2 questions on sketching and ink....

hi all
i am finally ready to start my underseascape oil paintring after a slight delay
and i have a question. after i sketch in my scene with a 2hb mechanical pencil can i just go over it with the first layer of background paint and medium (1part linseed oil/4 parts oderless turp) or should i go over my entire sketch with ink and then do the first layer of background paint. and what kind of ink and pen do i use . any help would be appreciated.

thanks for that great link. man can that guy paint. in the past i always just sketched out the drawing on canvas and painted. never did an under wash or layers. never used medium either. but that was back in 1982 when there was no web or this website. now after reading the info on this website and seeing the results of the artists here i am very psyched about doing paintings in layers and hopefully i will achieve that luminosity on my paintings.
