View Full Version : Sketches from South America
07-12-2010, 02:15 PM
Here is the start of a series of sketches based on photos from South America. 5x7" watercolour and ink.
This is a giant soccer stadium in Rio. I think this might be the main stadium for the next World Cup match in 2014?
07-12-2010, 02:39 PM
Neat sketches of the stadium. Cool if you are correct about the next World Cup.
07-12-2010, 02:43 PM
Wow Ep these are great. Very strong and colorful, love them! Looking forward to seeing more from South America.
07-12-2010, 03:04 PM
Good sketches of the stadium. Looking forward to more!
07-12-2010, 10:48 PM
Great start, this should be an interesting themed sketchbook! I love your clean clear washes of colour, very eyecatching.
07-13-2010, 12:18 AM
Debby, Viv, Robert, and Jackie - thank you :)
07-13-2010, 11:35 AM
Great sketches EP! I love how you simplify and encapsulate so much visual info into a small number of brush and pen strokes. Very nice work.
07-14-2010, 02:21 PM
Jean, thank you.
These are two buildings/structures in Rio. 5x7" wc and ink.
07-14-2010, 03:07 PM
Hi Ep - intersting building on the left. It looks like a sculpture of some sort?
07-14-2010, 03:34 PM
Thanks. I think it's a piece of public art? I can't find info on it online. I must not be using the correct search terms. Here is a small photo of the structure.
07-14-2010, 05:13 PM
Amazing structures. Like how you handled the one you showed a photo of. Did you go up those stairs and look around?
07-14-2010, 08:58 PM
Interesting structures. I see that you are from California. You must have travelled a ways to get to South America. Nice to have a sketchbook to remember it by.
07-15-2010, 01:05 AM
Debby and Michelle - thank you. I did not travel to South America. I'm working off photos from a family member. I'm compiling some sketches to give as a gift :)
07-15-2010, 01:29 AM
great work as always EP!
07-19-2010, 09:57 AM
Jackie - thanks.
Two more. 5x7" watercolour and ink.
07-19-2010, 03:29 PM
Lovely bright sketches Ep!
07-19-2010, 04:54 PM
Fun sketches. Very good.
07-19-2010, 08:20 PM
You have developed a "style" with your drawings that have a sense of fun and I really like the watercolour washes that you use - very clean, pure colour.
07-24-2010, 03:42 PM
Viv, Debby, and Jackie - thank you.
Two more. 5x7" wc and ink on wc paper.
07-24-2010, 05:53 PM
The market stands are so colorful. Great seeing this through your eyes.
07-24-2010, 09:44 PM
The market scenes are colorful and lively. I love the stacked boxes of fruits.
07-24-2010, 11:45 PM
These are very nice, colorful sketches! I like the one of the tower with rings and also, the fruit stands. 'Makes me want to always sketch in color now. :)
07-28-2010, 12:30 PM
Debby, Robert, and Deb - thank you
Two more from South America. This is the statue of Christ the Redeemer on the hill in Rio, Brazil. Watercolour and ink, 5x7" wc paper.
07-28-2010, 12:59 PM
The statue is great. Are you using pencil or pen for the line work?
07-28-2010, 01:50 PM
Debby - thank you. It's pencil first then pen overtop.
07-28-2010, 03:11 PM
The colorfull fruit stand is terrific and I like the sketch with the woman looking at the fruit. Great statue - he's keeping an eye on someone!
08-02-2010, 01:33 PM
Two more. Three girls posing for a photo at the base of the statue of Christ the Redeemer. And a sign for taking the tram to Corcovado. 5x7", ink and wc
08-02-2010, 05:59 PM
Very nice. I like the clean colors you use.
08-03-2010, 04:10 PM
These last two are colorful and lively. I like the way you composed the sign - that's very dramatic and effective as a composition.
08-04-2010, 10:38 PM
continuing with some great stuff EP!
08-05-2010, 07:27 PM
Debby, Robert, and Virgo - thank you.
Two more. This is the beach in Rio (Cococobana?) with the hanggliders. 5x7", ink and watercolour.
08-05-2010, 07:36 PM
Sketchbook Project - a project that invites sketchbook artists to choose from themes and fill a 5x7 sketchbook..and send that sketchbook on the tour around the US.. FYI.. looks fun!!
