This is a green heron done on Canson Sketch 9 x12 with pencils Hb and 2B

Animal..no negative comment to make here, except that you might want to put a piece of paper under you hand when drawing to prevent some of the smearing these softer leads cause.

Oils from the skin of the hand grabs pigment and causes this smearing.

What I'd like to see you try, is an experiment or assignment if you will. You no doubt are familiar with my sketching how-to here on WC...and that hiking boot I did.

I'd like to see you try this same bird with a black ink ball point pen, preferably a BIC medium point. Then go over it with very light washes of watercolor. There are some dynamics in handling the pen...shading, and color I would imagine would suit you and help you in the long run toward wildlife art.
