I posted this in the Critiques forum, since there's more traffic there, but this is where it "belongs" http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif First time using colored pencils, second attempt at color period. Comments? Suggestions?

WOW! First time at Coloured pencils. This is really good. How did you achieve those eyes? What was this done on?

Thanks, Animal. I did this on 11x14 medium tooth drawing paper (Canson). The eyes? I just started with the black of the pupil, then a ring of brown lines extending out of the pupil, and another ring in a lighter brown. Then a fine ring of dark brown again around the edge for some depth. Is that what you wanted to know? (Never tried explaining before http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif )

Lovely picture. I particularly like the 'texture' that you have managed to get on his skin/fur/coat, very velvety.
Just one thing that looks a little 'off' to me is the paw/leg on the right (jaguars left) it looks a little too thin.
Great work, look forward to seeing more.

Karen, I know what you mean about the leg. I thought the same thing, but that's how the reference pic is, much of the inside is in deep shadow. But it does bother me, and I'm thinking I should've handled it differently.

You're a natural Colleen! Both at wildlife and colored pencils.
One suggestion is to soften or blur your edges such as around the cat's cheek, which will take away the pasted or decal look. It will help the roundness appear as though it goes back into space thereby strengthening the illustion of atmospheric perspective.

You did a nice job on the Jaguar. I like the colour of his fur. He is very handsome! I also like the subtle green you chose for the background. I hope you will post some more coloured pencil work in the future.

I must say that this is a great picture. How long did it take you to draw it? I know when i draw something it is rushed. This looks like you thought it out first.Great Job.

Cienhope - Thanks! Let's see, I started it on a Friday night, finished it Saturday afternoon, maybe 8-9 hours altogether? Not counting the time it took to stop, go to the art supply store, and get a bigger box of pencils. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif Hardest part was the color, figuring out how to work with the colored pencils, which I'd never done before. I don't care for the flatness of it, but I'll get it right next time...