08-05-2010, 09:32 PM
EP, great stuff, you have got the colours perfect - again!
08-05-2010, 09:51 PM
These two are a couple of your best. I love the beach scene with the paraglider especially, the scale and perspective are elegant.
08-06-2010, 01:48 PM
These are great. The detail on the first one is spectacular.
08-11-2010, 10:05 PM
bigfoot, Jackie, Robert, and Debby - thank you
Two more. 5x7" watercolour and ink. The first is from a beach (Cococabana?) and the second is an ice delivery truck. Apparently it's very popular :)
08-12-2010, 01:00 AM
Ep, these are glorious! I love the strong colors and fun combinations. Beautiful penwork, I can still see constant improvement in your pen drawing.
It makes sense that ice cream is tremendously popular in a hot climate! It was in New Orleans.
Nice work on the last entry sketches - which unfortunately is all I can see because the rest of the images are missing. I'll keep checking back. :)
08-12-2010, 07:18 PM
I love the gelotimo truck. :-)
08-12-2010, 07:50 PM
Great pictures. The truck is wonderful.
08-16-2010, 11:05 AM
Robert, John, Michelle, and Debby - thank you.
08-16-2010, 02:13 PM
That architecture is grand. Is it an aquaduct?
08-16-2010, 02:58 PM
I suspect so. I didn't take the photo and don't have access to the photographer at present to ask :) This might be the place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carioca_Aqueduct
08-16-2010, 03:13 PM
Ep; Your watercolor sketches are terrific! Full of such color and life. I love looking at them - they're "happy" sketches!
08-16-2010, 07:48 PM
Ep these continue to be great little sketches, the ice truck is such fun and your washes are vibrant and clean every time, look forward to seeing your new posts each time!
08-17-2010, 02:40 PM
EP, the arches of the aqueduct - is that what it is? They're gorgeous. Great perspective on them and vibrant, intense color that suggests South America in a very direct way. I also love the first one, which almost looks abstract but might be a red flower in front of something interesting. What is that background?
08-18-2010, 04:25 PM
Viv, Jackie, and Robert - thank you.
I'm pretty sure it's an aquaduct. The flower seems to be a banana blossom?
Two more. Rio, and a waterfall in Brazil. Again 5x7" ink and watercolour.
08-18-2010, 09:09 PM
both lovely as usual EP but I do particularly like the first sketch, the flowers and leaves are gorgeous ;)
08-18-2010, 10:08 PM
These last two are spectacular! I love the flowers, that whole scene has such great balance. The waterfall is beautiful and it looks like the trees around it are flowering with the colors you've used. Both of them brim over with color and light, as if the world's more colorful down there (which it is if it's close to the equator).
08-24-2010, 02:47 AM
The last two are very gorgeous. Unfortunately though, they're the only ones I can see in this thread. :'(
08-24-2010, 03:38 PM
These are wonderful paintings. The waterfall has such movement to it.
Terrific color and life in these, EP.
08-29-2010, 10:21 PM
Jackie, Robert, Crystal, Debby, and Herb - thank you.
Crystal - I've alerted the moderator about missing images. I'm sure they've got a LOT of things to address first.
Two more. 5x7" ink and watercolours.
Wonderful and wonderfully colorful sketches!
08-30-2010, 03:16 AM
Like the landscape painting. But, pardon me for being in the dark, what is the second painting of, please? Is it part of a boat?
08-30-2010, 03:28 AM
Your paintings are so full of color and life. Love the flowers in Rio.
08-30-2010, 09:49 AM
John, Debby, and Viv - thank you.
That second painting contains the cable car and cable car station for sugar loaf mountain in Rio.
08-30-2010, 12:54 PM
Oh! That's what it is - I thought it looked like a cockpit of some kind. As soon as you mentioned it, everything fell into place. I used to ride cable cars in New Orleans and San Francisco - that's such a great view. They're a cool form of transportation. Gorgeous landscape too, so vast and inviting!
08-30-2010, 08:05 PM
Oh, now I see it. Thank you.
08-30-2010, 10:17 PM
Robert and Debby - thank you.
