Happy October. I'm miserable. Anyone else have allergies? I hate that I'm the most miserable at my favorite time of year. I think I need to move too because Kansas City seems to be THE worst for allergies. I never had a problem until I moved here.

And now for our $20 million dollar Fantasy/Sci Fi question...

What is your favorite fantasy or mythological creature and why?

OMG! I LOVE David Bowie. I've had a crush on him since 6th grade! :D I remember I dressed up like him from his video for "Blue Jean" for Halloween in 8th grade. Oh, and the Changes concert was one of the best concerts I ever went to. When was that? 1990?

You remind me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power. What power? The power of voodoo. Who do? You do...remind me of the babe.

TeAnne, which " Major Tom" song? There's "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes". They're both great and "haunting". My favorite hanting song of his has to be "The Man who sold the World".

I don't have a favorite fantasy or mythological creature. I am making a concerted effort to accept it all as reality. Sort of method acting for fantasy illustration. :D

My favorite?

DRAGONS!!!!!!!

Like you hadn't guessed already. :)

I prowly would have said the unicorn when I was about 5 :o Now it's dragons all the way *g* but anyone who's seen a lot of my work from over the years probably would know that already lol. Why? I think it stems from my interest in dinosaurs growing up and I've just always loved those large, reptilian creatures. They're so powerful, graceful, majestic, beautiful, deadly, gental, wize, cunning and brilliant in my mind, and that's atleast how I try to represent them in my images :cat: meow

For me... it used to be dragons about 6 or so years ago, but I'm not sure what happened. Maybe it was reading so many fantasy novels that just didn't have dragons in them?? :confused: I still love dragons, and I'm sure one of them will sneak into my portfolio, but by far my favorite subject matter would have to be angels and demons; that light side vs dark side always gets me... :) Also, tormented angels, but whew, I could get into a huge nonsensical rant, so ill just leave it at that ;) Any subjects where there is an internal light vs dark conflict, or some tormented soul, or the beauty of just everything, all that stuff is great for me.

I'm partial to Elves myself. I have some living in the woods here. They tend to keep to themselves, but come out occasionally for a small bon fire and some elven music. Fun stuff!

I do worry about them come winter time though, they are scantely dressed! Oh well.

:D

Try living in Louisiana with allergies. Some mornings my eyelids are so puffy they won't open all the way and my son actually gets a rash on his eyelids.!

Favorite creature? I can't pick just one, but I love dragons and centaurs are pretty cool too. And griffins!

There's no way that I can choose just one either.
My favorites creatures are dragons and griffins. I'm quite fond of Pegasus also. Winged cats are fun. I also like ents.
And I've always been fascinated with mermaids.

Flying monkeys are a definite turn-off. They give me the creeps. Especially those stupid little hats and vests. {{shiver}}

I really like elves and fairies also. They can vary so much in appearance from artist to artist. I find the variety fascinating.

Told you I couldn't pick just one. ;)

I did this in 2000. There was a competition running on the David Bowie website. He posted his selfportrait and artist's were to manipulate and or whatever with it, as long as his image was used. He was then going to pic the ones he liked then narrow it down to one. The winner received a prize, an original David Bowie Artwork. (Wow, I really wanted that) Anyway, this is what I came up with, It covers his love for cats and a movie he made downunder.(Just can't think of it's name right now, but it was about WW1 or 2)
Of course I didn't win, all the winning ones were very,very abstract.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/image_viewer.php?entry_id=14678

dragons, good!
unicorns, good!

i'm partial to elves, when it comes to the
standard
run -- of -- the -- mill
critters of fantasy.

i personally subscribe to the thought
that there is a need for more and more
fantasy creatures that can't be picked
out of a cliche compendium.

china mieville (whom i've dribbled about on another thread) is an excellent author who writes
* entirely new and
* wicked cool critters.

all his creations are dear to my heart, even the most repulsive...
but the khepri - a race of scarab or scarab-headed creatures wherein the females are the most sought-after of artisans - are more than likely my favorites.
they're named after an egyptian god with the same head/critter, and the artists (sculptors) are remarkably and believably caught up in the beauty of their art.

a fantasy creature that is an artist (with a bug-head, to boot) is just too cool to ignore.

Actually there are three "Major Tom" songs. Space Oddity by David Bowie. Major Tom Coming Home by Peter Schilling. I've never heard of Ashes to Ashes so I take your word on it.

When I was a kid I was nuts about Unicorns but I got tired of them when they became commercialized, though I still have one or three around. I went through a griffin phase for awhile especially after Mercedes Lackey's Black Griffin trilogy. I used to be partial to the nightmares from Peirs Anthony's Nightmare, Nightmare book. Now I think I am attracted to any and all fantasy/mythological creatures; though elves, dryads, faeries, and dragons seem to lead the pack.

"ashes to ashes funk to funky
we know major tom's a junky
strung out on heaven's high
hitting an all time low"

Space Oddity is typically considered to be the "Major Tom song" though. :D

As to mythological creatures, I was trying to avoid answering because then I'd have to pick! But, since Tracy caught me in my avoidance...:(

When it comes to drawing them, it's elves or fairies.
When it comes to collecting, it's silly dragon figurines.
When it comes to movies, it's definitely Gelflings and Skeksis.

And, if you force me to pick the ones that fascinate me the most, I have to go with vampires or Lamia. Although the Medusa is pretty great too. :)

Ick! That one doesn't count. It's an aberration! :p He did "Ashes to Ashes" when he was hanging out in Berlin with Iggy Pop and doing lots of drugs. His record label wanted a sequal to "Space Oddity", and that's what he delivered. There's a really cool video for it. Apparently Major Tom spins off into space, locates an emergency supply of smack and has himself a party.
