main projects page if there are a number being added on the same day. Sometimes they are quick to be pushed from that main project page but they can be seen in the gallery. There are just a fairly large number of projects ongoing right now. I generally put mine up and then comment on my own so I can share a bit about where the picture/idea came from since titles and comments are still broken. We did that on another project I was on and it worked well.
I know Suz was having computer problems so not sure if she can even post to the gallery.

This lovely chimney is mine, all mine. Jeanne, where was this? Well done, thank you so much, I love it.
I got pieces off of more than one photo. Probably off the internet. I always change them up so that they aren't recognizable. The one I got the pipes from had all straight ones. I decided to do one with a different top to change it up. I think the chimney was originally white brick. I wanted concrete. And I'm sure I changed the roof and the front of the house. It was probably wood.
turpentine45 I got my wonderful chimney and it's beautiful. No smears from the mail. Thank you.

These little guys are turning up everywhere. I love the detail in the chimney and such a pretty moonlit sky. Beautifully done.

Thanks everyone! I had such fun finding then painting all the chimneys then I just had to add some more fun with the elves. All of the chimneys except one are from my UK trip. I mosied round the country stopping at relatives and friends then a quick run to Lands End (because I had never been) and making my poor husband come to screeching stops or turn around to catch a chimney on the way. I am so impressed with the standard here and so small too. I wasn't sure I could come up with so many origional paintings but am still scanning roof tops and could go on for a long time but for everyone's safety it is probably good I had to stop at thirteen!!!:wink2: Thanks Kat for starting this. Jen these things get so addictive. My first one was a windows exchange and I still find myself seeing interesting windows and thinking how they would make a neat little painting. I find these mini challenges get me looking at things differently because they get me thinking differently about art. I love the hunt for just the right subject, the process of making, sending and receiving. It is certainly a great experience and I have "met" so many new art friends that inspire me daily. Your paintings show you are getting bitten by the bug as well.

Judy you are so right and I guess just looking for ideas improves ones observing skills and rubs off into all aspects of your art. I never expected to get so much from painting small paintings. Adictive is the right word! Jen

Yes it does improve so much in the world of art for the participant. I just think they are so much fun and now that I am without again I keep thinking it is time to join another but then again thinking I have so much to do to get ready for the holiday season. Makes for an interesting dilemma for sure.

This little beauty is all mine. So pretty and much more vibrant IRL. Love the little guy decorating the front. Just a marvelous scene with so much happening you could look and look and still find something new. I am amazed the pastel pencil travelled so well. Speaks to how well it was wrapped. It is truly a gorgeous painting.

Thanks Judy. This was taken as we drove into Winchcombe Gloustershire just before sunset. This house stood out with the sky changing behind it and the sun still on front. My remaining cousins and 102 year old Aunt live here and it is a beautiful area.
I sprayed all the paintings a couple of time with Spectrafix fixative. It doesn't alter the colour like so many sprays do. I'm glad that so far they have made it okay. Jen

This is a very interesting chimney. As always there is the little elf giving it a Christmas theme. Very nice painting.

This chimney is in a small french town near us, where we often go shopping. I really like these terracotta tile biult chimneys, they are so colourful and quirky. I added the swallows to give it a summery feel...:)