Two more from South America. Views from cable car of the (simplified) city expanse of Rio. Ink and watercolour, 5x7"
08-31-2010, 03:06 AM
Wow! Those views of Rio are spectacular. What is that waterway that looks so evenly geometric? It's like a swimming pool but it's also the size of a lake with boats and docks in it, that's so incredible. Is it artificial or did they just shape the sides of a lake or natural bay?
08-31-2010, 11:12 AM
Guanabara Bay - from the photos it looks partly man-made and partly some artistic licence?
one view: http://www.7wonders.org/community/photo/brazil/harbour-of-rio-de-janeiro/39/139/
another view: http://www.7wonders.org/images/america/brazil/harbour-rio-janeiro/harbour-rio-janeiro.jpg
By the way in researching this I found the name of the football stadium from my earliest sketches: it's either The Maracana Stadium or The João Havelange Stadium.
08-31-2010, 01:31 PM
Oh wow! It looks like the angle you got it from was just toward the squared-off bit - it's beautiful! What a gorgeous bay. Thank you so much for the photos.
08-31-2010, 07:29 PM
Go away for a few days and look what I miss! Great work EP, all the new stuff is fabulous - I too thought I was looking at a boat but once you mentioned what it is I can see that also - how bizarre!
08-31-2010, 07:33 PM
Great aerial views.
08-31-2010, 10:20 PM
Robert, Jackie, and Debby - thank you :)
Two more. The old way to get up the mountain, and the new way. Again, 5x7" ink and watercolours.
09-01-2010, 10:16 PM
Interesting contrast between the old and the new. Nicely done.
09-02-2010, 08:28 PM
Beautiful streetcar and gondola! Both of them are painted so well with such great perspective, they're wonderful. I love seeing them together, it's a cool contrast of styles.
09-03-2010, 10:06 PM
09-06-2010, 12:10 PM
Debby, Robert, and Jackie - thank you :)
A monkey seen from the ride up Sugar Loaf mountain.
And the concession/washroom/ticket counter for the ride.
Ink and watercolour, 5x7"
09-06-2010, 10:08 PM
Well done. Do you know what species of monkey that is?
09-07-2010, 01:12 AM
Debby - thank you. Another item to research! I think it might be this:
"This little furry creature is the Sagui, the second smallest monkey in Brazil."
from a blog (http://louisianameetsbrazil.blogspot.com/2010/06/sugarloaf-mountain-pao-de-acucar.html)
Here are some Google images search results (http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=Sagui&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=6MiFTKTTNYv0tgPm6uj2Bw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CB4QsAQwAA&biw=1920&bih=1085)
and here is a Wikipedia article (http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagui) (use google translate for the English version)
09-07-2010, 09:09 PM
Very cool. Thanks. That's some wild fur.
09-15-2010, 10:34 AM
Debby - thank you.
Two more. Cable car, and view of the beaches in Rio. Ink and watercolour, 5x7".
09-15-2010, 08:16 PM
....more great stuff EP!
09-15-2010, 10:58 PM
09-21-2010, 10:24 AM
Debbie and Jackie - thank you.
Two more. Ink and watercolour, 5x7". These are views of Rio or Sao Paulo, Brazil.
09-21-2010, 10:29 AM
Love these! I have friends from there. Love all the colors!
09-21-2010, 08:11 PM
I love the strong primary colors. Very interesting :-) I've been studying a bit of color theory and enjoy studying art using just the 3 primary colors and green. Limited palettes are fascinating to me.
09-21-2010, 08:16 PM
More beautiful paintings.
09-27-2010, 11:54 PM
Sorry I missed this journal EP - although half of the images are missing, what I do see is simply stunning.
I LOVE your style, so clean and elogant, no unnecesary details and nothing more than the information to let the viewer to get involved and "see" the details for themselves. This is not an easy thing to achieve, and you do it so beautifully and naturally.
I just LOVE ALL OF YOUR WORK!!!!!
09-28-2010, 12:14 AM
EP, these are elegant. I love that first one, the city across the bay. It's so clean and bright and powerful. The second is lovely too. That color harmony still echoes South American textiles and paintings I've seen, making them even richer.
09-28-2010, 11:26 AM
Rachel, Bootz, Debby, Stacey, and Robert - thank you
Two more. These are from statues in Sao Paulo's "Parque da Independência" - Independence Park.
