I got a PM from Slasher today about Raw Umber. I thought I'd post the dialog and examples I came up with:
Since you make such great color comparisons and I've got a color-related question, I thought you were the right person to ask
So...which brand has the lowest chroma raw umber?
So far I've tried the old holland one, rembrandt (which is not the original one- it's pbk 11 and pr101), lefranc artist's and maimeri artisti.
Thank you in advance!
Vasari's is a color I consider "smokey" -- producing near-greys.
I'm doing a comparison right now of the Richeson/Shiva version, which is also nearly neutral, as is the Blue Ridge version.
The OH is very yellow in the traditional sense, as is WN and many other. So it seems we are dealing with two very different types of color choices in Raw Umber.
thank you Jim!
It's a pity I can't get Vasari paints here in Slovenia (except for an order over 500$).
That's exactly what I don't like about the Old Holland RU...
I should give a try to the Mussini, Michael Harding or Blockx versions...
Rihard
Blockx doesn't offer a RU, and Harding and Mussini will be the yellowish type like OH and WN.
I'm doing a comparison right now of colors in the range you might be interested in, and that are available more easily in Europe.
I hadn't realized Rihard was in Slovenia! So I concentrated on some paints that might be available to him there.
I don't know about VAT or import taxes, but Jackson's in the UK carries Vasari, so it might be possible to order a few tubes, and although expensive, it might not require a $500 minimum.

Left column:
Old Holland Raw Umber -- the traditional dark yellow
Maimeri Classico's new natural Brown Earth Florence -- less yellow than OH, moderate tinting strength
Zecchi Burnt Umber -- comes out quite neutral when white is added
Mussini Mineral Brown (PBr33) -- similar to "mars" colors turns toward red when white is mixed in
Richeson Raw Umber -- an example of the color I mentioned it the PM; quite neutral (not a perfect neutral!) when white is added
Blockx Transparent Mars Red -- beautiful color, but not what Rihard is looking for!
Right column:
L&B Van Dyke Brown (PBk9 Ivory Black, PR101) -- basically Mars Red + Ivory Black, maintaining a red hue with white added
Maimeri Puro Van Dyke Brown (PBr7, PBk9) -- much less yellow than the OH Raw Umber, near neutral
OH Van Dyke Brown/Cassel Earth (PR101, PBk9) -- a more neutral rendition than L&B's version, possibly using the Mars Brown version of PR101
OH Sepia (PY43, PBr7, PBk9) -- calcined natural ochre and earth plus black, like a dark Burnt Sienna
Vasari Raw Umber -- mentioned above as a suggestion, but not readily available in Eastern Europe; quite neutral with white, with slight green tinge, like the Richeson
Norma Raw Umber Brownish -- decidedly yellow
My first choice for a European painter, would be to check the Puro Van Dyke Brown for a more neutral color than the OH Raw Umber. Possibly also check the inexpensive new Natural Earth line from Classico, which should be easily available.
Otherwise, I stick by my earlier answer to the original question: Richeson's Shiva line, Blue Ridge and Vasari have the lowest chroma Raw Umbers that I am currently aware of.
Hope this helps narrow down the wide range of browns!
