Dwarf Lake Iris is an endangered species. Most of the world's population of these small plants resides in the state of Michigan. The common American Toad is shown as well.

this is terrific. Looks abit like a cain toad. they are not too popular out here LOL unless they are resined with a bear can in there hand as a ornament. LOL

Very, very realistic leaves on all of the plants and the under brush. Also the frog is very realisitic...well, I imagine it all is! :D :) Nicely done!

I'm glad people like the painting.
I wanted to paint the toad and iris for a while.
Initially I was planning two paintings, but I thought they would work well together and live in the same area. THe photo reference I sketched from were taken about 150meters apart.

When composing I chose a vertical format to add some energy and used the stems and blossoms of the iris to kind of "explode out" from the toad.

jbrules: You are right that it looks like a Cain Toad from Australia... The American Toad and Cain toad are in the same genus (Bufo americanus and Bufo marinus) Fortunately these guys belong here in Michigan. They are also about 1/4 the size of the Cain toads.

Hi Matt,

You even manage to make an unattractive creature like the toad look lovely with your artistic skill.

The little dwarf Iris is great, "exploding out" from behind the toad like it is.

Very nice ground and grasses too. I like your style a lot.