"... it was complemented by panels and bronze figures representing the Pernambuco Revolution of 1817, the Minas Gerais Conspiracy, Independence Patriarch José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva and other relevant heroes."
Again, 5x7", ink and watercolour.
09-28-2010, 03:08 PM
EP - These are so great in your colorful style!!! I especially like the views you did of the city from the cable cars. Is it me or do you expect to hear screeching when you look at that monkey? lol Wonderful sketches.
09-28-2010, 04:37 PM
EP, both of the statues came out so well. I love the verdegris ram's heads and the horses charging forward - you captured that sense of statuary so well and the perspective is great. Beautiful paintings.
09-28-2010, 04:40 PM
Love them, but REALLY Love those horse statues! Very cool!
09-28-2010, 07:15 PM
Great job on the statues.
10-06-2010, 01:13 AM
Joan, Robert, Rachel, and Debby - thank you
Two more from Sao Paulo's "Parque da Independência" - Independence Park.
Ink and watercolour, 5x7"
10-06-2010, 01:14 AM
Excellent. The flag is so lively.
10-06-2010, 07:07 PM
Interesting colour choices EP, were they bronze statues that have the green patina after being outside?
10-06-2010, 08:54 PM
Thanks Debbie and Jackie. I'll need to look at the photos again but I believe they had a green oxidation layer on copper (bronze?)
11-07-2010, 06:45 PM
When I examined the photos again they were definitely green ... patina/oxidation layer I imagine.
Next set. Ink and watercolour, 5x7"
11-07-2010, 06:59 PM
Nice ones. Are these part of your page a day for November?
Somehow I let this one fall off my radar screen and haven't commented for some time. These are absolutely wonderful sketches from the trip - colorful, interesting and well executed. Really enjoyed looking through this again.
12-07-2010, 10:59 PM
Debby and John - thank you :)
12-07-2010, 11:03 PM
Next set. These were from photos taken from a tour bus.
Just a reminder note that I did not travel to South America. I'm working from photos taken by a family member. I plan to present the collection as an Xmas present.
12-08-2010, 01:42 AM
Like your illustrative style, I think they'll make a great Xmas present.
12-09-2010, 12:37 AM
This will be a fantastic Christmas gift. I really like the way you handled the sun and shadow on the building.
12-14-2010, 12:07 AM
Chuck and Debby - thank you.
These are from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and then from Argentina. 5x7", ink and watercolour.
12-14-2010, 07:50 PM
And more from Argentina:
12-14-2010, 08:01 PM
Just beautiful. I really like your basic colors and ink work.
12-19-2010, 01:59 PM
Great sketches and colour
Love those two ladies on the balcony.
12-19-2010, 02:51 PM
Debby and Elain - thank you.
Here are some from high atop some building in probably Argentina but it might be in Sao Paulo, Brazil (trip photos were slightly out of order I think)
12-19-2010, 03:45 PM
very nice sketches of Argentina, your color and washes look great...
Glad I jumped in again to catch up on these sketches. They are outstanding!
12-19-2010, 07:37 PM
Wonderful looking out from on high. Good perspective.
12-20-2010, 08:42 PM
Very nice, simple lines and colour, I like your trip.
12-26-2010, 03:39 PM
Chuck, John, Debby, and Chris - thank you.
12-26-2010, 03:41 PM
Next set. These are from Argentina (first two) and Montevideo, Uruguay (last two)
12-26-2010, 03:44 PM
Is this the end? You mentioned giving this as a Christmas gift and I was wondering if we weren't going to see anymore of these.
12-26-2010, 03:46 PM
Thanks. This is not the end. There are about 20 more to share here. I assembled the best of the sketches into a calendar, and the recipients were delighted with it :) :) :)
12-26-2010, 03:47 PM
That is very cool. Looking forward to seeing more of these.
12-26-2010, 05:45 PM
Gorgeous paintings! You've got such a great feel to all of them taken together, it's unique and your style is so strong. Great lines as always, beautiful color, and you're getting even better at the washes.
More wonderful pieces, EP! Nice job on the flag...well, actually, on all of them. :)
12-27-2010, 05:15 PM
More good stuff. Lucky folks getting the present.
12-30-2010, 08:04 PM
Just found these EP, wow! Thats some kind of a gift, wish you were a member of my family. An enjoyable stroll through your watercolors!
